The duration of the storm's greatest violence was about twenty-five minutes, and in that time great damage was done to life and property. Reports from various points down the harbor contain accounts of serious damage and distressing accidents. Many small yachts and other boats were capsized. The most serious disaster yet reported is that of the small schooner "Myrtle" of Charlestown, having on board six persons, consisting of four women, a man and a boy. The schooner was capsized off Bird Island, and all excepting the man Thus Dunham, who clung to the topmast, were drowned. FITCHBURO, Mass., June 16th.—The worst tornado which ever visited this vicinity passed over this city to-day. The tornado lasted three minutes and all damage was done instantly. The spire of Universalist Church was hurled into Main street, opposite the Rollstone House. The tin roof of the City Hall was launched into the street. The easterly wall of the extension to the City Hall, in process of construction, was blown down and several workmen had very narrow escapes. Trees along the street, from Fitchburg Hotel to the Episcopal Church, were to a great extent blown down or broken off, and also several on Hartwell, Pritchard and other streets. Many houses lost their chimneys, seven falling from the Fitchburg Hotel. The damage to the City Hall is estimated at $11,000. PITTSFIELD, Mass., July 16.—This afternoon a tornado from the west struck the southern suburbs. Two persons were killed and three or four wounded, some fatally. Buildings were unroofed and blown down. Hundreds of trees were leveled, and fully $20,000 damage was done. A black cloud springing up suddenly in the west, while the thermometer registered 86, was the first warning of the approach of the storm. In fifteen minutes the sky was so black the gas had to be lighted in the stores. Rain mingling with hail, a rushing wind and almost incessant lightning and thunder, made the storm memorable, even if it had not been so TOWN OFFICERS Preasurer ... Treo Rimpau Assessor ... MEMPHIS, Tenn., July 21.-Fiften cases of yellow fever were reported to the Board of Health this morning. Among the most prominent are W.C.Coppinger and wife, Geo.Nail and the two Misses Roja. Two deaths have occurred, Dr.J.C.Harris and W.C.Coppinger. The exodus of citizens is in full progress. Business is almost entirely suspended, and the outlook is anything but cheering. St.Louis, July 21.-The Health authorities decided to-night on putting in force a partial quarantine against Memphis. A corps of physicians and sanitary officers was sent down to quarantine, 15 miles below the city, to stop Memphis boats, inspect all passengers and make use of disinfectants. Memphis, July 20.-Ten new cases were reported to the Board of Health to-day. Four persons have died of fever since last night. There are several other cases of fever in the city, which will be reported to the Board of Health to-morrow. The city authorities are sending poor people out of the city, having made arrangements to get half-fare rates over the Louisville and Nashville Railroads. Dr.Dudley D.Saunders, Acting President of the Board of Health, states that the fever is not so malignant as last year and yields more rapidly to treatment. Citizens continue to leave in large numbers. Memphis, July 20.-The Memphis and Paducah Railroad ceased running trains today. The Avalanche, Appeal and Ledger will from to-day issue only half sheets. NASHVILLE, July 20.-The health of Nashville was never better. In consequence of the inspection and quarantine at Memphis the authorities here will take no steps to impede the travel to this place. The State Board of Health will meet to-day to consider various matters connected with the fever at Memphis. CINCINNATI, July 20.-Dr.Minor. health officer of this city, will publish an order to morrow declaring the establishment of quarantine against infected points in the South. On motion of Supervisor Prager the Clerk was instructed to ask the District Attorney to file a written opinion specifying what officers are to be elected in Los Angeles county at the general election to be held September 3, 1879. On motion, next Wednesday, July 23d, was set for making alterations and changes in the voting precincts of Los Angeles Co. Prohibition Convention. The Prohibition State Convention met in San Francisco on Wednesday, M.C. Winchester of Knight's Landing in the chair, and eight members present, for the purpose of nominating State officers. The Convention organized with the following permanent officers: Chairman, M.C. Winchester of Knight's Landing; Secretary, R.H. Wiley of Napa; Treasurer, George Morris of Alameda; Executive Committee—A.G. Clark and R.H. Wiley of Napa; Geo. Morris of Alameda; E.A. Borainne of San Francisco, and W.W. Bingham of Meridian, Sutter Co. The following nominations were made: For Governor, A.G. Clark of Napa; Lieutenant-Governor, Geo. Brannall, Haywards; Secretary of State, A.A. Smith, North Bloomfield; Attorney General, C.W. Cross, Nevada; Superintendent of Schools, S.N. Burch, Lompoe. The Executive Committee, in accordance with instructions, filled out the ticket as follows: Treasurer, W.O. Clark; Controller, M.C. Winchester; Surveyor General, J.W. The different districts are to nominate the remaining officers. Cincinnati, July 20.—Dr. Minor, health officer of this city, will publish an order tomorrow declaring the establishment of quarantine against infected points in the South. Boats will be stopped in mid-stream, ten miles below the city, and examined, and railroad trains will be subjected to rigid inspection. A Refreshing Beverage. Dr. Walter Lewis, in describing the precaution against cholera adopted at the General Postoffice in London, says: "The men employed in sorting letters and newspapers suffer much from thirst, and consequently drink much water while engaged in their duties. Although the postoffice is supplied with excellent water, much diarrhoea was nevertheless, the result of this practice. To remedy this the officers, clerks and men of all classes have of late been supplied from the medical department with a most agreeable drink, which not only assuages the thirst, but has, moreover, strong antiseptic and anti-diarrhoea properties. It is called orangeade, and is thus composed: Take of dilute sulphuric acid, concentrated infusion of orange peel, each twelve drachms; syrup of orange peel, five fluid ounces. This quantity is added to two gallons of water. A large wineglassful is taken for a draught, mixed with more or less water according to taste. The officers drank this with pleasure. It is being consumed in large quantities daily, and I am convinced it will be the means of warding off a great deal of sickness." An order has been issued by Judge Wright of the San Francisco County Court that hereafter the marriage licenses shall not be available for publication, as it has been a source of annoyance to parties interested and against public policy. James T. Hoyt, of San Francisco, formerly Major U.S.A., died on last Friday, aged 51. Geo.F. Bragg, a prominent merchant of San Francisco, died on the same day. Louis Gerdes, aged 17, attempted to commit suicide at San Jose on last Friday. He cut his throat with a butcher knife, but the wound is not fatal. It is thought that he was love-sick. Don’t despair of relief, for this benign specific may cure you, even though professional aid fails. READ THE FOLLOWING: Dr. D. D. Wright, of Cincinnati, sends us the subjoined professional endorsement. “I have prescribed Hall’s balsam in a large number of cases, and always with success.” He adds that “in one case a patient with every appearance of confirmed consumption, was restored to his usual health soon after commencing to take the Balsam.” John Kuhn, of Lafayette, Ind., writes: “One year ago I was to all appearances in the last stages of consumption, and got so low our doctor said I could not live 24 hours.” Mr. Kuhn further states that “after taking nine bottles of Hall’s balsam he is now in perfect health, having used no other medicine.” The above brief extracts are taken from a MASS OF EVIDENCE which has been accumulating during a period of 29 years, proving the efficacy of Hall’s balsam in all cases where the breathing organs are affected, and showing the estimation in which the remedy is held by the public and the medical profession.” Sold by all druggists.
