John Jasper, Richmond's well-known colored preacher, repeated his celebrated lecture in Richmond Sunday evening before a large audience. The renowned "sun" orator preached from the book of Exodus: "The Lord is a Man of War; the Lord is His Name." In a very graphic manner the preacher carried his large and very attentive audience over the times when Israel was in Egypt, and across the Red Sea, the Wilderness, the Jordan, passed Jericho, and down to the wars of Joshua, and at this point proved to the satisfaction of a large class of his hearers that Joshua did command the "sun to stand still." The preacher referred to many passim him. J. S. Brewer interfered, wrestled the weapon from his hands and discharged the contents into the body and head of his brother Richard, from the effects of which he died in five hours. BRADFORD, Pa., March 23, 1881.—John McClelland, of Patton, Jefferson County, Pa., was a raftsman on the Allegheny River. On Monday he landed a raft at the mouth of Pine Creek. Just as he had fastened it by an inch rope to a snubbing post another raft came along and struck the end of the one on which McClelland was standing. The collision broke the snubbing post in two. The piece attached to the rope struck McClelland in the head, tearing it from his shoulders. The force of the blow hurled McClelland's body into the stream. The Presidential Vote. New York, March 31st.—The Times' special says: We announced several weeks since, that owing to unexpected discrepancies in the footing up of the popular vote for President, in various political almanacs, we were unable, even at this late day, to decide whether Garfield or Hancock had a plurality in the country. Relying upon the first almanacs received by us (and we are obliged to depend upon these text-books for political statistics), we had decided a few questions to the effect that Garfield had a small plurality; but a few days after the appearance of that issue we were staggered by a table from the Cincinnati Enquirer, showing a plurality for Hancock of 8106, and further doubt was cast upon our first authorities by the appearance of later almanacs, giving the Democratic candidates small majorities. In the meantime we were flooded with questions on this point. No two compilations could be found to agree, and hence we determined to address the several Secretaries of State ourselves and publish a correct table when the full returns were received. Lord is a Man of War; the Lord is His Name.” In a very graphic manner the preacher carried his large and very attentive audience over the times when Israel was in Egypt, and across the Red Sea, the Wilderness, the Jordan, passed Jericho, and down to the wars of Joshua, and at this point proved to the satisfaction of a large class of his hearers that Joshua did command the “sun to stand still.” The preacher referred to many passages alluding to the rising and going down of the sun. His logic about the distance of the sun from the earth was very fine, when, with contempt, he said some wise men, so called, stated the distance to be forty millions, others fifty millions, and one as much as one hundred and four millions of miles. “Whar could you get tape line long enough to measure such a distance? And how could a man get up close enough to the sun to hitch it on so as to measure? The railroads can’t get thar. The balloons come nearer than anything else; but who can go up? Now, it is so hot in August that folks want an umbrella, a fan, and plenty of ice water; and yet these wise men say we are 104,000,000 of miles from the sun. It is too foolish to believe such stuff.” And, turning around, he looked into the face of one of the most accomplished divines in Virginia and one of the best civil engineers in the country. Mr. Jasper treated all such figures as the work of a wicked, foolish mind, who was not satisfied with the plain Word of God, but must go outside to teach such things that no man can learn. To his mind the idea of the earth being round is so foolish that he would not insult his hearers with any argument on the subject. The scriptures say the earth has four corners—and that was proof to him that it is not round. “How could men be under their feet? How would they stick to the earth? Dey must be like flies, that can walk on the walls. I don’t believe any such stuff.” Mr. Jasper is a most earnest man. He fully believes all he says, and he wields a powerful sway over his people, who regard him as the most powerful preacher of their color. The soap and soda solution has given the best results in our hands, and we believe if persisted in it will entirely eradicate and exterminate the scale from the grove. Besides being an excellent insecticide, it benefits the tree in various ways: removes old bark, washes the leaves from the honey dew and smut, kills the bugs, and stimulates the tree into activity, and causes it to look green and healthy. The best general remedy for the scale is to keep your trees in vigorous health by thorough fertilization and cultivation. Stir the soil often with the cultivator or hoe; keep down the weeds and grass, and your grove will not require so many remedies to exterminate the insects.—Florida Sun and Press. P. PELLEGRIN, Practical Watchmaker and Jeweler Center Street, Anaheim, Cal. Sole Agent for the Celebrated it is not round. "How could men be under their feet? How would they stick to the earth? That the Mississippi may deservedly be called the "Father of Waters" the following data will show: Quantity of water discharged by that river annually, 14,883,360,636,880 cubic feet; quantity of sediment discharged annually, 28,188,083,892 cubic feet; area of the delta of the river, according to Lyell's estimate, 13,000 square miles, and depth of the same, as calculated by Prof. Riddell, 1,056 feet. The delta, consequently, as appears from these figures, contains 400,378,-429,440,000 cubic feet, or 2,720 cubic miles; and it would require for the formation, therefore, of one cubic mile of delta five years and eighty-one days—for the formation of one square mile, of the depth of 1,056 feet, one year sixteen and one-fifth days, and for the formation of the whole delta 14,208 4-5 years. Cincinnati, April 1st.—The news comes from Cynthiana, Ky., of a tragedy in Robertson county near Mount Olivet, on Wednesday evening. J. S. Brewer shot and fatally wounded his brother, R. H. Brewer. The statement is that R. H. Brewer, who is described as being a quarrelsome person, had had trouble with his father in the morning, and at night made an attempt to kill him, shooting twice at BUSINESS DIRECTORY Compiled from the Advertising Columns of the Gazette.
