At eight o'clock the other morning a wife followed her husband down to the gate as he was starting for down town, and kindly said to him: "William, you know how sadly I need a blue hunting dress." "Yes, dear," he remarked, "but you know how hard up I am. As soon as I can see my way clear you shall have the dress, and a new hat to boot. He patient, be good, and your reward shall be great." Forty minutes after that he emerged from a restaurant with a big basket and a fish pole, bound up the river. In the basket was a chicken, pickles, cake, frut, pie and a bottle of liquid of a rich color, and he was just lighting a twenty cent cigar when his wife came along. "What! you here?" he exclaimed. "Yes, I was going to market. Where are you going?—what's in that basket?" "I was going to carry this fish-pole around to a friend," he modestly answered. "And that basket?" "This basket—well, I was going to take it to the Orphan Asylum as a present to the children. It is a donation from six leading citizens." "William, I don't believe it!" "Sh! Don't talk so loud!" "William, I shall talk louder yet!" she exclaimed. "I'll bet that you are going fishing!" "Mary, have I ever deceived you?" he plaintively asked. "I never have. As proof of my sincerity, you can take this basket to the asylum yourself." "And I'll do it!" she promptly replied, as she relieved him of it. "Mary, hadn't you—" "No, sir, I hadn't. You'd better hurry up with that fish-pole, as the man may want it, and be careful how you stand around in the hot sun." She left him there. He watched her take the car for home, and then he returned the fish-pole and crossed the street and said to an acquaintance: "Tom, I'm suffering with neuralgia, and the sorrow is off till next week. Behold the value of advertising! The sleeve-button belonging to our friend Reiser, advertised as having been lost last Wednesday, was found several hours before the paper went to press! Hon. A.W.Poole, U.S.Marshal, arrived overland Tuesday, and proceeded to San Juan Capistrano, to place in possession the claimants of the church property as against Don Juan Foster.-Commercial. We hear a rumor that J.D.Dunlap's appointment as Deputy U.S.Marshal has been recalled by Marshal Poole, and that no successor will be appointed. The cause of the removal of Mr.Dunlap was the delay in bringing Mr.E.J.Baldwin into the Commissioner's Court.Complaint was made by Highw. If Mr.Dunlap is not reinstated, New York, August 14.-A Herald Washington correspondent states that a Cabinet officer apprehends trouble growing out of the Mormon question It appears as if the Government will have to put its foot down with emphasis There are six companies of the Fourteenth Infantry at Fort Douglas, and more could be readily concentrated there. The tenor of dispatches from Utah shows an irritated condition of the people, and now that the intentions of the Mormon people are known, they are not calculated to soothe the feelings of the Mormon elders. Speaking of Evarts's letter on polygamy, the Tribune says:It is in effect a friendly reminder that the comity of nations has been violated But now that it has been sent, more vigorous action is justified, and Mormon missionaries who bring back to our shores these deluded converts can be arrested at our ports and returned with their victims as felons. The directness and justice of this peculiar mode of procedure are evident from the fact that the polygamists of Utah are mostly foreigners.Five years ago the population of Salt Lake contained literally not a single American convert They were English, Scotch,Norwegian and Dane, with their children born in this country, reared and educated to the faith and practices of this most degrading of all social conditions It is hardly fair that America should bear the obloquy and moral degradation from this plague-spot of brutality and vice, which of right belongs to other nations Whenever the influx of foreign bigamists is checked, the Government can then deal successfully with those at home. New York, August 19.-A Tribune Salt Lake correspondent says:Old residents of Salt Lake say that at no time since the com- —Hon. A. W. Poole, U. S. Marshal, arrived overland Tuesday, and proceeded to San Juan Capistrano, to place in possession the claimants of the church property against Don Juan Foster. —Commercial. —We hear a rumor that J. D. Dunlap's appointment as Deputy U. S. Marshal has been recalled by Marshal Poole, and that no successor will be appointed. The cause of the removal of Mr. Dunlap was the delay in bringing Mr. E. J. Baldwin into the Commissioner's Court. Complaint was made by Higby. If Mr. Dunlap is not reinstated, this section of the State is certainly entitled to have a successor appointed. The practical working of the opposite course would probably be a special appointment every time a Deputy is needed. —Express. —Downey Courier: Thursday a number of the farmers of this valley assembled at McGarvin's hall, in this place, to discuss and perfect a plan to better their condition—to realize remunerative prices for their products. It is proposed, as we understand it, to organize an association, with permanent officers to conduct its affairs; that a prominent and reliable San Francisco commission house be selected, and all shipments made direct to it, the producers fixing the price at which they can afford to sell. If stored, and the farmer desires to raise money upon his grain until sold, the commission merchant presents the warehouse receipt at the bank, and obtains the sum at a low rate. It is high time the farmer's organized for their own protection. The plan outlined above was received with much favor by the farmers present, and another meeting appointed for next Saturday, the 30th, when it is hoped the farmers of the valley will rally in force. MEMPHIS, Aug. 21.—The Howard Association expenses are about $1,000 daily, and increasing. They have exhausted $20,000 balance in the treasury and are without means, unless the North responds liberally as last year. Various secret organizations, and notably the Knights of Honor, are working nobly. The various relief societies are supplanting the Christian churches here during the present crisis. The ministers for the most part have fled, leaving their flocks to the savages of the fever. The Pope has received a letter postmarked "Baltimore" warning him that a conspiracy is on foot to poison him. There was a kind of a tempest in a teapot at Los Angeles on Saturday. The hostile meeting between the editors there is calculated to dissipate all those notions that life in that favored region is nothing but a round of luxury, surfeited by the pleasant breath and balmy odors of orange groves. An equable climate should produce an equanimity of temper. But if such exciting scenes as those of Saturday are to be of frequent occurrence, why, Los Angeles as a sanitarium has gone in. If the climate is of such an exhilarating character, that not only does a man lose control of his temper but his ability to sheet within an area of ninety degrees, what is the use of Los Angeles journals continually puffing their delicious climate, squashes and surroundings? About the whole of Saturday's business, except to those unfortunate who came within range of the balligent's pistola, there is nothing but a spice of comedy and farce—S. F. Bulletin. READ THE FOLLOWING: Dr. D. D. Wright, of Cindurati, sends us the subjoined professional endorsement: "I have prescribed Hall’s balsam in a large number of cases, and always with success." John Kuhn, of Lafayette, Ind., writes: "One year ago I was to all appearances in the last stages of consumption, and got so low our doctor said I could not live 26 hours."
