Every ensuing day shows up with increased effect the stupendous folly, and hardly less stupendous wickedness of constructing the bridge between New York city and Brooklyn. In passing it, every ship of any respectable tonnage is obliged to strike all above topmasts, which is attended with considerable cost, while real estate on both sides of the East River, above the bridge, has already suffered much depreciation. The benefits anticipated from the destruction of Hell Gate rocks—incurred at great expense for the express purpose of opening another safe and desirable ship canal through Long Island Sound—have been largely neutralized by this bridge obstruction whose pernicious effects are particularly felt during the winter season. Many a fine ship has finished her career on the south side of Long Island and the New Jersey shore, through being jammed by a Northeast snow storm into the angle made by the two, whereas they could have got in all right if the Hell Gate passage were in existence. Furthermore, the bridge has been so constructed that it will have to receive additional support by means of a central and substantial stay column erected in the centre of East River, half way between New York and Brooklyn. It is so long, and so exposed that without such support it would shortly sway and sling itself to pieces, besides, it is so situated that it is not likely to be much used except when the East River is blocked with ice, or the fogs are so thick as to seriously impede the regular ferries. Mr. C. H. Sweetman, of this city, informs us that he has about completed arrangements by which he will make his own roasting furnace of wrought iron for about the same expense as a cast furnace and much more durable. He claims that the main point in the Robertson process is the roasting of the ores, thus getting rid of the sulphur, antimony, arsenic and lead where the latter does not exceed over eight or ten percent. After the roasting, he says that most of even very refractory ores will amalgamate as well by dropping them while hot into cold water; as into the compound of cyanide of potassium, bluestone and salt; though there are some ores which are better cleaned by this compound. — Express. Itothes and heals the membrane of the lungs, infamed and poisoned by the disease, and remedies the night sweats and tightness across the chest, which accompany it. Consumption Is not an incurable malady. It is only necessary to have the right remedy, and HALL’S BALSAM is that remedy. Don’t despair of relief, for this benign specific may cure you, even though professional aid falls. READ THE FOLLOWING: Dr. D. D. Wright, of Cincinnati, sends us the subjoined professional endorsement: “I have prescribed Hall’s Balsam in a large number of cases, and always with success.” He adds that: “In one case a patient with every appearance of confirmed consumption, was respired to his usual health soon after commencing to take the Balsam.” John Kuhn, of Lafayette, Ind., writes: “One year ago I was to all appearances in the last stages of consumption, and got so low our doctor said I could not live 24 hours.” Mr. Kuhn further states that “after taking nine bottles of Hall’s Balsam he is now in perfect health, having used no other medicine.” The above brief extracts are taken from a MASS OF EVIDENCE which has been accumulating during a period of 20 years, proving the efficacy of Hall’s Balsam in all cases where the breathing organs are affected, and showing the estimation in which the remedy is held by the public and the medical profession.
