WEEKLY GAZETTE SATURDAY...AUGUST 7, 1880 The Gazette goes to press every Friday afternoon and is delivered to subscribers on the following morning. All communications must reach this office on Thursday night at latest, in order to ensure publication on the day following. Advertisements received up to noon on Fridays. ST. MICHAEL'S CHURCH — Services every Sunday morning at 11 o'clock. All are invited to attend Sunday School at 10 o'clock. Kleinigkeiten. Congressman Pacheco is in Los Angeles. A full supply of LEGAL BLANKS kept for sale at the Gazette office. Candidates can get any kind of election printing done at this office in good style. Mr. B. Dreyfus will leave for San Francisco this morning to be gone about a week. It is said that the water in the river is steadily increasing in volume. The new time schedule of the P. C. S. S. Co. is published this morning. Mr. C. Tustin has made a sale of his fine home place at Tustin City. Messrs. Werder, Luedke and F. Backs have gone on a week's trip through San Bernardino county. The fees of the County Clerk for the month of July amounted to $624.95; those of the Recorder, $728.10. Miss Mamie Perry of Los Angeles has gone to Italy to pursue her musical studies in that land of song. We are indebted to Mr. L. Upson of Centralia for a present of peaches. The fact that Mr. Upson never irrigates his trees probably accounts for the fine flavor of the fruit. The Board of Supervisors held meetings on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, but transacted no business of moment. They —The Railroad Commissioners have been requested to hold a meeting at Bakersfield, Kern county, the petitioners reciting that they are suffering under many oppressions of the Southern Pacific Railroad Company, which they believe the Commissioners have power to remove. We are waiting patiently to hear of some newspaper Smart Aleck suggesting that the invitation is a deep plot to inveigle the Commissioners into that fever-stricken locality, in the hope that the insidious malaria will get in its work on the distinguished Three. It is a peculiarity of Bakersfield fever that it never kills; it merely unifies the victim for pursuing his ordinary avocations. It would be a terrible thing if it seized upon the Railroad Commissioners, and thus prevented them from carrying out the noble and vast reforms they have already inaugurated. —The San Diego Union says that the tannery at that place employs nine hands and that its products find a ready sale. The business is prospering, notwithstanding the drawbacks incident to a lack of proper machinery and a scarcity of water. This being the case, it is passing strange that the well-equipped tannery in Anaheim is suffered to remain idle. A practical tanner, who could bring with him recommendations as to his efficiency and industry, could no doubt lease the works from the company who owns them for a merely nominal sum, and we do not see why the business could not be as successfully carried on here as at San Diego. Oak bark is as abundant and cheap here as there; there is a large home market for leather and the cost of transportation to foreign markets is not as great. We hope that ere long some practical, pushing tanner will revive this business in Anaheim. —Mr. J. W. Sallee, a farmer of our valley, has discovered a novel way of destroying linnets and other birds which are proving so destructive to fruit. He mixes strychnine and vinegar in the following proportions: one-eighth ounce of strychnine to two ounces of vinegar; this he puts on fruit upon which the birds have commenced to work. He informs us that he has tried the experiment for three days with marked success. The Value of Railroad We are indebted to Capt. of the County Assayer's lowing statement of the railroad property in Los county: Value of roadbed, rails and way in county... Value of roadbed, rails and way of Los Angeles & I dence R. R. in city limi Value of franchises... Value of rolling stock... Value of telegraph... Depot and land S.P.K.R. We hope that ere long some practical, pushing tanner will revive this business in Anaheim. Mr. J. The first day he found sixty-five birds under the trees, the second one hundred and sixty-three, and the third one hundred and seven. He thinks if all would try the experiment the pests would soon disappear.—Santa Ana Times. The Railroad Company now offer to sell thirty trip tickets for thirty dollars, good for four months, and entitling the holder to passage from Anaheim to Los Angeles and vice versa. The agent, however, finds it impossible to sell these tickets, as few people average seven trips a month to the county seat. It seems that our anxiety to breakfast off broiled quails led us into error in stating that the game law expired with the last day of July. The last Legislature, of blessed memory, extended the prohibitory season until the 15th of September, a fact of which we were not aware until Judge Bailey informed us. By reference to the advertisement, it will be seen that the City Bakery is now in operation again, it having been leased to Mr. George Lerner, a practical baker. He ought to be well patronized. Adjoining the bakery is a saloon, where liquid refreshments are kept in abundance. The Board of Town Trustees held their regular monthly meeting on Wednesday. An ordinance fixing water rates was adopted, and it will doubtless be published in due time. Mr. C. Bennerscheidt was appointed Engineer of the Town water works, vice Dalton, resigned. We have received the finest assortment of letter paper and note paper ever brought to Anaheim. Merchants, winegrowers and others who desire a neat letter head or envelope should bring their orders to the Gazette Job Office. There are packages in the Express office for Mrs. Victoria King, Miss A. Heimann, J. M. Guinn, E. Dunham, J. Jordan and J. Aldridge. A corn stalk over thirteen feet in height decorates the Bank of Anaheim... It was raised on the farm of Mr. J. J. Schmidt. The article on the wheat fields of Los Angeles county, from the pen of our special reporter, should be carefully read. There were rumors on the street yesterday of a big strike in two of the Silverado mines. It is generally supposed that people generally tend invariably to be cured, by say that Green's Auction to our knowledge, faint and Liver Complaint as Sour Stomach, Coache, Palpitation of the bad taste in the mouth 000 dozen bottles sold. For lame back, side LOH'S POROUS PLANT Sold by Wm. M. Higgins Crane & Brigham, W.Francisco. False In We are indebted to Postmaster Dunkelberger for a specimen of the celebrated "magnetic seed" of Mexico. This natural curiosity well repays a little attention. It may indeed possess magnetic powers. It may be that, within the hermetically sealed contines of the seed, there may be an imprisoned worm, but even then the thing is remarkable. This so-called "magnetic seed" looks a little like a tonca bean cut in two. A box full of them makes as big a din as though a hundred tarantulas were buzzing therein.—Herald. A Fine Piece of Work. The Gazette reporter accepted an invitation on Thursday from Mr. D. W. Fish, to inspect the family carriage which he had just completed for Mr. Dreyfus, and on visiting the paint shop in the second story of Mr. McDermott's carriage factory he saw an elegant piece of workmanship. The skill of the painter and the taste of the trimmer combined have made the carriage a thing of beauty. The painting is the work of Mr. L. E. Fish, who arrived from Cincinnati a short time ago, and who intends to remain here with his parents. Continuous employment for many years in the large factories in the Eastern States, where a spirit of emulation exists among workmen, has made him a master in the art of carriage painting, and in this, his initial job, he has fairly surpassed himself. The trimming is the work of Mr. D. W. Fish, and is in excellent taste. It is coarsely colored, morocco finish, and the general design enhances to the utmost the appearance of the carriage, and fitsly accords with the superior painting of the vehicle. Take it all in all it establishes the fact that the Means. Fish have no superior in their line of business, and we are glad to know that they will carry on the business in conjunction. They ask the patronage of the public, and we are sure it will be accorded them. The Westminster Presbyterian social will be held in their Hall on Friday evening, August 13th. A cordial invitation is extended to all. The ladies at their last business meeting decided by a vote of the society to hold their socials as heretofore advertised (on or before the fall moon of each month) but changed their evening from Tuesday to Friday. Ours being closed out at cost at Mrs. Flora Brown's. There are packages in the Express once for Mrs. Victoria King, Miss A. Heimann, J. M. Guinn, E. Dunham, J. Jordan and J. Aldridge. The article on the wheat fields of Los Angeles county, from the pen of our special reporter, should be carefully read. There were rumors on the street yesterday of a big strike in two of the Silverado mines. A swimming match for prizes will be given at the Landing shortly.
