Close of the School Term.
Our Public School closed yesterday. Owing to the illness of Mr. Guinn, the full examination of the various classes, which in former years has usually occupied three days, was this year dispensed with. But as the term of so interesting an institution could hardly be allowed to pass without some demonstration, nearly the usual number of visitors found their way to the school-house, where we are sure they spent a very pleasant foremoon in witnessing the performances of the pupils. We regret that pressing business prevented us from visiting the two departments down stairs, but the short time we spent in the Intermediate department convinced us that Miss des Granges is doing a valuable work. The specimens of industrial drawing on the blackboard showed a training which will be invaluable to the pupils in future years and may become the basis of more extended art study. At 11 o'clock Miss des Granges' pupils passed into the Grammar Department, which since Mr. Guinn's illness has been under the management of Mr. Henderson. The combination of the two departments presented a very fine appearance. It would not be easy to find another such assemblage of fine intelligent looking children, nor easy to find so many acquitting themselves so well. We do not like to single any single exercise for enumeration where all were so good. But there was one feature which ought not to pass unnoticed—the singing. The visitors were singularly pleased with it as a pleasant variation from the recitations, compositions, etc. The piece enjoyed most by visitors and pupils alike, was "The Farmer Boy" with its whistling chorus. We thought the boys puckered admirably, adding a piquant relish to the sweet, clear voices of the girls. At the close of the exercises, Mr. Henderson announced the pleasing intelligence that Mr. Guinn's health was steadily improving and conveyed the worthy Principal's kindly wishes to his pupils for a happy vacation.

Mr. J. H. Haines, the telegraph operator, has succeeded in perfecting an improvement of the centrifugal pump, which will doubtless bring it into general use. The difficulty with these pumps heretofore was that they had to be submerged, but the simple attachment invented by Mr. Haines obviates this necessity and keeps the pump always primed, and makes it throw out an immense stream of water at the first revolution. It appears to be just the kind of pump required for raising water for irrigation, little power being required to raise a great volume of water. A centrifugal pump has been known to raise 1800 gallons of water per minute.
WINCHESTER, Va. June 6.—The unveiling of the two monuments erected to the memory of the Confederate dead and the decoration of graves took place this afternoon at Stonewall Cemetery. The procession was large and was marshaled by Gen. Joseph E. Johnston. The monument erected by the ladies bears the following inscription: "In memory of three hundred and ninety-eight Virginia soldiers lying under this ground, who fell in defence of constitutional liberty and the sovereignty of their State from 1861 to 1865." The graves were decorated with flowers and evergreens, and marked by the flags of the Confederate flag was also displayed, but in the adjoining National Cemetery the National flag was flying. The speaker's stand was draped with the Confederate colors, white and red, with mourning stripes.

FOR THE LUNGS

HALL’S BALSAM
IS THE LEADING SPECIFIC FOR CONSUMPTION
It soothes and heals the membrane of the lungs, inflamed and poisoned by the disease, and remedies the night sweats and tightness across the chest, which accompany it.
Consumption
Is not an incurable malady. It is only necessary to have the right remedy, and HALL’S BALSAM is that remedy.
Don’t despair of relief, for this benign specific may cure you, even though professional aid fails.
READ THE FOLLOWING:
Dr D. D. Wright, of Cincinnati, sends us the subjoined professional endorsement. “I have prescribed Hall’s Balsam in a large number of cases, and always with success.” He adds that “in one case a patient with every appearance of confirmed consumption, was restored to his usual health soon after commending to take the Balsam.”
John Kuhn, of Lafayette, Ind., writes: “One year ago I was to all appearances in the last stages of consumption, and got so low our doctor said I could not live 24 hours.” Mr Kuhn further states that “after taking nine bottles of Hall’s Balsam he is now in perfect health, having used no other medicine.
The above brief extracts are taken from a MASS OF EVIDENCE which has been accumulating during a period of 20 years, proving the efficacy of Hall’s Balsam in all cases where the breathing organs are affected, and showing the estimation in which the remedy is held by the public and the medical profession. Sold by all drug gists. Price, $1 per bottle.
