The Gazette sends its congratulations to Sheriff Mitchell and his bride, and wishes them a long and happy life.
Gen. Stoneman will exhibit at the Horticultural Fair a quantity of syrup made from Mission grape.
In the case of Hammond vs the Black Star Coal Co., which came up on Wednesday, the damarger was overruled. Five days to answer.
Gen. Grant has written to the Committee stating that owing to other engagements it will be impossible for him to visit Southern California.
An assessment of fifty cents per share has been levied by the Anaheim Water Company, to become delinquent on the 1st day of November.
The Directors of the Horticultural Society have employed A.N. Hamilton to travel through the county to solicit exhibits for the Society's Fair.
Potts, the Pluvial Prophet, says that it will rain about the 20th of the present month and that the regular winter rains will commence about November 20th.
At the meeting of the Anaheim Water Company on last Saturday, Mr. John Fischer resigned his positions as Secretary and Trustee, and Mr. E. Schubert was elected to fill the vacancies.
The Literary Union.
The Anaheim Literary Union convened at the Presbyterian church Friday evening, Sept. 26. Called to order by the President, J. M. Guinn. The regular Secretary being absent, Mr. C. S. Miles was appointed Secretary pro tem. The first literary exercise of the evening was a select reading by Miss Fannie Higgitt. Mr. Chas. S. Miles gave a declaration, a translation from Richter. The piece was well rendered by the speaker and well received by the audience. Miss Sadie Crowther recited Southey's poem, "The Incacape Rock." Her tone was clear and loud, her inflections correct and her emphasis rightly placed. Her recitation was listened to with pleasure and loudly applauded at the close. After recess, Mr. Grimshaw favored the audience with a song: Miss Mary Prier read the Society's paper, the Leader. This was one of the best numbers presented. The contributions varied from the grave to the gay. Many of the articles that appear in the Leader would do honor to the pages of a more pretentious periodical. The article "Old Saws Reset," was decidedly witty. The author poked fun at the "early bird" of the old proverb in a way that that fowl would despise, and rocked "glass houses" in a way that would astonish their occupants. Miss Ella Mitchell and Miss Anna Fischer gave a very fine rendering of the song "Let the Dead and the Beautiful Rest." The next meeting of the Society will be held Friday evening Oct. 3d. The following programme will be presented: Declamations by Messrs. C. W. Campbell and C. H. Zeyn; recitation by Miss Laura Campbell; reading by Miss des Granges; after which the following local question will be discussed: Resolved That a productive country with a poor climate is preferable to a healthy climate but uncertain agricultural resources. Affirmative, Messrs. Ferguson, Grimshaw and Saxton; negative, Messrs. Henderson, Miles and Guinn.
The following named gentlemen have been chosen members of the County Central Committee of the Farmers' and Workingmen's Party: Edward Evey, D. J. Sorenson, Anaheim; Henry Roberts, Azusa; I. Kinley, Cienegar; George Sebastian, Cahuenga; E. M. Wardell, Duarte; F. Buchard, Fountain Valley; J. G. Rice, Garden Grove; John Condra, Los Nietos; J. D. Machado, La Ballona; N. Levering, Monte Vista; Jno Dolland, Norwalk; E. W. Squires, Orange; J. H. Baker Pasadena; Thomas Mercer.

We hope that whenever our friends have any printing to do they will bring it to the Gazette office. We will do all kinds of printing as cheap as any office in the county and do it as well.
Mr. John Fischer and family left on Wednesday for Los Angeles, where they will take up their residence for a time. We hope they will find it to their interest to return here again at some future time.
In the Probate Court on Saturday the following proceeding was had: Estate of John Wakefield, deceased—Contest for letters of administration between Allen Barr and C. C. Lamb; continued to Oct. 8, at 10 A.M.
Attention is directed to the revised advertisement of the Horticultural Fair. The managers are leaving nothing undone to make the affair a success, and the exhibit of Southern California products and industries promises to exceed that of last year.
The rates of the Western Union Telegraph Company for messages going east by Utah have been reduced to $2 for ten words, and 14 cents for each additional word. The rate on a ten-word message has heretofore been $250.
The Supreme Court at San Francisco on Wednesday reversed the decision of Judge Sepulveda in the cases of O'Conner vs Good, same vs Hazard and same vs Addis. These are the Rosecranz land cases and have been pending in the Supreme Court for about a year.
The lady friends of St. Michael's Mission are cordially invited to meet at Mrs. G. H. Kellogg's house on next Tuesday at 2 P.M. for the purpose of discussing ways and means of getting up some kind of acceptable entertainment in behalf of the church.
E. N. McDonald, Jotham Bixby and Thomas B. Hays, all residents of Wilmington, have published a notice that at the meeting of the Board of Supervisors in November they will apply for authority to construct a wharf on the Palos Verdes Rancho, Old San Pedro.
Messrs Goodman & Rimpau, whose fine stock of drygoods is not surpassed by any firm in the county, are selling very low in order to make way for their winter stock. They have a very excellent assortment of everything in their line and invite an inspection by the public. See advertisement.
The following named gentlemen have been chosen members of the County Central Committee of the Farmers' and Workingmen's Party: Edward Evey, D. J. Caruthers, Silver; Otto Schmidt, Santa Monica; S. L. Eddy, Tustin; Mark Golden, Vernon; T. B. Culter, Westminster; George Kirsch, Wilmington. The first meeting of the Committee will be held in Downey Hall, Los Angeles, Saturday, Oct. 4th, at 10 A.M.
The Town Trustees met in regular session on Wednesday. A number of bills were referred to the Finance Committee and others were ordered paid. In the matter of fire hose it was found that the entire revenue of the town would be needed to pay off the indebtedness already incurred in laying the water pipe etc., and that the Fire Department must themselves furnish the hose. It is understood that the Department has $200 in the treasury available for that purpose, Temporary water rates were fixed, and those desiring to make connection with the main pipe will be informed as to the rate upon application to Mr. Seibert.
We acknowledge all from Mr. Henry Wayman, of Westminster. In a recent trip through the mountains and to the Hot Springs Mr. Wayman saw a great number of deer, and was informed that bears were becoming every day more troublesome and plentiful. It seems that it is "hard times" even with bears. The feel is so scarce high up in the mountains that they are fored to come down into the canyons and raid upon the bees kept there.
A number of young friends of Miss Mary Hortesman besieged the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Korn on Thursday evening and took the place by storm. The "surprise" was a genuine one and seemed from that fact to be all the more enjoyable. The party were royally entertained and the evening passed as pleasantly as could be wished.
Mr. J. K. Tuffree has opened a real estate office in the Planters' Hotel. When not otherwise engaged he will be found at his office during business hours, and in his absence visitors and patrons will be received by Mr. John Hanna. The signs are that real estate will be in demand in the near future.
B. W. Lee has been ordered to take charge of the Bonded Warehouse in Los Angeles, relieving the present incumbent, Mr. Savage.

On the way to school on Wednesday morning, Master Willie Hilmer stopped to play on the vacant lot next to Plato's store and while amusing himself fell on a piece of board from which two nails protruded. They entered his forehead and check, inflicting painful wounds.
Messrs Edward and David Evey have shipped two hundred and sixty-six centals of Odessa wheat to San Francisco and seventy-five centals to Watsonville during the past two weeks. There is a great demand for this article for seed. Several tons have been shipped to Ventura and Sacramento counties, and we presume there is very little of it left in the market here.
"Give us facts!" cry the Gradgrinds of the East when asking for information concerning this county. We have this week a weighty fact to hurl at them to prove the climatic excellence of our section. Less than two months ago the W. U. Telegraph operator came to Anaheim, a frail youth o twenty-five or thereabouts and weighing only 160 pounds. To-day he is nearly two months older and weighs 196 pounds — a clear gain of about two months and thirty-six pounds within the last sixty days.
The Los Angeles Commercial says: Another decision of one of the famous Selby cases on the land known as the Rosecrans Traet has just been made by the Secretary of the Interior. The case was that of Rufus McCreery vs. the State of California, and was decided in favor of McCreery, confirming his title to 160 acres of land. We trust that the balance of these cases may soon be determined, and all these disputes about title put to rest and forever.

Employment for Ladies.
The Queen City Suspender Company, of Cincinnati, are now manufacturing and introducing their new Stocking Supporters for ladies and children and their unequalled Skirt Suspenders for ladies. None should be without them; our leading physicians recommend them, and are loud in their praise. This manufacturing establishment is managed by ladies who have made the wants of ladies and children & study, and they ask us to refer them to some reliable and energetic lady to introduce them in this county, and we certainly think that an earnest solicitation in every household would meet with a really response, and that a determined woman could make a handsome salary and have the exclusive agency for this county. We advise some lady who is irrigated employment to send a postal card to the company, with her name and address, and mention this paper. Address Mrs. B. C. Smith, Manager, 214 Elm Street, Cincinnati, Ohio.
