Yellow Fellow.
MEMPHIS, July 24.-Fourteen new cases were reported this morning. Two carloads of tents, furnished by the Government, arrived to-day, and the city authorities will to-morrow establish a camp at a point seven miles north of the city, on the Paducah Railroad. The Howard Association yesterday placed a few nurses on duty. This morning the street in front of their rooms was crowded with colored people, all anxious to be assigned to duty. They were informed that no more nurses were required. Four deaths from yellow fever have occurred since morning.
NEW YORK, July 25.-A Memphis special states that inquiries among physicians concerning the progress of the fever reveal nothing new. Some insist that we have a malignant type of malarial; others that we have the genuine yellow fever, but that it will not be nearly as bad as in 1873 or 1878. Visita to different relief organizations disclose no new cases, and those under treatment are doing moderately well. The Howards visitor reports only three cases needing assistance. The Howards are receiving letters and dispatches from Northern people offering services as nurses, but no nurses are wanted yet, and none will be engaged to do service unless acclimated.
In New York much apparent apprehension exists regarding the cases of yellow fever discovered here and in Brooklyn. The fact seems overlooked that we have nearly every summer three or four cases, and so far those this year do not differ in kind from former years. The Sanitary Superintendent affirms that the city is cleaner this summer than it has been for several years, and no alarm need exist on this score.
SAN FRANCISCO, July 24th.-The suit brought by James Whitmore in the United States Circuit Court to eject 300 or more settlers from their lands in Los Angeles county, is slowly progressing, and yesterday afternoon the plaintiff, Whitmore, Leonardo de Cutter, E. H. Johnson, Charles D. Healey and Charles S. Ford testified for the prosecution. The interests involved in this case are great, some 20,000 acres of land, known

The dog was lying on the beach, and upon hearing the boy's cry for help, plunged in and rescued him.
The well-known "Red" (so called because he is black) was arrested yesterday for vagrancy and convicted. He argued his case eloquently before the Justice, and cited in proof of his industry and frugality that he had four white shirts, a pair of pants as good as those of the arresting officer and an extra that the city is cleaner this summer than it has been for several years, and no alarm need exist on this score.
SAN FRANCISCO, July 24th.-The suit brought by James Whitmore in the United States Circuit Court to eject 300 or more settlers from their lands in Los Angeles county, is slowly progressing, and yesterday afternoon the plaintiff, Whitmore, Leonardo de Cutter, E.H.Johnson, Charles D. Healey and Charles S.Ford testified for the prosecution. The interests involved in this case are great, some 20,000 acres of land, known as the Rancho Las Bolsas, being in dispute.A rough approximation of the value of the property is $500,000.Besides this,$50,000 is sued for the cost of suit. The answers to the complaint aver that the plaintiff is not, as stated,a native of New York Statebut is a citizen of California, and that suit is barred by Sections 318, 319 and 324 of the Statutes of Civil Procedure.Witmore does not claim the fee simple of the property in question; but holds that he is the only lawful lessee of the original grantee of the land, which is an old Mexican land grant, patented by the United States and surveyed in 1835.
The number of men who in sudden fits of passion have killed their servants,is, in modern times at least, not large.Probably the most remarkable case, both for the rank of the criminal and the rigid impartiality of his trial,is that of Laurence,Earl of Ferrers, who was hanged for murder more than one hundred years ago.His family were rich and noble, and traced their ancestry back to the reign of Edward the Confessor.Their crest, sill worn by a successor of the ill-starred Earl, bears the lofty sounding motto,Honor virtutia pramium-Honor is the reward of fidelity.
The crime of the unfortunate nobleman was the shooting of his steward, who had angered him by inattention to his orders, and who,in a subsequent altercation,sо excitedthe Earl that the latter got his pistol, returned to the scene of the quarrel, and fired the fatal shot. The steward lingered 2 day or two and died in great agony.A warrant was issued by the nearest Justice of the Peace and the Earl was arrested. He pleaded in excuse that "the fellow's conduct had been insupportable, and that he only got what he deserved."Being a member of the House of Lords, the titled member was granted a hearing before that august body It was proved that he had quarrellled with his wife and that his conduct for years had been morose, violent and eccentric.Their lordships, however, had found him rational in thought and speech, and after a careful examination pronounced him sane to all intents and purposes. He was convicted by a large majority, and sentenced to be hanged as a common felon at Tyburn. The execution took place on the 5th of May,1760,在the presence of an immense multitude, drawn thither by the unusual spectacle of a lord suffering on the gallows. The Earl was allowed to ride to Tyburn in his own coach with armorial

—The well-known "Red" (so called because he is black) was arrested yesterday for vagrancy and convicted. He argued his case eloquently before the Justice, and cited in proof of his industry and frugality that he had four white shirts, a pair of pants as good as those of the arresting officer and an extra pair of shoes not half as badly worn as those on the feet of the Judge. But notwithstanding this amplitude of wardrobe, he will pass the next sixty days in the county jail.
—Items from the Downey Courier: On Tuesday last John Robbins had an examination before Judge Williams, on a charge of arson, and was discharged. We are informed by Mr. W. W. Allen, counsel for the prosecution, that there was an entire failure on the part of the witnesses for the prosecution to make out a case against Robbins...Mr. E. R. Wylie, living two miles north of Downey, has made a new discovery in the tobacco line, a kind of weed which grows spontaneously through our midst. He tells us that he has given it a fair test, and he finds it equal to any Virginia ever produced.
—Manuel Villa, of the Brea rancho, was desperately in love with Prima Rocha, but the cruel parents opposed adopting Manuel as a "yerno." On Tuesday, while the loving Prima was visiting at the house of a neighbor, in company with her sister, Manuel drove up and called for his charming novia, who entered his carriage for a pasea, and drove rapidly towards the city. The sister hurried home and gave the alarm, and a younger brother on horseback with a rida pursued the runaway couple towards the city, followed by an infuriated mother who refused to be a mother-in-law, and the rest of the family in a spring wagon. The chase was fast and furious. None but the little brother on horseback overtook the flying lovers, but the job of capturing them was too much for the young Castillian, and he returned ignominiously, while the infuriated mother was a bad third in the race, and failed to capture her runaway daughter, who was married yesterday to her daring cavalier.
—Commercial.
—In the case of Collins and Parsons charged with arson, in the County Court yes terday, the prosecution being of the opinion that the evidence did not sustain the indictment, moved the Court to instruct the jury to acquit. The jury therefore rendered its oral verdict of not guilty without leaving the box. Prisoners released from custody.
Many tea plants were set in North and South Carolina and Georgia years ago, but it was not profitable to gather and prepare them in the elaborate Chinese style and the plants were left to grow wild. The Agricultural Bureau in Washington received a barrel of leaves from South Carolina. They were placed in wire sieves and steamed, and then run through a clothes wringer to extract the tannic acid. The structure of the leaf was destroyed in the process, and the mass was placed in an ordinary pan and dried by a fire. A decoction was made and the aroma was delightful.
The well-known capitalist, D. O. Mills, having recently made extensive investment in the Eastern States which demand his personal supervision, will, it is reported, spend about half of his time in New York, and the remainder on this coast. Mr. Mills has a large investment in the Lake Shore Railroad. He will build for his eastern home a palatial residence in New York city, retaining for his California home the beautiful villa at Milbrea. —Chronicle, July 24.

Hall’s BALSAM
FOR THE LUNGS.
ERADICATES
Coughs, Colds, Pneumonia, Bronchitis,
Asthma, Creup, Wheoping Cough,
And all Diseases of the Breathing Organs.
HALL’S BALSAM
IS THE LEADING SPECIFIC FOR CONSUMption.
It soothes and heals the membrane of the lungs, inflamed and poisoned by the disease, and remedies the night sweats and tightness across the chest, which accompany it.
Consumption
Is not an incurable malady. It is only necessary to have the right remedy, and Hall’s BALSAM is that remedy.
Don’t despair of relief, for this benign specific may cure you, even though professional aid fails.
READ THE FOLLOWING:
Dr. D. D. Wright, of Cincinnati, sends us the subjoined professional endorsement: "I have prescribed Hall’s Balsam in a large number of cases, and always with success." He adds that "in one case a patient with every appearance of confirmed consumption, was restored to his usual health soon after commencing to take the Balsam."
John Kuhn, of Lafayette, Ind., writes: "One year ago I was to all appearances in the last stages of consumption, and got so low our doctor said I could not live 24 hours." Mr. Kuhn furthers states that "after taking nine bottles of Hall’s Balsam he is now in perfect health, having used no other medicine."
The above brief extracts are taken from a MASS OF EVIDENCE which has been accumulating during a period of 20 years, proving the efficacy of Hall’s Balsam in all cases where the breathing organs are affected, and showing the estimation in which the remedy is held by the public and the medical profession. Sold by all dru-gists. Price $1 per bottle.
