Mitchell NEW YORK, May 22 — The Bulletin presents statistics showing a large decline in farming operations in New York, Connecticut, New Jersey and Pennsylvania since 1875. While New York has increased in population 21 per cent, the agricultural interests have utterly failed to keep pace with the general progress of the State; and therefore, relatively farming is retrogressing. Nor is this the worst aspect of the case. The impoverished and debt and burthened condition of farmers leaves no hope for their recuperation, but rather forebids a still worst condition of things in the future. What we have here shown to exist in New York is but a specimen of the state affairs in Connecticut, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, also; and the conclusion to be drawn is that in this group of States farming is very toward a condition of things in which it will be virtually confined to dairy products and vegetable growing, to an extent necessary to supply city populations, while the larger and more solid branches must steadily decline. New York, May 22nd. — The Times says: Advices from China indicate that the Government of the Celestial empire is as much disappointed by the President's veto of the anti-Chinese bill as Dennis Kearney was. In the rush of recent events people have almost forgotten that there was an anti-Chinese bill to be revoed. But while that proscriptive measure was under discussion, it was urged in these columns that Congressional measures to exclude the Chinese would certainly provoke retaliation upon American residents in China, and that our commercial relations with that country would be injured. This is precisely what the Chinese Government intended. The chief desire of that retrogressive Empire is to get rid of foreigners. The President's veto has turned aside one occasion which the Chinese government would have gladly improved. It is not quite time for Chinese politicians to say, "The Americans must go." WASHINGTON, May 21 — The Commissioner of Indian Affairs has a dispatch that the settlers who squatted to the west of the Sac and Fox Agency, are leaving rapidly before the TOWN BOARD OF TRUSTEES B. The store-room in the Gazette building has been leased by Mr. Cohen and the proprietor, Mr. Conrad, is building a warehouse and stable in the rear of the building, for the convenience of the lessee. One of the women who were run over last September near Rubio's station by the Santa Ana train, died in Los Angeles last Friday night of disease resulting from her injuries on that occasion. Just as the meeting to form a Constitutional Club was getting under weigh on Wednesday night, the fire alarm was given, and the members stood not upon the order of their going, but went. It was intended to reconvene last evening. Mr. H. McLellan and family returned from their extensive three months' trip this morning per the Orizaba. Mr. McLellan appears in the best of health, and is a shining example of the benefit of a sea voyage. The members of the Grand Army of the country would be injured. This is precisely what the Chinese Government intended. The chief desire of that retrogressive Empire is to get rid of foreigners. Washington, May 21.-The Commissioner of Indian Affairs has a dispatch that the settlers who squatted to the west of the Sac and Fox Agency, are leaving rapidly before the cavalry. St. Louis, May 21.-A special from Vinitia, Indian Territory, to the Globe-Democrat says: Two companies of U.S.s troops, under Major Wilcox, Fourth Cavalry, are quartered there to prevent squatters entering the territory. Soldiers constantly at the railroad depot, and all persons arriving with the intention of going on Government land, are escorted out of the Territory. Major Wilcox says that in marching over a hundred miles in the Territory, he met but few squatters and these were removed. New York, May 21.-The Board of Education today received and accepted the resignation of City Supt. of Public Schools, Henry Kiddle, to take effect on September 1st next. Mr.Kiddle, it will be remembered, gained considerable notoriety latterly because of his spiritualistic book. The Philadelphia Ledger thinks it very curious that all the messages from the spirit world come in our own language—no matter whether the author is a Greek, Jew, Swiss, Italian, or a Berks-county Dutchman.Evidently, the English is the universal language in the Summer land. The members of the Grand Army of the Republic in Los Angeles will observe Decoration Day—the 30th inst. They will form in procession and march to the cemetery, where the graves of the Union dead will be decorated with flowers. The Democratic State Central Committee have decided to put off the State Convention until July 1st. The sentiment of the Committee was that time should be given to allow the feeling engendered in certain sections against Democrats who voted against the new Constitution. We are in receipt of a number of letters relative to the proposed colony to be formed for immigration to Guatemala. Major Horace Bell of this city is now in correspondence with the President of Guatemala, and in a short time will be able to announce the conditions which that Government will offer to a colony emigrating to that republic. Commercial. San Diego Union: We learn that Mr. Pajol has leased the Temecula and Panba Ranches to Meura, Graves & Bros., of Santa Clara county, who propose to introduce a colony or colonies upon these fine lands. The Meura. Graves will proceed immediately with this praiseworthy undertaking, and we are informed, with the most certain assurances of success. They will be on the ground in November. The terms of the lease are said to be $1000 and the payment of taxes. The intention is to farm the land, cultivating wheat and corn. From five to ten families will be located before the end of the year. Mr. J. M. Gonzales will still remain on the Temecula Ranch, and intends building a fine residence just this side of Marietta's house, where he will fence some fifty acres and put the land under irrigation.
