Mr. A. Guy Smith has, as in preceding years, sown several varieties of wheat for experimental purposes. He has sown altogether this year seven acres, and has taken extra care in preparing the soil so as to give the grain every chance to assert itself. The varieties of wheat sown are the Scotch Fife, Allerton's, Payne's Delance, Golden Drop and Hallet's Genealogical. Some of these varieties were sown last year and did very well, notably the Scotch Fife. Mr. Smith obtained the Fife seed from the Department of Agriculture, and he and others were appointed in its appearance. But from this seed the product last year was of a very superior quality, being large and white, whereas the seed as it came from the Department was small and dark. Mr. Smith is also experimenting with Surprise and Hulless oats, and the now famous Cuzco corn.
Now that our memory has been refreshed, we remember that the flour corn spoken of in these columns a couple of weeks ago was successfully grown here last year by Miles Bros., and that a specimen which they sent to the Horticultural Fair commanded a special premium. It is a very valuable grain and farmers should pay some attention to its cultivation.
The small lot of wheat received from Minnesota by Mr. B. F. Seibert, and which was thought to be Challenge Australian, is now reported by the sender to be Scotch Fife wheat. It no more resembles that variety than a yam does a sweet potato. The editor has arranged to procure in time for planting next season a bag of Scotch Fife wheat, direct from the district in Scotland where it is grown, so that there can be no doubt as to its genuineness. We are told that the Scotch Fife sent out by the Agricultural Department was procured in Canada.
In replanting part of his old vineyard, as heretofore noted in these columns, Mr. Reiser has adopted a plan with his cuttings which commends itself to our notice. In digging up the old vines he found that the greatest number of roots were within a few inches of the surface of the ground. This was due in great part to the system of irrigation as heretofore practised, and the evil effect of the roots being so near the surface were painfully apparent whenever there happened to be a scarcity of water for a few weeks during the hot summer months. To prevent the forming of these surface roots, Mr. Reiser prepared his cuttings in this way: He put the cuttings in the ground to a depth of 12 inches, leaving about three inches above the surface. The two or three eyes nearest the surface he cut out, so that they would not send out roots, the result being that the roots which would form would be from the eyes at that part of the cuttings farthest from the surface. It follows that if no irrigation is practised these roots will penetrate down towards moisture instead of coming to the surface, thus insuring a healthier growth and making the vine more able to withstand the summer drouther.

Many vineyardists here are making preparations to combat the frosts should any occur in the dreaded month of April. Herefore, in a wet season like the present, no frosts have occurred of sufficient severity to hurt the grape vines. It has only been in dry years that damage was done, but the proverbial fickleness of California seasons has taught our people to expect any kind of weather at any time. Many of them have saved their cuttings from their vines and made piles at stated distances, covering the cuttings with brea, which, as is well known, makes a dense, heavy smoke which on frosty mornings will cling to the earth, just where it is wanted. This plan is annually pursued not only in Europe but in the Eastern States of our own country as well, dampened straw being the material used. When we consider the great damage which a heavy frost does to a budding vineyard, it is a matter of wonder that precautionary measures are only being taken at this late day.
The second annual citrus fair will be held at Riverside on the 24th and 25th of February. Premiums to the amount of $146 will be given on oranges, lemons, limes, raisins, dried figs, olives and pickles. It is proposed to appoint a committee to examine all oranges sent from Los Angeles county, and reject any that seem likely to introduce the red scale into Riverside. It is claimed that that pest has not yet made its appearance in San Bernardino county.
The Chotteau Scheme, as the proposed treaty with France is called, received a decided set back in Congress the other day. By a vote of 175 to 62, that body adopted Kellogg's resolution declaring it a violation of the Federal Constitution for the President to negotiate a treaty with any foreign power fixing the rate of duty or tariff on any article of foreign import. The passage of this resolution is regarded as fatal to Chotteau's project, and viniculturists have cause to rejoice.
In the Illustrated History of Los Angeles County published by Thompson & West will appear a complete political record, giving the result of the various votes to date—also a roster, giving the names of the various officers who have held offices for both county and city from the first to the present.

A Human Marvel!
Well named in connection with the seven Historical Wonders.
MISS MILLIE CHRISTINE
The Pyramids first, which in Egypt are reared;
En Babylon's Gardens and Ram-parts appeared;
Next Mausola's Tomb of affection and guilt.
Which the fane Diana in Ephesus built;
The Colossus of Rhodes, made in brass for the sun,
And Jupiter's Statue, by Phidias done.
Some the Tower of Pharos place next we are told.
Some the Palace of Cyrus, cemented with gold.
Last but not least—is Miss Millie Christine,
The Two-headed Nightingale, alive to be seen.
Human Being since the Creation.

She has two perfect heads and Shoulders Which blend into one body and form to all intents and purposes but one Person.
She has four perfect legs and feet; she can walk on two or four, just as she pleases. She feels no pain whatever, and has full control of all her faculties, both mental and physical. She has no cause to regret her being so noted a person.
Things You Like To Know:
Above the point of union, which takes place just below the shoulder blade, the sense of feeling is separate and distinct in each; below it is common. For instance, if one of the four shoes on her four feet should cramp or pinch the foot, the pain or unpleasantness would be experienced by both. Both feel hunger and thirst simultaneously, and both partake of food at one and the same time, although if only one did so it would sustain life, as there is but one circulation of blood; although there would be a feeling of hunger in the stomach of the other until after digestion had taken place and the system and blood nourished from the other eating. Both sleep and awake at the same time, although one could be awake while the other was asleep. Should one be awake and desire to change her position in bed, she turns on her face and rolls her sister over without disturbing her. Oftentimes after awakening both heads relate the same dream. All the ills of the flesh are not necessarily theirs in common. One may have a slight cold or headache, and the other be free from it, but any disease of the blood both suffer simultaneously.
At the termination of each performance "Miss Millie Christine" will exhibit to the audience that portion of her body where the two blend into one. This is done without any infringement of modesty.
MISS MILLIE CHRISTINE possesses a splendid education and is able to converse with two persons at the same time on different subjects, in different languages, as both heads speak German, French, Italian and English. She is a splendid vocalist, one voice a contralto and the other a soprano. She is accompanied by
THE MIDGETS.
Well known to fame in the Old World as BARON LITTLEFINGER
