De Lesseps' Ship Canal Project.
New York, July 25th.-The Times has a long letter from Paris on the recent inter-oceanic canal project, in which it is predicted that the shares will be taken by Frenchmen in twenty-four hours when they are put on the market, because of confidence in Lesseps, he being a wealthy man already, and 74 years old. The writer thinks the canal will be an accomplished fact in ten years, and says Lesseps is astonished at the opposition manifested by the Americans when he showed his good will by offering to make General Grant the honorary President of the company.
New York, July 25th.-The Tribune, regarding Admiral Ammen's report, says that the Congress did not have the proper knowledge of the character of some of the most important routes which were talked about, and was told next to nothing at all about the San Blas route, which is the shortest, and may yet be found the best of all. FROM LAST SATURDAY'S SECOND EDITION.
Extra copies of the Weekly Gazette issued to-day, for sale at the office.
It is stated that E. J. Baldwin has purchased 20,000 acres of land adjoining the Santa Anita Rancho, in this county, and that he will shortly commence the erection of a $20,000 residence.
The Anaheim Gazette recommends a meeting of the Horticultural Society at Anaheim. The idea is a good one, and we hope to see it carried out. These meetings are profitable and pleasant gatherings, and promote good feeling and generous rivalry throughout the county.
We learn that Mr. J. W. Shanklin, the Republican candidate for Surveyor-General, will soon visit Los Angeles county, where he has hosts of personal friends, and where many farmers will be glad of an opportunity of repaying him in part by their votes for the public enterprise he has displayed in constructing the great Cajon ditch...Journal.
Contrary to an understanding with the and says Lesseps is astonished at the opposition manifested by the Americans when he showed his good will by offering to make General Grant the honorary President of the company.
New York, July 25th. The Tribune, regarding Admiral Ammen's report, says that the Congress did not have the proper knowledge of the character of some of the most important routes which were talked about, and was told next to nothing at all about the San Blas route, which is the shortest, and may yet be found the best of all. The facts of vast numbers of streams crossed by the Panama route, floods and freshets of that region, and other disadvantages of the route were not made clear, and in fact all such questions seem, strangely enough, to have been regarded, as the official report to our Government says, as matters for after consideration.
Fancy Price for a Farm.
New York, July 18. The Standard Oil Company has purchased a farm of twenty-one acres, at Berger Point, New Jersey, paying therefor an aggregate price of $420,500, or $20,000 an acre, which is the largest price ever paid for unimproved farm land in the vicinity of New York. There is no dock, street or improvement of any kind upon the property. The company will erect a refinery, tanks, stills and the necessary buildings, which will be occupied in addition to the extensive works now at Hunter's Point. They were compelled to purchase the property to secure a shipping point below the East River bridge, as the captains of the large vessels which carry their oils to foreign lands, object to passing under the East River bridge, as each time they do so they are obliged to house their top-gallant masts to prevent a collision with the cables. The farm for which this fabulous sum was paid, was purchased from T. and S. White, sulphur manufacturers, at Burling Slip.
Among the Russian convicts just sent to the Island of Saghalien on the steamer Niujni Novgorod, there are 100 Tartars and Circassians condemned for murder and robbery; there are also a number of Russian soldiers and Bulgarians condemned by court martial during the late Turko-Russian war; there is an old convict who in his lifetime committed 49 murders; there is one murderer who killed his mother and Grandfather; and so on. All these are kept in chains on shipboard. They are companions of the Nihilist men and women who have lately been condemned to transportation without any trial.
Imitation meerschaum pipes are now manufactured from potatoes in France. A peelled potato is placed in sulphuric acid and water, in the proportion of eight parts of the former to one hundred of the latter. It remains in this liquid thirty-six hours to backen is dried with blotting paper and submitted to a certain pressure, when it becomes a material that can be readily carved. The counterfeit is said to be excellent. An imitation ivory, sufficiently hard for billiard balls, can be made by still greater pressure. A resemblance of coral is obtained by treating carrots in the same manner.
We learn that Mr. J. W. Shanklin, the Republican candidate for Surveyor-General, will soon visit Los Angeles county, where he has hosts of personal friends, and where many farmers will be glad of an opportunity of repaying him in part by their votes for the public enterprise he has displayed in constructing the great Cajon ditch. Journal.
Contrary to an understanding with the leaders of the Democratic party, that but one Superior Judge should be nominated that party yesterday put two candidates in the field, Hon. Y. Sepulveda, the present District Judge, and A. M. Stephens, the present Probate and County Judge. The Republicans will now add another name to their list, and we learn that H. T. Hazard, Esq., who was the next highest in the Republican ballot for Superior Judge, will probably be placed on the ticket. Commercial.
The L. A. Journal says: General Bouton has not been accustomed, since he left the U. S. service, to carry firearms or defensive weapons of any kind, but when about to start upon his present trip his wife insisted that he should take his pistol with him, as he was going a difficult and more lonely route than he was accustomed to take. He at first refused to do so, as he considered "the thing a nuisance," but Mrs. Bouton persisted in making him take it along. Had he not done so he would probably have become an easy victim to the assassins who so cowardly waylaid him.
In seems the whole world, "and the rest of mankind," are taking a deep interest in our political fight. Mr. John Dolland, nominee for Assessor, at a recent meeting of the Workingmen's Central Committee, in Los Angeles, stated that he had received letters from London where they are awaiting news of this fight. "The eyes of not only the East, but of the civilized world is upon us, and it behooves us to do our whole duty." The king of the Cannibal Islands, the Zulu Chief and the Patagonians have also telegraphed for information, which they are anxiously awaiting. Mr. Dolland is expected to case their minds. On some of the irrigated lands of this county, malarial fever has made its appearance in a mild form. It seems to be caused from drinking water from the ditches, or from wells but a few feet deep, that are filled with seepage water. If people would bore to the second strata of water, and have their wells cased, and then use only that kind of water, they would avoid all danger of fever. Freeno Expositor.
Two Cornish brothers, named William and Thomas Arthur, had a quarrel at the Sheep Ranch, Calaveras county, on the 23d inst., the altercation being about the profligacy of Thomas. William shot twice with a pistol, the second ball striking Thomas in the right side of the abdomen and entering the cavity. He is supposed to be mortally wounded.
Dr. Dillard states that on last Saturday, a girl living several miles from Belton, and who was married last year before she was 12 years old, gave birth to a female infant. The mother is not yet thirteen years old, and will not be until September. The child mother and her babe were doing well at last accounts.[North Georgian]
It may be interesting to those who have postal relations with Mexico to learn that under the Postal Treaty letters to that country can be registered.
The Chicago Times tells of a poor man who went to Leadville and in five weeks took out $10,840 with no other tools than a pack of cards and a seven-shooter.

And all Diseases of the Breathing Organs.
HALL’S BALSAM
IS THE LEADING SPECIFIC FOR CONSUMPTION.
It soothes and heals the membrane of the lungs, inflamed and poisoned by the disease, and remedies the night sweats and tightness across the chest, which accompany it.
Consumption
Is not an incurable malady. It is only necessary to have the right remedy, and HALL’S BALSAM is that remedy.
Don't despair of relief, for this benign specific may cure you, even though professional aid fails.
READ THE POLLOWING:
Dr. D. D. Wright, of Cincinnati, sends us the sub-joined professional endorsement: "I have prescribed Hall’s balsam in a large number of cases and always with success." He adds that "in one case a patient with every appearance of confirmed consumption, was restored to his usual health soon after commencing to take the balsam."
John Kuhn, of Lafayette, Ind., writes: "One year ago I was to all appearances in the last stages of consumption, and got so low our doctor said I could not live 24 hours." Mr. Kuhn further states that "after taking nine bottles of Hall’s balsam he is now in perfect health, having used no other medicine!"
The above brief extracts are taken from a MASS OF EVIDENCE
which has been accumulating during a period of 21 years, proving the efficacy of Hall’s balsam in all ease where the breathing organs are affected, and shows the estimation in which the remedy is held by the public and the medical profession. Sold by all dru-gists. Proceed if percubille.
