"The May number of the Pacific Medical and Surgical Journal contains a letter written by Dr. Walter Lindley of Los Angeles, describing a surgical operation (the removal of a tumor from under the arm of a resident here), which had been performed by Mrs. Dr. Higgins of Anaheim, assisted by Mrs. Dr. Stuart of Santa Barbara. After describing at length the manner of the operation, Dr. Lindley says: 'This operation was performed rapidly yet carefully, and should go on record to the credit of the ladies. When a woman has had brain, pluck and energy enough to secure by hard work a diploma from a reliable medical college, I believe our grand profession should display its liberality by bidding her a hearty God-speed. Yet I would by no means advise any woman to undergo the privations necessary in order to become a physician. There are other walks in life more suitable for women. Nevertheless there are notable exceptions tothis as well as all other rules. Mrs. Higgins in Anaheim and Mrs. Stuart in Santa Barbara, each has an extensive practice. They are a credit to the college from which they graduated, to the profession to which they belong and a blessing to the communities in which they are located."
While driving to the Rincon Thursday, Dr. R. A. Fergusson came near being the victim of a serious accident. In driving down one of the dangerous grades on the so-called road to San Bernardino, one of his horses got frightened at some object lying in the road and began to kick, ending with getting his foot caught in the single-tree. In his struggles to release himself, he fell down, and as the road at that particular point is only just wide enough for a wagon to pass, the horse came within a hair's breadth of rolling over the precipice, in which event he would have taken the carriage and its occupant with him. With considerable labor, the animal was got on his feet again and quieted down. This road is a standing disgrace to the county, and the more dangerous points should receive instant attention from the authorities.

A telegram from Washington says: The Postmaster General, at the instance of Senator Farley, has authorized the postmaster at Wilmington to advertise for proposals for transferring the mails from the post-office to the anchorage, five or six miles distant. No special provision has heretofore been made for performing this service.
The County Board of Education organized on Saturday by the election of W.P. McDonald President, Mr. Hinton, the County School Superintendent, being ex-officio Secretary. Messrs. J. M. Gunn and Dr. Kurtz drew the two-year term and G. C. Hall and W. P. McDonald the one-year term, commencing July 1st. The County teachers' examination was appointed for June 8th.
A short time ago, this city was agitated by the elopement of a step-mother with her step-son. Divorce was obtained by the husband and father, and now comes the sequel that the wicked step-mother has married the erring son and they are living happily in Oakland. In the meantime the injured husband and father has married 'and is living here.' All's well that ends well. Journal.
The Downey Courier launches this bit of sarcasm at the Democratic County Committee: We have been requested by the Democrats of this precinct to inform the Democratic Central Committee that Silver precinct has no existence; that the building designated as Crowell's store was burned long since; and that F. M. Buster has lived in Wilmington for years. In other respects the late call of the Committee, in reference to this locality, was correct.
At the Democratic County Convention, held in Los Angeles on last Saturday, the following were elected delegates to the State Convention which meets in Oakland on the 19th inst: First district—A. B. Moffit, J. S. Crawford, S. M. White, E. H. Workman, Jacob Kuhrts, Wallace Woodworth; second district—J. Baruch, G. P. Miller, J. M. Bracewell; third district—J.

"It is a pity," said a friend the other day, "that wool brings such a high price." "Because," he explained as he saw us reaching for a club, "if wool was low, there wouldn't be so many sheep in the country; if there were not so many sheep in the country, the coyotes wouldn't have spring lamb for breakfast every morning; if the coyotes did not have spring lamb for breakfast every morning, they would have to appease their appetites with rabbits; if they appeased their appetites with rabbits, there wouldn't be so many of the derned things to eat our trees and vines." Having thus to his own satisfaction established the connection between the price of wool and one of the difficulties which beset horticulture in some localities, he left us to our own reflections.
The Right Rev. Wm. Ingraham Kip, Bishop of California, is now making his annual visitation in this portion of his diocese and is expected to reach Anaheim to night. To-morrow being Whit-Sunday, he will hold services in St. Michael's church as follows: Morning prayer and sermon to begin at 11 A.M., at which time there will be an Ordination. The Holy Communion will be administered by the Bishop, assisted by the Rev. C. F. Loop, of Pomona. Evening prayer and sermon at 7:30 P.M., at which time the Sacrament of Baptism will be administered. On Monday morning at 11 A.M., St. Michael's church will be consecrated according to the form and ritual of the Protestant-Episcopal church. All are cordially invited to attend these services.
At a recent meeting of the Metamora Debating Club, of Metamora, Ill., a long series of resolutions were passed, tracing the growth of the Club since its establishment in 1862, recounting the success which various members had attained in the different paths of life and concluding by declaring W. B. Lamson, familiarly known as "Uncle Billy Lamson," now of Westminster, an honorary member of the Club, and recommending him as a good citizen of irreproachable character. Mr. Lamson was one of the founders of the Club, and this kindly unsolicited testimonial to his worth is greatly appreciated by him.
Messrs. A. Guy Smith & Co. report a very decided increase of business lately, and other evidence is not wanting of the approach of the good time coming. Mr. S. H. Mott, President of the Bank of Anaheim, who was in town Thursday, informs us that business is now much livelier at the county seat than it was a month ago.

Baruch, G. P. Miller, J. M. Bracewell; third district—J. deBarth Shorb, Asa Ellis, F. Palomares; fourth district—W. A. Spurgeon, Isaac Cohen, Richard Egan. A resolution was adopted, empowering the delegates to represent Los Angeles county in any Democratic Convention that may be held to nominate Presidential Electors and a candidate for Congress for the Fourth district during the present year. A resolution endorsing Wallace Leach's candidature for Congress and one instructing the delegates to vote for R. F. del Valle for that office were both laid on the table, and the delegates go to the State Convention uninstructed.
Mrs. Dr. Higgins met with quite an adventure on last Friday afternoon, while driving to Los Angeles in company with her son. When near the eucalyptus grove on the Laguna ranch, she observed a man on horseback coming across the plain directly towards the carriage, and she instinctively felt that it was his purpose to intercept her. As he reached the carriage she saw that his face was whitened with chalk or flour, as a disguise. He called out "stop," and grasped one of the reins. Instead of obeying him, Mrs. Higgins struck one of the horses a sharp blow with the whip and the animal, being young and spirited, plunged forward, causing the man to release his hold on the reins. He put spurs to his horse, however, and again tried to stop the carriage, but Mrs. Higgins called in a loud tone to her son to "shoot the villain." Fortunately, Charles had a small pistol in his pocket, one of the toy kind, and he promptly blazed away at the man, who rode off at great speed upon hearing the report of the pistol.
A picnic will be held at the Santiago canyon on Sunday, the 16th inst. There is a general good time anticipated. Preparations have been made to have a string band on the ground. Everybody throughout the valley is cordially invited.
Messrs. A. Guy Smith & Co., report a very decided increase of business lately, and other evidence is not wanting of the approach of the good time coming. Mr. S. H. Mott, President of the Bank of Anaheim, who was in town Thursday, informs us that business is now much livelier at the county seat than it was a month ago.
The new vineyards of Mr. A. Langenberger and Mr. J. P. Zeyn, south of town, have been enclosed with rabbit-proof fences. We may note the singular fact in this connection, that bunny ignores the Mission vine entirely when he can regale himself on the foreign varieties.
Deputy County Assessor Knox will be in Westminster on next Wednesday and Thursday. Residents of that vicinity who desire to give in their assessment lists should call upon the Assessor on the days mentioned.
Anaheim needs a harness-maker and saddler worse than anything else at present. If this should meet the eye of any artist in leather who is seeking a good location, an invitation is given to him to locate here.
By advertisement in another column it will be seen that a mare and colt strayed or were stolen from Mr. Chas. Wagner's ranch last week. A liberal reward will be paid by Mr. Wagner for the return of the animals.
Mr. H. Cahen is selling out his stock of ready-made clothing at greatly reduced rates as he intends to give up that part of his business.
Messrs. Grimshaw & Sorenson have commenced work on their fruit dryer. It will probably be in working order by the time the fruit crop is ripe.
J.A. Kelley, formerly Internal Revenue Collector of this District, is now keeping a salcon at Tombstone, Arizona.
A Calico Ball will be given at Kroeger's Hall on the evening of May 21st. The ladies will furnish a lunch.
There was a slight frost at different points near the coast on Wednesday morning.
The Signal Service officer at Los Angeles furnishes the following weather prognosis:
During the month of May winds blowing from the southwest or southeast or from directions between those points are the winds found to be most likely to be followed by rain.
Mr. J. Bennerscheidt keeps as fine an importment of hardware as can be found in the county. It is surprising how many little trevalties there are in this kind of business. One of these novelties is a revolving sprinkling attachment which everyone having a garden should procure. They cost but a trifle and are useful and ornamental.
"Memorial Day" Monday, May 31st, will be observed by the members of the G. R. in Los Angeles. The soldiers' graves will be decorated in accordance with the annual custom.
The editorial garden has been further beautified by a large-orange tree, a present from Mr. R. H. Gilman, Superintendent of the S. C. Semi-Tropical Fruit Company's nursery.
Marshal Barham is enforcing the dog ordinance, and owners of respectable canines should procure a tag at once.

A Fine Thing for the Teeth.
Fragrant SOZODONT is a composition of the purest and choicest ingredients of the Oriental vegetable kingdom. Every ingredient is well known to have a beneficial effect on the teeth and gums. Its embalming or antiseptic property and aromatic fragrance makes it a toilet luxury. SOZODONT removes all disagreeable odors from the breath caused by catarrh, bad teeth, etc. It is entirely free from the injurious and acrid properties of tooth pastes and powders which destroy the enamel. One bottle will last six months.
August Flower.
The immense sale and great popularity of Green's August Flower in all towns and villages in the civilized world has caused many imitators to adopt similar names, expecting to reap a rich harvest for themselves at the expense of the afflicted. This medicine was introduced in 1868, and for the cure of dyspepsia and liver complaint, with their effects, such as sour stomach, costive nausea, sick stomach, sick headache, indigestion, palpitation of the heart, vertigo, etc., it never has failed to our knowledge. Three doses will relieve any case of dyspepsia. Two million bottles sold last year. Price 75 cents. Samples 10 cents.

Is a compound of the virtues of sarsaparilla, stillingia, mandrake, yellow dock, with the lodide of potash and iron, all powerful blood-making, blood-cleansing, and life-sustaining elements. It is the purest, safest, and most effectual alternative medicine known or available to the public. The sciences of medicine and chemistry have never produced so valuable a remedy, nor one so potent to cure all diseases resulting from impure blood. It cures Scrofula and all scrofulous diseases, Erysipelas, Rose, or St. Anthony's Fire, Pimples and Face-grubs, Pustules, Blotches, Boils, Tumors, Tetter, Humors, Salt Rheum, Scald-head, Ring-worm, Ulcers, Sores, Rheumatism, Mercurial Disease, Neuralgia, Female Weaknesses and Irregularities, Jaundice, Affections of the Liver, Dyspepsia, Emaciation, and General Debility.
By its searching and cleansing qualifies it purges out the foul corruptions which contaminate the blood and cause derangement and decay. It stimulates and enlivens the vital functions, promotes energy and strength, restores and preserves health, and infuses new life and vigor throughout the whole system. No sufferer from any disease which arises from impurity of the blood need despair who will give Ayer's SARSAPARILLA a fair trial.
It is folly to experiment with the numerous low-priced mixtures of cheap materials, and without medicinal virtues, offered as blood-purifiers, while disease becomes more firmly seated. Ayer's SARSAPARILLA is a medicine of such concentrated curative power, that it is by far the best, cheapest, and most reliable blood-purifier known. Physicians know its composition, and prescribe it. It has been widely used for forty years, and has won the unqualified confidence of millions whom it has benefited.
