Scott; prays for an order of the said Superior Court of Los Angeles county, authorizing and directing the Executor of the said estate to execute and deliver to him a deed of conveyance for certain lands particularly described in said petition as follows, to wit:
All that certain lot, piece or parcel of land lying and being in the town of Anaheim, Los Angeles county, State of California, and bounded and described as follows, to wit: The West half of vineyard lot "A 2," containing ten and two-tenths acres, being bounded on the North by North street, on the West by Olive street, on the South by vineyard belonging to Scholl, and on the East by east half of the said vineyard lot "A 2," and an order having this day been made by said Court fixing the time and place for hearing said petition as herdinafter set forth, and requiring this notice to be given.

The Lessons of the Past Season—An Increased Area to be Planted Next Year.
No further demonstration than that furnished by the experiences of the past season is needed to convince all intelligent men that there are no difficulties in the way of making sorghum culture one of the chief industries in this county. The elaborate articles which have heretofore appeared in the Gazette have attracted great attention in the outside world, and have been the subject of much comment by the press in States where sorghum culture is already a gigantic industry—States which in every essential feature are inferior to Southern California for the growth of sorghum and manipulation of the cane. If the soil, climate and general conditions here are immeasurably superior to those of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois and other States in which the growth of sorghum is fast becoming the chief resource of cultivators of the soil, is there any good reason why the industry should not speedily assume gigantic proportions here? If the moneyed men of this county were as liberal or as enterprising as those in the States mentioned are reputed to be, and would invest some of their capital in refining works, they would find no difficulty in procuring all the cane or syrup necessary for running the refinery eight or ten months in the year. The planting of the Minnesota Early Amber cane the coming season will only be limited by the probable number of evaporators which will be in operation next harvest, and if the farmers of this vicinity could have any assistance by competent horticultural authorities that the pear and prune will flourish on alkali land. Some portions of this county furnish an excellent field for giv-

The Panama canal scheme, of which M. de Lemos is the projector, is steadily working its way into public favor on both sides of the Atlantic. Subscriptions for the stock are now being taken in all the principal cities in Europe, and the capitalists of New York are taking hold of the matter in earnest. Win Salgman, the New York banker, is reported as saying that when the subscription books close it will be found that the American people hold the largest amount of stock. It has been agreed by M. de Lemos and his coadjutors that an American Directorate and President shall be appointed, so than after all the significant undertaking will be largely controlled by Americans.

SAN JOSE, Dec. 4, 1880.
EDITOR GAZETTE—Jack Frost took vacation from the first week in July to the first of October, this year; that is, he retreated from the foot-hills west of San Jose for that length of time, returning with renewed energy and glee to search out grapes hidden under the simple vine leaves, such vegetables as might be panic-striken at his appearance, and to send the leaves, yellow with fright, drifting along the streets by the help of his ally, the autumn "breeze." We had shivered, rubbed our noses, stamped our toes, slapped our hands together on the sly, taken a stick of wood to awaken the water in washpitchers to a sense of its ablutionary duty of a morning, observed a suspicious-looking whiteness glittering in the shadows as late as 9 and 10 o'clock A.M., and taking an early constitutional about half-a past six A.M. (to avoid the heat of the day), had seen men and boys hastening to their daily toil with lunch pail at elbow, hands deep in capacious pockets, chins buried in aspiring coat collars (smoking with the heat); had seen various others with turned-back collars and daring hands in open air, leaning airily against house or shop corner, striving to look happy and summery; we had sliced our solid cucumbers into hot water for breakfast—but not until a few days ago, when one of the local papers stated the startling fact that there "had been frost for a few mornings back," did we dare shiver perceptibly, stamp our feet with vigor, wrap a fur collar about acids go farther than grape juice, and things had gone pretty far in many parts where the vine had been yielding less than the necessities of consuming regions required. The Government of several wine producing countries, upon the clamor of the wine-trader guilty in many parts of following up and still improving upon the practices of growers, but prejudicial considerably by the latter, had to interfere in the matter of artificially-made wines, and restrictive laws and regulations have been the consequence. Plastering carried on in France to a degree damaging to the health of consumers of wine, has recently been graded by law to its proper limits. Germany has decreased the marking of artificial wines and such that contain additions to the grape juice.
Under these circumstances, it is well that our California growers understand their interest in keeping their hands clean of making any additions to the pure juices. If Southern California grapes are rich in socharine, depend upon it that abundance need not be weakened; the right kind of wine has to be made of it, and to do that your people have not been slow in acquiring. Thus no need nor convenience exists of augmenting one's vintage by adding water to it. Neither that practice nor the one condemned by the St. Helena Viticultural Association, of employing grape-angar in the manufacture of wine or brandy, can be justified, especially when Providence has so hountifully treated our vineyards this year. As soon as the merchant has to fear stretching and adulteration in the press of the grower, all confidence in the purity of our wines will be lost and discredit will follow. Surely our young industry cannot afford this.
Some 1880 sweet wines from your town have arrived here. Their quality leaves nothing to desire.

The Use of Adulteratives Deprecated.
SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 3, 1880.
EDITOR GAZETTE:—In recent issues of the Gazette you mentioned the use of sugar, glucose, grape and starch sugar for vintage purposes. It is a subject which has more antagonists than partisans. Among the most learned vendigators in Germany, war has been waged about both the convenience and legality of the methods of Cajuned, Gall and Petit. Shortly to explain the three methods of augmenting the quantity of the vintage, I may mention that Chaptal introduced in France the addition of sugar to peanut juice—a system not at all blainable where the quality of the must requires that addition, although commonly where in cold regions the grape is of a scarce marcheline content, soy abound, and the right proportion is difficult to be measured artificially. L. Gall recommended, and was in safety listened to, to reduce the name of sugar in must by the application of water and bringing up the saccharine content of the liquid to about 25 per cent. Bolton's method of stretching the yield of the vine consists in adding sugar and water to the husks, thus multiplying the quantity of juice by repeated additions to the press and fermenting waste, and after examining the free mash of juice and husks in the liquid, even supplying them artificially.
The indications of the three multifacies of improved and augmented vintages have of course found manufacturers and led to inventing ways to make sugar, water and
