WEEKLY GAZETTE FRIDAY...OCTOBER 17, 1879 The Gazette goes to press every Friday afternoon and is delivered to subscribers on the following morning. All communications must reach this office on Thursday night as latest, in order to insure publication on the day following. Advertisements received up to noon on Fridays. Kleinigkeiten. —The Gazette enters upon its tenth volume to-day. —Jacob Schlesinger's store at Pomona was destroyed by fire on last Friday morning. Loss, $0,000; insured for $6,000. —The corn crop of Downey will be shortened about one-fourth, owing to a small insect which settles upon the "shoot" and extracts its juices. —Col. John O. Wheeler has received the appointment of Deputy Clerk of the Supreme Court. The appointment was made by the Clerk elect, Frank W. Gross. —The Board of Supervisors have appointed D. K. Williams road overseer of Anaheim road district, vice E. W. Champlin, resigned. —Mr. H. Werder has succeeded in making a fine quality of brandy from honey. It is possible that the surplus honey could be sold to the distillers at a fairly remunerative price. —The Farmera' and Workingmen's Party in Los Angeles are girding up their loins preparatory to the struggle for municipal offices. The election takes place on the first Monday in December. Those who intend going to the Fair should try to take advantage of the reduced rates on the excursion train which runs on Friday. The tickets are good for two days, and a saving of one dollar can be made. —The storm of Sunday night was preceded by a brilliant meteor which flashed across the sky about 9 o'clock. The heavens were illuminated with an unearthly brilliancy for a few moments. AQUEOUS ANTI-PAT. The Wonderful Effect that it had on Mr. Garcia. Since the last issue of the Gazette, the Editor has visited the spring, the remarkable waters of which were described last week. The spring is easy to find, being directly on the new San Bernardino road. It is on ground owned by Mr. Garcia, and that gentleman, together with Mrs. Garcia and their innumerable progeny, have for a long time used the precious water in the most rockless manner imaginable, totally oblivious of its valuable properties. Ent Mr. Garcia has had his weather eye opened by the frequent visits of obese and inquisitive angels, and it now requires a douzer of some value to obtain permission to cart off a barrel or so of the fluid. Mr. Garcia, with gestures expressive and language redundant, told us what he knew about it. He had a brother who some time ago came to live with him. The brother was of paunch immense. As we sat in the buggy Mr. Garcia took the lines from our hand and showed us therewith the size of the belt which was required to engirdle the Garcia abdomen. Falstaff must have been as a billiard one in comparison with this portly Californian. But soon after his arrival at his brother's house, the gordo Garcia began to fall off in flesh perceptibly. To use a nautical expression, it was necessary to "take in the slack" of his belt almost daily, and now his proportions are such as to make it a matter if no difficulty to dance to the laxivicious pleasings of a late when he is terpischorially disposed. It was he who drew Major Reynolds' attention to the spring, as related in our article last week. The Literary Union. The Anaheim Literary Union convened at the usual time and place. A good audience was in attendance. After the reading of the minutes, Miss Carrie Seibert favored the Society with a song. Mrs. Parker declared an original poem entitled "Two Epochs in my Life." Mr. Ernest Ferguson gave a select reading, "Memory's Beals." A new feature in the literary exercises of the Society was introduced — namely, answering queries from the query box. The questions The Literary Union. The Anaheim Literary Union convened at the usual time and place. A good audience was in attendance. After the reading of the minutes, Miss Carrie Seibert favored the Society with a song. Mrs. Parker declared an original poem entitled "Two Epochs in my Life." Mrs. Ernest Ferguson gave a select reading, "Memory's Beils." A new feature in the literary exercises of the Society was introduced — namely, answering queries from the query box. The questions ranged from the nonsensical to the philosophical, from the kind of feathers on Cupid's arrows to the cause of the twinkling of the stars. The Committee, Mr. E. A Saxton and Miss Ada des Granges, gave satisfactory answers to most of the queries. After recess, Mr. Grimshaw sang a solo, "Kind Words can Never Die." The Society's paper, the Leader, was read by the editor, Miss Mary Brier. This number was an excellent one. Miss Lydia Parker was chosen a member of the Society. The following was reported as the programme for next evening's meeting: Instrumental music; essay; Wm. Fish; declamation; Otto des Granges; music; Old-fashioned singing to a new fashioned tune; by Mrs. Parker; select reading, J. M. Guinn; answering queries by the committee; declamation; C. S. Miles; select reading, Miss Brier; recess; music; declamation; Rev. E. Halliday; select reading, E. A. Saxton; declamation; Charles Higgins recitation; Miss Mary Kroamer; music. TARC T Mr. W. E. Taylor came down from Santiago Canyon on Wednesday. He reports a fine prospect at the Santiago Co.'s mine. The tunnel is now in 75 feet, and he thinks that another 15 feet will show up the third ledge, which is expected to far exceed in size and richness the two already opened. Mr. Taylor brought down a splendid specimen of ore which has been sent to the Fair. It was a piece of pure galena, weighing thirty-four pounds. The rain of Tuesday of last week developed a trait of Chinese character which one would scarcely expect. A vineyardist who had a large gang of Chinamen at work picking grapes was somewhat astonished at the celerity with which they sought shelter when the rain began, and still more astonished after the sun had asserted his supremacy to meet with a decided refusal on the part of the Chinamen to return to the vineyard. "Leaves too muche wettee" they said in explanation. It would appear from this circumstance that they have an almost feline antipathy to water, and that even Chinamen have some notions in regard to personal comfort. A correspondent of the Rural Press writes that at the last meeting of the Los Angeles County Beekeepers' Association, the Commercial Bank made a proposition to handle the entire honey crop of this county in 1880. He says: "The bank proposes to receive honey at their house (not agreed as to whether said house will be in Los Angeles or Wilmington), grade, and put it up in form best suited for export by ocean or rail. Furthermore that they will label, truly, all honey handled by them as per grade. Europe is looked to as the market. Our beekeepers, so far as consulted, seem rather favorable to the proposition. One feature, however, is prominent in said proposition: the bank will have to enter into the business as merchants as well, if the business of handling the honey crop is undertaken, because of the adversity of so many of the beekeepers the present year. With some of us now, we only expect to get through with a few hives, and will be in need of the last cent that is in our meager supply in the year 1880, and it will therefore justify none of the parties to the agreement to open an account, but to sell on the spot." Mr. J. K. Tuffree has evidently inaugurated his real estate and commission agency just in the nick of time. Every sign points to a speedy influx of land seekers into this part of the State, and as this is the acknowledged garden spot of the county we cannot possibly fail to secure a large share of the new population. Mr. Tuffree has a large amount of improved and unimproved land for sale which intending purchasers should examine. Special attention is directed to the inducements he offers those who will agree to cultivate sugar beets or wheat the coming season. Read his advertisement. Considerable damage was done in Los Angeles by the rain of last Monday. The overflow from the ditches poured down Alameda street and under the immense storehouse of Lankershim & Van Nuys, (formerly the Commercial street depot). The weight of the 50,000 sacks of wheat stored in the warehouse caused it to settle to nearly the level of the street, and wrenched and twisted it out of all shape. The damage to the building is about $1500, and the damage to the wheat by water is unascertainable. Three boys charged with misdemeanor were found guilty in Justice Bailey's court yesterday and were sentenced to 15 days imprisonment in the county jail. They were taken to Los Angeles this morning by Constable Wartenberg. Their offence was indecent exposure, filthy and profane language, and assaulting a little girl with a stone. Announcement is made that the Greenbackers of this county will meet in Convention in Los Angeles on Thursday, Dec. 26th, to select a delegate to the Convention of the National Union Greenback Labor Party which meets in St. Louis, Mo., on January 8th, 1880, to nominate candidates for President and Vice-President of the United States. Work will be resumed on the S. P. R. R. in Arizona about the 1st of November. THE UNDERSIGNED HAVING OPENED A RULE Estate office in the Planters' Hotel, Anaheim, specifically suggests to those who contemplate the purchase of land that they will consult their own interest by calling at this agency and securing information regarding choice tracts of improved and unimproved land which have been placed in my hands for sale can show intending purchasers some of the fines traced of agricultural land in Southern California, and that specially draw attention to the fact that I only deal lands to which the title is unquestionably good. Don't despair of relief, for this benign specifie may cure you, even though professional aid fails. READ THE FOLLOWING: Dr. D. D. Wright, of Cincinnati, sends us the sub-leaved professional endorsement. "I have prescribed Hall's Balsam in a large number of cases, and always with success." He adds that "in one case a patient with every appearance of confirmed consumption, was restored to his usual health soon after commencing to take the Balsam." John Kuhn, of Ladayette, Ind., writes: "One year ago I was to all appearances in the last stages of consumption, and so low our doctor said I could not live 24 hours." Mr. Kuhn further states that "after taking nine bottles of Hall's Balsam he is now in perfect health, having und no other medication." The above brief extracts are taken from a MASS OF EVIDENCE, which has been accumulating during a period of 20 years, proving the efficacy of Hall's Balsam in all cases where the breathing organs are affected, and showing the estimation in which the remedy is held by the public and the medical profession.
