The Campaign Against Frost.
This is the season of anxiety for vineyardists—the season when black frost is to be feared. A frost just about this time would do an incalculable amount of damage to the whole country; although in Anaheim its effect would be in a great measure nullified by the use of smoke. Nearly all the vineyardists have piles of weeds and grape cuttings surrounding their vineyards, and it is safe to say that the proprietors of the gas works in Los Angeles have sold more coal tar this year than during the past five years combined. Sheet-iron vessels, in which to carry the burning tar from point to point, have also been purchased by the hundred; and arrangements have, we believe, been made with the night watchman to give a general alarm whenever the thermometer indicates an approach to the freezing point. It will be seen that the most extraordinary precautions have been taken by our citizens to guard against damage by frost, but we have heard of no similar preventives being adopted in other communities.
The first thirteen days of April are considered the critical period, and if they are passed safely there is little likelihood of any damage being done. There has been frost in May, however. Indeed, the hardest frost ever known here occurred on the night of the 1st of May, 1859, but Anaheim was then in its infancy and the vines were too young and vigorous to suffer much from the visitation. A heavy frost also fell on the nights of the 12th and 13th of May, 1862. It often occurs that frost only does damage in spots; it will seriously blight one vineyard and scarcely touch the adjoining one. That of May, 1862, exhibited this peculiarity in a marked degree, a majority of the vineyards escaping damage, while others suffered severely.
— The Anaheim Literary Union met in the Presbyterian church Thursday eve., April 8. Vice Pres. Miss Brier again presided. The first in the literary exercises was a reading by Miss Carrie Seibert, entitled "Billy's First and Last Drink." This was followed by a reading, "Beauty at the Bench," by Miss Sadie Crowther. The failure of the music committee resulted in a volunteer by Mrs. Parker, song and chorus (wanting), title and words, "Go On." A "Letter from Washington" was also read by Mrs. Parker. After recess Miss Alice Chase kindly volunteered a ballad entitled "The Day is Dark and Dreary." Mr. F. P. Marsh gave a declamation and Mr. Leonard Kellogg favored with a volunteer, "Help to Read." A peculiar document was filed in the County Recorder's office on Monday, from which it appears that Richard Soward, aged 72 years and Milly Catharine Thurman, aged 70 years, agree to become husband and wife, without any marriage ceremony other than the filing of the agreement in the Recorder's office. Both parties live at San Gabriel.
Mr. N. Gray has leased his orchard near the depot to Mr. A. Von Babo, and will leave to-morrow for San Francisco, where he intends to engage in business. We hope he will meet with success in all his undertakings. A son of Mr. Gray left San Francisco yesterday morning for Alaska, to fill an engagement with the Alaska Fur Co.
The Arizona train, which left Los Angeles on Friday of last week, met with an accident on the down grade east of Cabazon.
Leonard Kellogg favored with a volunteer, "Helps to Read." Mrs. Parker gave a "little talk," and offered a few suggestions which were embodied in a motion to substitute "definitions of uncommon words" for the "queries." Mr. Campbell amended by having the said definitions in connection with the queries; carried as amended. Mrs. Parker resigned her position on the query committee, and Mr. Taylor was appointed by the chair. Mr. F. P. Marsh also resigned a similar position, and the chair appointed Mr. C. W. Campbell to fill the vacancy. A growing opposition to having the church used for literary purposes was represented and advocated by Mr. Al Taylor. "It didn't surprise" Mrs. Parker, and, in saying so, she gave some remarks which the society would do well to heed. The programme for next meeting, April 15, is as follows: Music; recitation; Miss Lydia Parker; declamation; Mr. Al Taylor; recitation, Miss Sallie Hilmer; reading, Mr. J. M. Guinn; song, Mr. T. S. Grimshaw; reading, Mr. Geo. Shaffer; declamation, Mr. Ernest Ferguson; music; recitation, Miss Mary Brier; recitation, Miss Mary Kraemer; reading, Miss Rosa Campbell; declamation, Mr. D.R.Payne; recess; answering queries; reading of the Leader.
In regard to the burning and robbing of the store at Spadra last week, Mr. Caldwell, the proprietor, says that he and his roommate were awakened about 12:30 A.M.on April 1st by a loud explosion, and on investigating they found the front of the store all in flames. They tried to save some goods, but the store burned so rapidly that they only got out a few overalls. Mr. Caldwell estimates his loss at $5,500, less an insurance of $3,500. The only reason why robbery is suspected is because a box containing some pocket knives and collar buttons and a box of sardines were found in front of the store after the fire had subsided.
The Board of Town Trustees met in regular session on Wednesday. Only routine business was transacted. The Clerk was instructed to issue a letter of recommendation to Mr. J.F.Dalton, testifying to his efficiency as town engineer and to his faithfulness to duty. The Board adjourned until Wednesday, April 28th, at which time it will meet to canvass the election returns and issue certificates of election to those entitled to receive them.
Immediately after we had drawn attention to the destitute condition of Mrs.Heffner, Marshal Payne solicited contributions

The Arizona train, which left Los Angeles on Friday of last week, met with an accident on the down grade east of Cabazon. The couplings of some of the cars broke, and the result was that nineteen cars were piled on top of each other. John Wyatt, of Los Angeles, was killed, and a fireman who jumped from the engine was wounded, but not seriously. The damage to the property of the railroad company is estimated at $10,000.
At the meeting of the Presbytery in Los Angeles last week, it was decided to group the churches of the Santa Ana Valley, as follows: Westminster and Newport, under one pastorate; Anaheim and Santa Ana; Colton and Arlington. Orange having a supply at present was not grouped with any other, but should it decide at any time to agree with Anaheim or Santa Ana, or both, in calling one who would be acceptable to all, it would probably be grouped with them. The Rev. Mr. Ellia, formerly of Chico, was installed as pastor of the Los Angeles church, and from the unanimity of the call and satisfaction expressed by all his people, he seems likely to heal the dissensions which have so long hindered its growth.
Mr. Herman C. Kruger has taken charge of the wood department of H. J. McDermott's shop, Anaheim. He is an experienced hand in the business. All work can now be finished promptly and in the very best manner. Repairing will receive immediate attention.
The Board of Town Trustees met in regular session on Wednesday. Only routine business was transacted. The Clerk was instructed to issue a letter of recommendation to Mr. J. F. Dalton, testifying to his efficiency as town engineer and to his faithfulness to duty. The Board adjourned until Wednesday, April 28th, at which time it will meet to canvass the election returns and issue certificates of election to those entitled to receive them.
Immediately after we had drawn attention to the destitute condition of Mrs. Heffner, Marshal Payne solicited contributions for the relief of the poor woman, and his appeal was readily responded to. She was amply furnished with food and other necessities for the time being, and we learn that an application has been made to the Board of Supervisors to grant her a monthly allowance. The charity would be well bestowed.
The arrangements for the benefit entertainment mentioned last week have all been made. It will take place at Kroeger's Hall on the 16th inst. Among those who have volunteered their services are Mrs. Rice, Mrs. Lawrence, Mrs. Lynill, Mrs. Lewis, Miss Kuchel, Messrs. Rice, Hartung, McKinnie and Ferguson. For full particulars see small bills.
The fee bill, which went into effect on the 1st of March, appears to be working very satisfactorily. The receipts of the County Clerk's office during March were $1,291.25 and the expenses, $531.25. The receipts of the Recorder's office for the same period were $1,093.50 and the expenses $475.
Mr. Hippolyte Cahen returned from San Francisco on Wednesday. He will unpack a fine lot of new goods next week.

11.16 inches. Crops are now assured,

Cathartic Pills
Combine the choiceest cathartic principles in medicine, in proportions accurately adjusted to secure activity, certainty, and uniformity of effect. They are, the result of years of careful study and practical experiment, and are the most effectual remedy yet discovered for diseases caused by derangement of the stomach, liver, and bowels, which require prompt and effectual treatment. Ayer's Pills are specially applicable to this class of diseases. They act directly on the digestive and assimilative processes, and restore regular healthy action. Their extensive use by physicians in their practice, and by all civilized nations, is one of the many proofs of their value as a safe, sure, and perfectly reliable purgative medicine. Being compounded of the concentrated virtues of purely vegetable substances, they are positively free from calomel or any injurious properties, and can be administered to children with perfect safety.
Ayer's Pills are an effectual cure for Constipation or Costiveness, Indigestion, Dyspepsia, Loss of Appetite, Foul Stomach and Breath, Dizziness, Headache, Loss of Memory, Numbness, Billiousness, Jaundice, Rheumatism, Eruptions and Skin Diseases, Dropsy, Tumors, Worms, Neuralgia, Colic, Gripes, Diarrhea, Dysentery, Gout, Piles, Disorders of the Liver, and all other diseases resulting from a disordered state of the digestive apparatus.
As a Dinner Pill they have no equal.
While gentle in their action, these Pills are the most thorough and searching cathartic that can be employed, and never give pain unless the bowels are inflamed, and then their influence is healing. They stimulate the appetite and digestive organs; they operate to purify and enrich the blood, and impart renewed health and vigor to the whole system.
