Editor Gazette:—We have just passed through one of those warm contents, the object of which was to adopt a new organic law for the government of this State, and the result has been decided. We can say with pride that here in our little town, as well as all over the State, the campaign has been conducted with that real characteristic of the interest which the American people take in public affairs and while the election was the most warmly contented of any within our collection, we are proud to say that, according to the principle upon which our Republic is founded, every one paid that just respect to the opinion of his neighbor, which is necessary in a country where people govern themselves. We look back a few short years and see in our history a contest between different parties of the American people, a mistake to which millions of graves testify, and a few years was necessary to bring about that feeling of friendship which was necessary to make the North and the South turn out hand in hand to deck with white flowers the graves of their loved ones. But in the context which has just gone by and become a thing of the past, but a single day brings that feeling which makes us extend the hand of fellowship to our opponents and say, "you fought your battle bravely." And while we believe that to err is human, to forgive divine, we can forgive all who opposed us, but we have a greater respect for those who took a bold and manly stand against us than those of either party who were non-commital and afraid to express their opinion. Every good citizen is ready to admit that in this State as well as others the majority must rule and the minority must be content with the verdict of the people. We believe that the present new law will increase the happiness of the rich as well as the poor; that all classes alike will be benefited. And now we cordially invite those belonging to both parties and the ladies especially, to attend a congratulatory re-union at Kroeger's Hall to-night. Members of both parties will be invited to address the meeting in that patriotic spirit which makes members of all parties respect an honorable opposition. D. R. PAYNE, Secretary Constitutional Club. New York, May 8.—The Public to-day, in the review for the month, says: The exchanges for April are decidedly more encouraging than those of any preceding month for a long time. The increase is so general and at the chief cities so large, that there can be no doubt as to the general improvement in the volume of business. San Francisco, New Orleans and Milwaukee are exceptions for reasons which do not at all affect the statement. The aggregate ex- TOWN OFFICERS Theo Rimpau Assessor John Fischer Marshal Dan R. William H.Gladstone has been arrested for burglary. He is not the ex-Premier of England—only a disreputable character in Los Angeles. D.C.Wilson's house at Los Nietos was burned down on Wednesday. The fire was occasioned by a detective flue. Loss, $2000; insured for $1000. The proposed torchlight procession, in honor of Wednesday's victory, has been abandoned, and instead, a public meeting, or love-feast, will be held at Kroeger's Hall tonight, at which the ruffled plumage of the erstwhile opponents will be smoothed down. We received a letter last evening from a town in the northern part of the county, in which the writer desires us to give him the address of the chief officer of the association. The average weekly consumption of Black Star coal in Los Angeles amounts to three carloads. There is every reason to believe that this home fuel will, next winter, be used to the entire exclusion of the imported coal. The railroad company propose to reduce the freight rate, and this will enable the coal company to sell their coal in Los Angeles at a very low figure. From the Express of last evening we learn that Justice Athearn, of Anaheim, met with quite a serious accident on Thursday, while driving to Los Angeles. On the road between Fulton Wells and the Seventeen Mile House, one of his buggy wheels ran into a rut, turning the vehicle over. The horse, frightened by the accident, ran away, dragging Mr. Athearn some distance under the overturned buggy, bruising his face and shoulder badly. In Memoriam. ANAHEIM, May 8, 1879. Whereas It has pleased the Supreme Disposer of all events to take to Himself our dear brother, P. C. McKinnie, in the midst of his usefulness; and, whereas, this dispensation has left his family and the church of which he was an active and honored member and efficient officer, to mourn their irreparable loss; therefore, Resolved That we, the officers and members of the Presbyterian Church of Anaheim, do how in submission to the divine decree, and offer to the widow and children of our departed brother our sincere condolence and sympathy; and that, as an expression of our esteem and appreciation, these resolutions be placed upon the records of the Church, and forwarded for publication to the Anaheim Gazette and the Occident. Signed under the sanction and at the request of the Church and session. E. HARRIDAY, Pastor. E. A. SAFTON, Clerk. Some burglars tried to break into the shop of Fieldsend, pawnbroker, at Sheffield, on Wednesday night. Having failed to force the windows or the doors, one of the number, a young man of nineteen years of age, was told off to descend the chimney and afterwards admit his companions into the premises by the door. As the chimney was very wide at the top, he had no difficulty in getting into it, but on descending about 20 feet it narrowed so much that he was unable either to advance or retreat, and remained jammed there for seven hours. His moaning became fearful after the fire was kindled, in the morning, and an alarm was given. The chimney was pulled down, but, blackened with scot and partially roasted, he died as soon as he was pulled out by the detectives. English Paper. The Rev. J. C. Beltzly, Lutheran, is out with a calculation of the size of heaven, based on the statement of Revelations that the angels "measured the city with the reed 12,000 furlongs. The length, the breadth, and the height of it are equal." Taking eight furlongs to equal a mile, he comes to the following conclusions: "The heavensy city will be 1,500 miles in each of its dimensions, which will accommodate all the people of all the worlds with separate apartments. There will be precisely 39 quintillion, 541 quadrillion, 166 trillion, 668 billion, 660 million, 663 thousand and 666] records of fair size, and there will remain over 240 quadrillions of manSIONs unoccupied, to be occupied by the angels." We solicit the patronage of those who require anything in the job printing line. We have hundreds of dollars invested in job printing material, and our facilities are such that we can afford to do every kind of printing at the shortest notice and at lowest prices. ERADICATES Coughs, Colds, Pneumonia, Bronchitis, Asthma, Crops, Wheezing Cough, And all Diseases of the Breathing Organs. HALL’S BALSAM IS THE LEADING SPECIFIC FOR CONSUMption It weothes and heals the membrane of the lungs, inflamed and poisoned by the disease, and remedies the night sweats and tightness across the chest, which accompany it. Consumption Is not an incurable malady. It is only necessary to have the right remedy, and HALL’S BALSAM is that remedy. Don’t despair of relief, for this benign specific may cure you, even though professional aid fails. READ THE FOLLOWING: Dr. D. D. Wright, of Cincinnati, sends us the subjoined professional endorsement: "I have prescribed Hall’s Balsam in a large number of cases, and always with success." He adds that "in one case a patient with every appearance of confirmed consumption, was restored to his usual health soon after commencing to take the Balsam." Johli Kuhn, of Lafayette, Ind., writes: "One year ago I was to all appearances in the last stages of consumption, and got so low our doctor said I could not live 24 hours." Mr. Kuhn further states that "after taking nine bottles of Hall’s Balsam he is now in perfect health, having used no other medicine." The above brief extracts are taken from a MASS OF EVIDENCE which has been accumulating during a period of 29 years, proving the efficacy of Hall’s Balsam in all cases where the breathing organs are affected, and showing the estimation in which the remedy is held by the public and the medical profession.
