There is philosophy in the Silver City "Chronicle's" advice: "There is no room here (in New Mexico) for emigrants who have no well-defined object in coming. No one need come if he thinks he will drop right into some easy place. The man who, grown tired of his present position, resolves to go somewhere else, ought to know that he will find, wherever he goes, an entirely new condition of things confronting him. Skilled workmen will find employment here in accordance with their capacity and energy. Some will see openings for business which others who are now idle do not see. Commerce and trade, and industry will absorb all that is best fitted for their purposes. One man will come, become a clerk, enter business for himself and prosper, while his first employer may perhaps fail for want of sagacity, and enter the ranks of the idle. Another
An interesting trial of a new stenographic machine was made in the French Chamber of Deputies the other morning in the presence of M. Gambetta and a number of other officials and members. The mechanism, which is an Italian invention, is worked by a kind of keyboard similar to that of a piano, and the stenographic signs are automatically printed on a continuous ribbon of paper. The signs registered of course represent sounds, irrespective of spelling, and the machine can be used by a person unacquainted with the language spoken. The daughter of the inventor worked the machine successfully, taking down a speech read at average speed in Italian, and one read in French by M. Gambetta, she being ignorant of the latter language. A comparison between the speed of the machine and that of the shorthand writers of the Chamber proved favorable to the former. Further experiments will be made with a view to a possible adoption of the apparatus, which is already in use in the Italian Chambers.
Will our brandy distillers, of whom there are at least sixty in the State, and our wine men remember that the United States imports 13,880,000 lbs. of argols, wine stone and crystals every year, and that by a very little trouble and an expense hardly worth counting, they could save more than would supply this State for making cream of tartar and yeast powders, and have some for shipment extra? At the rate we are planting vines, if all argols were saved, California would supply the demand of the United States in a few years. The value of last year's importations of crude argols, plate and half-refined, was between three and four millions of dollars.—(S. F. Merchant.)
men will find employment here in accordance with their capacity and energy. Another will come and take prominent rank as a lawyer or physician, while hundreds who preceded him will drag out a poor existence in those professions."
The "Alta" of the 10th inst. says: The Pacific Coast Steamship Company have closed the contract with Wm. Cram & Sons, ship-builders, of Philadelphia, for the construction of another magnificent iron steamship, of the following dimensions: 330 feet long (20 feet longer than the "State of California"), 38 feet six inches beam, and 22 feet depth of hold for cargo. She will have 45 and 90-inch cylinders, 45-inch stroke, with all the latest improvements in machinery; will be 3,000 horse-power, and have a guaranteed speed of 16 knots an hour. The vessel will be a success without doubt, and will excel the above speed, as all of Cram's vessels have done, and will have the finest accommodations for passengers and the latest improvements in machinery for handling cargo of any vessel afloat. The contract calls for her completion in ten months, and in about twelve months from date we can record the arrival in our harbor of the par excellence, most complete specimen of naval architecture in the world.
In no part of the United States can sugar beets be grown with such a facility and produce so sure a crop at so small a cost as in Southern California, and though this industry met with a set-back last year through the blunders of those engaged in it, yet it is not impossible that eventually sugar factories will locate here. Whatever may be said of the wine and fruit-raising advantages of Southern California, farmers are pretty unanimous in the opinion that it is no grain growing locality, while root crops are every
The "Herald" of last Saturday had the following railroad news:
We are reliably advised that on and after the 18th instant trains will run over the Southern Pacific Railroad from San Francisco to Kansas City in five days, same schedule as on the Union Pacific, with seven days to reach New York, the same time as over the Central Pacific and Union Pacific. Trains will leave San Francisco at 8:30 A.M. and arrive here at 6:40 A.M., and they will reach Tucson the following morning, and Deming the next evening; that is, in sixty hours from San Francisco. This will be twelve hours quicker time to Tucson than now. Fine speed will be made. The train coming west will leave Los Angeles at 5:15 P.M. and arrive in San Francisco at 3:35 P.M. the next day.
