Mr. Holman is putting out an orange orchard of seven hundred trees on his farm north-west of town. The trees are being furnished from the nursery of Mr. R. H. Gilman. Those who think "old Grimes is dead" are very much mistaken. Mr. B. Grimes writes all the way from Ventura county, nominating Gen. Howard for Governor. The new steamer "State of California" arrived at San Francisco on last Thursday. Mr. H. McLellan and family, of Los Angeles, were passengers, and are in fine health. A rumpus of some magnitude occurred at a Chinese washhouse on Los Angeles street yesterday. One Chinaman was cut over the eye with a knife, and the Chinaman who did the cutting was somewhat hurt. The facts of the trouble will come out before Justice Bailey this morning. The unpropitious weather last Saturday did not prevent a spirited game of baseball being played by the Anaheim and Orange Clubs. After a sharp contest, victory perched upon the bats of the Anaheim Club. The score stood 16 to 12. A contest between the same Clubs will come off at Orange on Saturday afternoon. Mr. J. E. Meader, the well borer, has completed a well on Joseph C. Hill's farm, 5 miles northwest of town. The well is 294 feet deep, and gives a stream 2½ inches at two feet above the surface. The same gentleman has just finished a well for Mr. E. B. Foster, of Centralia, 272 feet deep with a flow of 13 inches. The Right Rev. Wm. Ingraham Kip, Bishop of California, will hold a confirmation service in St. Michael's Protestant Episcopal Church on Sunday morning next. We understand that previous to the "Laying on of Hands" several persons will be admitted to the Church by baptism. The Los Angeles Commercial [Republican] says that the Democrats seem to have settled down on General Stoneman for Railroad Commissioner, and Gov. Irwin for renomination for Governor. General Baldwin is a prominent candidate for Surveyor-General and Judge Sepulveda for Judge of the Court of Appeals. On the Republican side a strong movement is being made for Gen. J. G. Eastman for Railroad Commissioner. At the regular quarterly meeting of the District Lodge, Independent Order of Good Templars, held in Los Angeles homes for cavalry use, are nowhere Angeles. At the regular quarterly meeting of the District Lodge, Independent Order of Good Templars, held in Los Angeles on Saturday last, the following resolution was adopted: Resolved, That we, as Good Templars, and lovers of the cause of temperance, in view of the adoption of the new Constitution, demand at the hands of the next Legislature the enactment of what is known as the Local Option law. The terribly damaging frost which afflicted the State last December had a very depressing effect on the semi-tropical nursery business of this vicinity. Our nurserymen were expecting to fill large orders for trees for the northern and middle part of the State; in fact, they had already made large contracts to furnish trees to persons living in those sections, but after the frost referred to, the orders were countermanded, Mr. R. H. Gilman cited one instance where he had agreed to deliver $2000 worth of trees, to one man, but the "cold, chilly winds of December" caused the contract to be vacated. A San Francisco paper says: The will of Petra S. Gelcich has been filed in the Probate Court. The will bequeaths to her mother, Pilar Bernal de Pico, ten acres of the Gelcich oil claim in the San Fernando Oil Mining District, Los Angeles county. Josephine Green also receives ten acres of the Ted oil claim in the same district; also, property in San Jose. The remainder of the property is given to her husband, Vincent Gelcich. She directs that her South Park property in San Francisco, and her interest in the Rancho Nejl, Lower California, be sold, and that the proceeds therefrom be expended in the erection of a monument over her remains, which are to be placed in Los Angeles. The estate is valued at $8,000. WEEKLY EIM GAZ ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA: SATURDAY, MAY 17, 1879. BURYING THE HATCHET. Saturday Night's Meeting. In response to the call for a joint meeting of the rival contestants in the Constitutional campaign, a large audience assembled at Kroeger's Hall Saturday evening last. Mr. Gannon was chosen Chairman, and Mr. D. E. Payne Secretary. Mr. Payne in a few appropriate remarks stated the object of the meeting. We had just passed through a hotly contested campaign. A new organic law for the State had been adopted. He believed that it would redound greatly to the benefit of the State. It might need some changes and amendments; these the friends of the new Constitution were willing to make. He hoped that those who had advocated and those who had opposed would forget their little differences and disputes and work together for the common good. To bring about a more harmonious state of feeling, this meeting had been called. Judge Bailey was called for. He said that our Puritan forefathers began their preparation for Sunday on Saturday evening. He thought that evening very appropriate to commence preparations for harmonizing our little differences. He believed the new Constitution would work great good to the State. The tyranny of railroads and corporations was increasing every year. Something had to be done to curb their power, or the liberties of the people would be lost. Mr. Guinn was called for. He asked to be excused. He did not come to the meeting with the intention of speaking. The audience seemed determined that he should speak. He took the stand and said that he was one of the whipped. He had pitched SPOOKS IN FLAGENTIA. A Haunted House - The Mysterious Light. Placentia School District, a few miles north-east of Anaheim, is not at all what its name implies. It is said that the residents there are just now in a disturbed frame of mind, which makes the name, Placentia, a misnomer. Those of our readers who know the locality will remember an old, dilapidated adobe house on Mr. Kraemer's rancho. Thereby hangs a tale: On every dark night for some weeks past, a bright, intense light has been seen to hover around and near this house, gyrating about in the most alarmingly rapid manner, sometimes making excursions into the adjacent country, but generally remaining in the near vicinity of the house. Everyone in the neighborhood has seen the light and watched its antics, and there is great disquiet in consequence. It is reported that Mr. Kraemer and his sons followed the light a few nights ago, and as they advanced upon it, it retreated into the adobe. They followed, and found the house in the usual state of dilapidation, and the mysterious light did not re-appear until they had gone some distance from the house. Its antics then appeared to indicate great glee at having outwitted its pursuers, and since then it has seemed to grow bolder and more agile every night. The theories in regard to this light are many and various. It grieves us to state that there are not wanting persons who do not hesitate to affirm that Dr. Schlesinger, the spirit medium and physician, has induced some evil spirit to make these nightly visitations, for the purpose of influencing the people and inducing them to ac LIFE IN ALASKA. Editor of THE APPEAL.-Sir: I have been told by men who know you that if I sent you a statement of facts—as far as I know them—concerning the late Indian troubles, you would publish the same in your paper. Consequently I will give you facts and nothing else. I am a discharged soldier, having served nearly thirteen years in the United States army—four years of it in the volunteer army during the war. Two years ago I settled upon an island in the harbor of Sitka, just across from the Indian village. It has been held in the discussion on the new Constitution that this provision will repeal all special enactments and privileges granted by former Legislatures. But this is a question which will have to be decided by the new Judiciary. If it should rule in accordance with the usual interpretation of the English language, the Police Commissioners will go and will be succeeded by whatever form of police management the next Legislature may prescribe. The mode of amending the new Constitution is apparently spadier than that which now exists. But the machinery is more difficult to handle. A two-thirds majority in both houses is required to present an amendment to the people. In other words, one more than one-third of the Senate—that is to say fourteen men—can prevent any modification or change. New York, May 12.—Rev. Gen. H. Gallagher, Presbyterian, has come East from Utah to arrows interest in mission stations there. He preached in Spring-street Church yesterday, vigorously denouncing and exposing Mormonism. He says the principal difficulty in convicting polygamists under the recent decision is proof of marriage. Antipolygamists there want the common law rule of evidence to prevail, which holds parties living together and acknowledging themselves husband and wife; also a law excepting Mormons from jury duty in these cases. If ordinary proof of acknowledgment and consent were held, we could convict every Mormon in a week. He intends lecturing through the State on the subject. Punnie and Katie Byrne, granddaughters of S.
