A correspondent of the Bloomington (Indiana) Progress, writing from this valley, says: "In accordance with request for a letter from this place, I will as briefly as possible comply. "The climate, though not absolutely perfect, is truly delightful, and so far superior to that of Eastern States, that I have never heard one, no matter how dissatisfied, say he preferred Eastern climate to this. The most delicate children can play out of doors 350 days of the year. They grow up in consequence very healthy. I have kept a daily record of the weather for the past two years. During the year 1879 we had 332 pleasant, sunny days, and during that time the breeze came at the rate of but six miles per hour; the other 33 days were rainy or cloudy. The average range of thermometer during January was 55 deg. above zero; three mornings only at 32 deg., when ice was perceptible. The range for the winter was 56 above zero. The average range for the year was 68. During the past year (1880) there were 323 sunny days; during this time the breeze was from the south-west. Rainfall during the winter of '79-'80 was 14.44 inches. "We can boast of a climate temperate in character, equable and moderately stimulating, which will build up and strengthen the weak and enfeebled organization; a climate which would help the invalid and not depress him. This is the kind of a climate Southern California offers to the immigrant—a climate without extremes of heat or cold, and where sunstroke is unknown. The gentle sea breeze tempers the heat of the summer days, and the land breeze from the Sierra Madre cools the air at night. During the warmest part of summer the sleeper requires a blanket at night. "We offer to the immigrant a fertile soil with abundance of water, capable of almost unlimited production. With moderate capital and a reasonable amount of industry he can, in three or four years, surround himself with everything which he may desire, to make life pleasant and enjoyable. All things are possible on these lands to the man that has water. The resources of this valley are many and varied. Fruits of all kinds and of delicious A correspondent of the Louisville Courier-Journal writes: "Several years ago I was coming from Poughkeepsie by boat, and we stopped at Cornwall to take aboard the gentlemen who went early to business in New York. Instead of the usual number there were a great many people who rushed aboard in various stages of indignation and disgust. It was a perfect exodus, and we soon learned the cause. The night before, light bread was set in a Cornwall boarding house pantry to "rise." Bedtime came and all retired—all, at least, save a pet kitten, who prowled about and got into the pantry, and, finding the pan of bread, lay down thereon and went quietly to sleep. The dough yielded gradually, and slowly but surely the kitten was engulfed, the batter closing over and leaving no sign. When morning came the bread was brought in hot. Imagine the scene—all the boarders seated at the table—when that loaf was broken open! They We offer to the mining have a fertile soil with abundance of water, capable of almost unlimited production. With moderate capital and a reasonable amount of industry he can, in three or four years, surround himself with everything which he may desire, to make life pleasant and enjoyable. All things are possible on these lands to the man that has water. The resources of this valley are many and varied. Fruits of all kinds and of delicious quality grow in great profusion. Oranges, lemons, limes, bananas, grapes, pears, apples, peaches, prunes, apricots, cherries, plums, figs, and almost everything grown elsewhere in the United States; besides we have no frost to injure them in the least. Wheat, barley, oats, rye, corn, etc., can be produced in abundance. Vegetables of every description, as well as the fruits, seem to find here a congenial home. I am safe in saying that ten acres of land in this valley, if irrigated, will produce more than forty acres as usually cultivated in Indiana. Alfalfa (a species of clover), which in three months will yield the first cutting, will give a crop of hay each month. Fifty acres will keep sixty cows and a team. I would say that there is no locality in the United States where milk can be produced more abundantly or as cheap as here. Twenty tons of squashes and the same beans are easily grown to the acre, for cow feed. "We are in railroad connection with all parts of the country, and have sea ports within a few miles, accessible by good roads. In one month from this date we will have a southern overland railroad below the snow line, which will be available for the shipment of fruits eastward during the winter. The completion of this road and its all retired—all, at least, save a pet kitten, who prowled about and got into the pantry, and finding the pan of bread, lay down thereon and went quietly to sleep. The dough yielded gradually, and slowly but surely the kitten was engulfed, the batter closing over and leaving no sign. When morning came the bread was brought in hot. Imagine the scene—all the boarders seated at the table—when that loaf was broken open! They left in a body." The following is said to be the language of gloves: "Yes" is said by letting one glove fall; the gloves are rolled in the right hand to say "No." If you would have it understood that you have become indifferent, partly unglove your left hand. To indicate that you desire to be followed, strike your left shoulder with the gloves. "I do not love you any more," is pronounced by striking the gloves several times against the chin. For "I hate you," turn the gloves inside out. "I should wish to be beside you," is said by smoothing the gloves gently. To ask if you are loved, the left hand is gloved, leaving the thumb uncovered. If you wish to make the charming confession, "I love you," both gloves are let fall at once. To give a warning, "be attentive—we are observed," the gloves are turned round the fingers. If you would show that you are displeased strike the back of your hand against your gloves; "furious," you take them away. "My son," said an American father, "how could you marry an Irish girl?" "Why, father," said the sea, "I'm not able to keep two women, and if I'd marry a Yankee girl I'd have to hire an Irish girl to take care of her."
