WEEKLY GAZETTE SATURDAY... MAY 29, 1850 The Gazette goes to press every Friday afternoon and is delivered to subscribers on the following morning. All communications must reach this office on Thursday night at latest, in order to ensure publication on the day following. Advertisements received up to noon on Fridays. ST. MICHAEL'S CHURCH — Services every Sunday morning at 11 o'clock. All are invited to attend Sunday School at 10 o'clock. Kleinigkeiten. A full supply of LEGAL BLANKS kept for sale at the Gazette office. Handsomely printed Bill-heads and Letter-heads, for all kinds of business, at the Gazette office. The Episcopal Church Social will take place on next Friday night at Metz Hall. See advertisement. Messrs. Goodman & Rimpan will the coming week receive a case of ladies' and gentlemen's summer goods. Mr. and Mrs. P. H. Look arrived from San Francisco on Wednesday evening, and will remain in Anaheim some time. Rev. Mr. Fraser, of Oakland, will preach in the Presbyterian church on Sunday, morning and evening. A. W. Ryan of Los Angeles is now a member of the Democratic State Central Committee. It is rumored in Los Angeles that the St. Charles Hotel is to be converted into a theater. Mr. Hippolyte Cahen has received a new lot of summer fancy goods, ribbons, laces, hose, etc. The ladies are especially invited to inspect the new goods. The alarm of fire given on last Saturday afternoon was caused by the discovery of some burning rubbish in the rear of Kreeger's block on Centre Street. It was extinguished before any damage was done. About 9 o'clock on Wednesday night a stable in the rear of Leonard & Drown's meat market was found to be on fire. The efficiency of our water system was displayed for the first time, and it is safe to say that any lingering objections which may have lurked in the minds of the tax-payers against the cost of the introduction of the system, were removed by seeing the effect it had in staying this fire. The barn, which was owned by Mr. T. Boege, was damaged to some extent and about $15 worth of hay belonging to Messrs. Leonard & Drown was burned. The loss, of course, is only trivial, but the fire would have done great havoc among adjacent buildings had there been a breeze blowing, or had the firemen not mastered it as soon as they did. After the fire, a tramp was arrested on suspicion of being the incendiary, and lodged in jail. He was released on the following morning, however, as no evidence was forthcoming to substantiate the charge. A gentleman in Spadra has addressed the following communication to the Gazette: "I take this method of warning the public against a swindler by the name of _____. He claims to be a blacksmith and an Odd Fellow, but is neither. He has been in the vicinity of Spadra and Pomona for about a year. He is a large, portly man; weight, about 225 lb. He is a member of the Independent Order of Good Templars, and likes his whirkey." We refrain from prudential reasons, from inserting the name of the alleged swindler, whose chief offense appears to be that he is a Good Templar and a toper at one and the same time. We hope he will soon realize the impossibility of serving two masters, and give up his whirkey. Says the Journal: On Saturday morning we stated that Mr. E. F. Spence, Cashier of the Commercial Bank had been mentioned as a probable candidate on the Republican Anahiems School Examination The annual examination of the Public Schools will begin on Wednesday, June 2. The classes in the advanced grade Guinn's room) will be examined on day forenoon and afternoon, and on day forenoon. The classes in the distate and primary departments will amined on Friday forenoon and Graduating and Literary exercises held in Mr. Guinn's room on Thursday noon, commencing at 2 o'clock. Ercises will be more than usually insisted in interested in educational matters cordially invited to attend the extra and other exercises. Marshal Barham has had some in collecting the dog license, the gnrefusal in most cases being that finance fixing the license was never The town charter, (and it is with say it) does not require the public ordinances, but that the dense which prevails on the subject may pelled, we publish the ordinance, that Marshal Barham intends to like the good officer that he is: ORDINANCE No. 1 An Ordinance lestying a Dog Tax for a Year 1880-81 for the Town of Anaheim dain as follows: SECTION 1. That there be and levied a tax of two (2) dollars wu dog or bitch owned or kept in Anaheim. SEC. 2. Any person paying such be furnished with a tag for subitch, by the Marshal, and even bitch not having a tag shall be charged by the Marshal and kept tha(24) hours, and if not redeemed tpiration of that time, by paying tha shal the license tax due on said dog together with fifty cents as chargeure and keeping, such dog or bitch disposed of by said Marshal. SEC. 3. This ordinance shall from and after its passage. A. Chas. Wagner offers a reward of $25 for the recovery of the animals which were stolen from him on the 7th inst. The colt is a valuable animal, and its loss is keenly felt by Mr. Wagner. Mr. C. Wille, our cooper, is making honey barrels by the thousand. He has got the method of making them down to an exact science, and apiarists who once try his barrels will use no others. By reference to the notice at the head of this column it will be seen that there will be service at the Episcopal church regularly each Sunday, and until further notice there will be evening service and lectures beginning at 7:30 p.m. To effectually and finally settle a mooted question, we are authorized to say that the Southern Pacific Railroad Co. has no present or remote intention of rebuilding its wharf at Santa Monica. It has had an experience in that kind of enterprise that will, from present indications, be realized by others in the near future.—Herald. When you can get a business suit made to order for $20 it is time to award the palm for cheapness to the enterprising gentleman who boldly brings prices down to such a low notch. The proprietor of the Merchant Tailoring Emporium has put prices of clothing so low that it is within the power of every one to dress like a millionaire. Speaking of the accident which happened to Dr. Fergusson on the San Bernardino road, the Colton Semi-Tropic says: "We are informed that all of this road that lies in San Bernardino county has been put in thorough repair. If Los Angeles county will do her share there will be no complaint about it." On last Sunday the horses attached to a carriage in which sat Mr. G. H. Kellogg's little daughter, became frightened at something and ran away from in front of the Kellogg residence. When near the residence of Judge Bailey, a jolt of the carriage threw the child out, and she quite miraculously escaped the slightest injury. The runaway team was subsequently captured, and everything found intact. An attempt was made one day last week to burglarize the residence of A. Milla, of Garden Grove. On the night in question, Mr. Mills' daughters were awakened by hearing some one trying to open the door of the house. Failing to effect an entrance in that way, they were proceeding to open a year. He is a large, portly man; weight, about 225 lbs. He is a member of the Independent Order of Good Templars, and likes his whisky." We refrain, from prudential reasons, from inserting the name of the alleged swindler, whose chief offense appears to be that he is a Good Templar and a toper at one and the same time. We hope he will soon realize the impossibility of serving two masters, and give up his whiskey. Says the Journal: On Saturday morning we stated that Mr. E.F. Spence, Cashier of the Commercial Bank had been mentioned as a probable candidate on the Republican ticket for County Treasurer. At an early hour that morning we received a note from Mr. Spence, saying that he was not, neither would he be, under any circumstances, a candidate for that office. He adds, with grim humor: "A seat in the City Council of Los Angeles should satisfy the most ambitious." On reflection and careful consideration, we think Mr. Spence is right. On last Monday morning two cows were stolen from Mr. F.J. J. Schmidt's place. Information of the theft having been conveyed to Officer Bohn, he kept a vigilant lookout, and early on Tuesday morning he discovered the cattle in town in the possession of a Mexican. The officer called on the man to surrender, but instead of doing so, he rode off as fast as his horse could carry him, leaving his prey in Bohn's possession. Mr. Fritz Reuter of Santa Ana informs us that he has taken charge of the arrangements for a Fourth of July celebration at the large shady grove of Mr. Silas Ritchey. A dancing platform will be erected, and an abundance of artesian water will be brought on the ground through pipes laid from the well. The music will be first-class and nothing will be left undone to secure the pleasure of visitors. Mr. J.C. Hill is in town from Silverado-Mr. Hill brings cheering news from that mining camp. Work is being prosecuted night and day on several of the mines, and the fact of their value or worthlessness will soon be demonstrated. We hope within a few weeks to be able to publish some facts regarding Silverdo which will be astonishing news to most people. The wife of George Lundy, of Mountain View Bee Ranch, San Fernando, was very seriously burned on Wednesday, while attempting to save valuables in the house, which had taken fire during her temporary absence. She was taken to the County hospital. A game of baseball will positively be played to-day on the Anaheim Recreation Grounds, the contestants being the nine of the Los Angeles Academy and a nine composed in part of the Anaheim Club. The game will begin at 11 o'clock sharp. It is said that the Rev. Mr. Trew, formerly of Anaheim, has resigned the rectorship of Trinity Church, Santa Barbara, and proposes to remove to San Gabriel, taking An attempt was made one day last week to burglarize the residence of A. Mills, of Garden Grove. On the night in question, Mr. Mills' daughters were awakened by hearing some one trying to open the door of the house. Failing to effect an entrance in that way, they were proceeding to open a window when the outcries of the young ladies alarmed the marauders and they fled. It is thought that the object of the burglars was to get some money which it was supposed Mr. Mills had in the house, he having sold a lot of corn the day before. Judgment has been entered by Judge Howard in the Superior Court against the bondmen of A. J. Hamilton, by consent as follows: P Boutwell, $700; Henry Stasforth, $560; George Cummings, $700; J. C. Salisbury, $280; J. W. Gillette, $250; H. K. W. Bent, $910; and Martin Devine, $420. The judgment also provided that in case the amounts adjudged against Bent and Goldsworthy are not paid by them, the other parties (Devine excepted) are to pay each $130 in addition to satisfy the judgment against Bent and $100 to satisfy that against Goldsworthy, T. S. Hall, Geo. Cummings and J. H. Lucas, who were on the original bond, but did not enter into the agreement on which this judgment was rendered. The judgment is in accordance with a voluntary offer of those against whom it is rendered.—Herald. At the stores of Messrs. H. Cahen and A. Langenberger there is now kept regularly on hand a supply of hams made at the pork-packing establishment of Mr. Robert Eccles in Westminster. The products of this establishment are rapidly working their way into public favor, and it is one of the few industries which has made marked progress during the past year of depression. Mr. Eccles informs us that he is much encouraged at the way in which his cords are finding a market, and he has too much business agility to allow himself to commit the too common error of failing to keep his goods up to the standard which the public will hereafter expect them to maintain. We advise every one to test these hams as we have done, and they will consurge in our decision that they are not in any respect inferior to the imported articles. A game of baseball will positively be played to-day on the Anaheim Recreation Grounds, the contestants being the nine of the Los Angeles Academy and a nine composed in part of the Anaheim Club. The game will begin at 11 o'clock sharp. It is said that the Rev. Mr. Trew, formerly of Anaheim, has resigned the rectorship of Trinity Church, Santa Barbara, and proposes to remove to San Gabriel, taking charge of a church at that place. There are packages at Wells, Fargo & Co's Express office for H. Werder, E. M. Ferguson, Blanchard & Co. and Samuel Pratt. Also a letter for F. Hartung. A large consignment of new and fancy crockery was unpacked yesterday at Mr. A. Langenberger's. The Anaheim Fire Company will go to Los Angeles on Monday, Decoration Day, to take part in the procession. Thermometrical Record. Marshal Barham has had some difficulty collecting the dog license, the grounds of real in most cases being that the ordinance fixing the license was never published.
