SUGAR BEETS.
Professor Gennert has arrived at Los Angeles, and during Fair week he will endeavor to enlist the farmers of the county into taking hold of the sugar beet industry. He is empowered by a San Francisco Company, now being organized, to pay $18 per ton for dried beets, delivered at convenient shipping points in Southern California, cash on delivery. But before the Company enters into any formal contract to pay the price stated, or any price, they require to be assured that at least 6,000 acres of beets will be planted this season. It is imperatively necessary, therefore, that those farmers who are willing to embark in the enterprise should communicate with Prof. Gennert, and let him know how many acres they will devote to beet raising.
Experiments heretofore made in this vicinity show that sugar beets can be dried in the open air and sun in 48 hours. These dried beets will keep an indelinite length of time, and can be run through the factory as convenience dictates. Four and one-half tons of green or fresh beets will make one ton of dried beets. Following is the contract which it is proposed shall be entered into by the grower.
CONTRACT FOR GROWING AND DELIVERING SUGAR BEETS.
I. of the Town of... County of... State of California, agree to plant and cultivate... acres Sugar Beets and deliver to the Beet Sugar Company, now organizing in San Francisco, the crop thereof in an air and sun-dried state, according to the annexed terms and conditions, at $18 per ton of two thousand pounds, to be paid tor in cash when delivered at convenient ship-
CUCAMONGA.
A Famous Vineyard—Its History, its Present Appearance and its Future.
A Gazette reporter accepted an invitation from Mr. B. Dreyfus the other day to accompany him on a visit to Cucamonga, the wines of which vineyard have been famous for the last two decades. It is probably the oldest vineyard of any extent in Southern California, and its reputation is due in a great measure to the fact that it has for many years been controlled by experienced vignerons, who placed the vinous product on the market in such a shape as to make it pleasing to the eye, and, consequently, salable. "Cucamonga Wine" was well known and in about as great demand in California ten or fifteen years ago as it is to-day.
Cucamonga is in San Bernardino county, 22 miles from the county seat, 40 miles from Los Angeles, 3 miles from Pomona and 32 miles from Anaheim. Its name is an Indian word signifying "Rocky Canyon," and the appropriateness of the nomenclature is palpably apparent to the traveler as he approaches the place. And here we would advise writers and others to freeze on to the orthography of the name as it is given in this article. No other word that we know of has been so tortured and twisted out of shape. This is perhaps excusable, for it is a word which presents the grandest opportunities for a display of lively fancy in spelling and pronunciation.
The originator of the vineyard was one Valdez, who fifty years ago planted about six acres in Mission vines. These venerable sary element. Adjoining the Association's land on the east is a tract of 20,000 acres owned by
THE KENDALE COMPANY,
Which has its headquarters in San Francisco. Those who are familiar with the picture drawn of the Eden which claimed the jolly Tapley and the misanthropic Chuzzlewit among its citizens will doubt the wisdom of selecting such a suspiciously seductive cognomen. But an inspection of the tract is evidence that the name is tolerably well deserved. That part of the tract which can be irrigated as fertile as could be wished, and the situation is certainly a desirable one.
THE TOWN
Of Cucamonga has two stores, blacksmith shop, stable, hotel and a number of houses (some unoccupied) belonging to the Association. There is a post office, replenished daily by the train from Los Angeles, which stops at a station distant about two and a half miles. There is also a school house which accommodates fifteen pupils. The hotel is kept by a whom Anaheimer, Vicente Fernandez, and his handsome and accomplished daughters assist in dispensing good cheer to the weary traveler. Cucamonga is a pleasant place to pass a day or two, and is made especially pleasant to Anaheimers by the presence of Mr. and Mrs. Westphal, who are always ready to greet their townspeople with warmth.

CONTRACT FOR GROWING AND DELIVERING SUGAR BEETS.
I... of the Town of...
County of... State of California, agree to plant and cultivate... acres Sugar Beets and deliver to the Beet Sugar Company, now organizing in San Francisco, the crop thereof in an air and sun-dried state, according to the annexed terms and conditions, at $18 per ton of two thousand pounds, to be paid for in cash when delivered at convenient shipping points during the months of July, August, September, October and November, 1880.
Conditions and Terms under which the Beets have to be raised and delivered: The general instructions given from time to time by the Company have to be observed by the parties as to planting and cultivation. The Company furnishes the seed at 20 cents per lb., for which the farmer gives his obligation and for which he has to pay in beets when the crop is matured. The Company furnishes the root cutters, seed-drill and cultivator, one complete set for every 500 acres, to be used by the farmers in rotation, under direction of the Company. No beets planted on alkali land will be accepted. The beets must not contain more than 10 per cent. of moisture. The Company will furnish every facility and advice in their power to the farmers from time to time. The Company will accept the beets as fast as they can be shipped, and pay $18 per ton, cash on delivery.

If those of our readers who desire to plant beets but who have not an opportunity of conferring with Prof. Genuert, will call at the Gazette office, we will acquaint the Professor with their names and the acreage they are willing to plant.
EVIDENCE OF IT.
It is to be hoped that the colonies, which rumor says are forming in various parts of the States for emigration to Southern California, will keep their organizations intact and settle upon some of the choice tracts of land which abound here. If one will think for a moment of the advantages which a new settler derives from being associated with and receiving the encouragement and assistance of his old friends and neighbors, he will be forced to admit that it is decidedly the best way to settle in this country. There are several colonies in this part of the State which could be cited in support of this proposition, but we will direct attention only to Anaheim, the pioneer colony, the history of which, we think, furnishes indubitable proof of the advantages of the colony system.
It should be borne in mind that when Anaheim was first established, (1859) the surrounding country was literally a wilderness. Obstacles had to be encountered and overcome which would not now present themselves. The colonists had nothing to guide them towards success but their own common sense and strong arms. There was no one who could advise them; they were left to work out their own salvation as best convenience dictates. Four and one-half tons of green or fresh beets will make one ton of dried beets. It should be borne in mind that when Anaheim was first established (1859) the surrounding country was literally a wilderness. Obstacles had to be encountered and overcome which would not now present themselves. The colonists had nothing to guide them towards success but their own common sense and strong arms. There was no one who could advise them; they were left to work out their own salvation as best they could. And it should be further remembered that not one of them were experts at grape growing or wine making. Almost every trade and profession was represented, but there was a profound ignorance of practical agriculture or horticulture. And yet with all these drawbacks to contend with, the colony flourished and prospered and the colonists did make, and are now making money. We repeat that the colony of Anaheim is the very best evidence that can be offered that the system is a good one to pursue. If the colonists of 1859 prospered, why not the colonists of 1879? Suppose a colony of farmers should come here from the East, buy a thousand or two thousand acres adjoining Anaheim, what is to prevent them from speedily making picturesque, comfortable homes and reaping pecuniary reward as well?
It is yet time to send forward exhibits to the Fair. It is probable that Anaheim will make a fair exhibit, but we are afraid that the great industry of the place will not be represented as it should be. Vineyardists should forward each a few bottles of wine today or on Monday, so that the wine display will be creditable to Anaheim. Address all packages to W. E. Morford, Superintendent.

General Bidwell of the Chico ranch has for some years past been growing a variety of muskmelon which has attracted much attention. Single specimens have been sold at $1 apiece. Gen. Bidwell writes to the Bulletin, giving some items with reference to this melon. It is called the "Casaba." The Department of Agriculture procured seed from Lenia, in 1869, at a cost of $1 20 per pound in gold. A few seeds were sent to the General, and though he has been extremely liberal in disseminating the seeds, but it is by no means known so well as its rare merite deserve. When pure it is the best muskmelon raised and is peculiarly well adapted to the climate of the Sacramento Valley. It is very large with extremely thick flesh and few seeds.

From every section of our country comes the cheering intelligence of better times. The abundant harvest, with a corresponding demand from foreign countries for all the surplus products of our soil, together with a ready market for our manufactures, has turned the balance of trade largely in our favor. Scarcely a steamer from Europe but brings a shipment of gold for the purchase of breadstuffs, agricultural implements, beef, pork, cotton, &c., which has the effect of stimulating every branch of productive industry, giving employment to the honest laborer, and rendering homes heretofore saddened by poverty and want, cheerful and happy. All our leading manufacturers that have for years been suspended or running on short time, are now in active operation, creating a demand for skilled artisans and mechanics that is already inducing large numbers of this class to emigrate from the manufacturing districts of England and the Continent to our shores, in the hope of bettering their impoverished condition and laying the foundations of wealth, denied them in the overcrowded districts of the old world. An impetus is also given to general emigration by the cheering prospect which our country presents. Large colonies of emigrants in England, France and Germany are forming and sending out their agents to inspect our country, select locations etc., preparatory to an early emigration hither. In view of this condition of things, it is a matter of importance that our local papers make a special effort to gather and disseminate full and accurate information of their respective localities for the benefit of those seeking homes among us. California has millions of acres of virgin soil that only needs the hand endeavors to gain an education. The Lyceum meets Thursday evening, Oct. 16th.
Little Lake Social and Literary Club met on Saturday, the 11th inst. at 7:30 p.m. The exercises were varied and well rendered. Mrs. Roques, from Anaheim, gave a reading in excellent style which was appreciated to the utmost by all present. Mrs. Moore from Los Nietos, a sister of Mrs. Roques, recited "Curfew shall not Ring To-night" in unsurpassed style. The utmost good order and harmony prevailed and all departed with pleasant thoughts of having enjoyed themselves throughout the evening.
Mr. Lake Houghton was thrown from a colk, and found insensible, apparently having struck upon his head, but is now well again. The same erratic cold kicked Loney Houghton on the wrist inflicting a painful bruise.

The sight of the water in the ditches the other morning reminded Aquarius that he had a duty to perform, so he has seized the watering pot and essayed a sprinkle, but standing so long in inutility had suffered the aquous element to evaporate, so the shower was very slight, whereupon Monsieur Aquarius hastened to headwaters, filled his vacitious utensil and proceeded to saturate impartially all the surface of our gardens far and near, not even overlooking the hay in his zeal. Actually searched out a tiny crack made by Old Sol in the wooden canopy overhead and launched a drop with such excellent aim that Willmette's eyelid caught the same with great precision, causing an immediate uprising in arms to call for an account of the same.

The Ohio Election.
Toledo, Oct. 15.—The Republican victory is so complete that it surprises even the Republicans and overwhelms the Democrate. At the Democratic Committee rooms there is little figuring, everybody being sure. The Committee say they have no news; they concede the election of the Republican State ticket by a handsome majority, and allow them a working majority in the House of Representatives, but still claim to have one or two majority in the Senate.
The Iowa Election.
Den Moines, Oct. 15.—All the later returns increase the Republican majority. The State Register now puts the Republican majority on the State ticket at 30,000 over all other parties and extremely likely to be 35,000. The Republican majority in the Legislature on joint ballot will be larger than in the last and beat the Republican gain over two years ago, 33,000.
New York, October 15.—It is stated that the imports of California wine to this port by sea since the beginning of the year amount to 1,156,712 gallons, and of brandy,114,717.

But don't smile more than you are obliged to, if you have a mouthful of discolored teeth. If such is the case procure and use at least once every day, delightful SOZODONT, which will remove the unbecoming spots and specks that disfigure your teeth; render them pearly white, make the gums hard and rosy, and impart fragrance to your breath. While at the Puente ranch I boarded at the Hotel de Heigatte, so named by the boys working for the contractor of the building. The table was filled with the delicacies of the season. The principle part of the bill of fare for breakfast was coffee, bread, pork and beans, and for lunch beans, pork, bread and coffee, so you see the change of diet was excellent, and the most delicate constitution would enjoy George's nice pastry cooking.
And now, Mr. Editor, I will come down to the sentimental part of my trip. It was when I boarded the cars homeward bound. There is no ticket agent at the Puente depot so when Conductor Sippy came to me for my fare I handed him 50 cents, he put it in his pocket and passed on. Then I was not posted exactly what the fare was to Savannah, but on inquiry of the agent at Savannah I found the fare was only 40 cents, so your readers will see that the conductor took 10 cents from me; it is a small amount, but I want the railroad officials to know for their benefit as well as the traveling public to look out for such fellows.
A French sheep herder on the Puente ranch last Friday fatally shot a Mexican. No particulars as to the fracas.
Mr. S. Bennett received about 200 head of fat hogs from near Spadra this week.
Last Friday our school exhibition came off. The scholars did honor to our able teacher, Mr. Soward, in the nice style and delivery of their pieces before a number spectators.
