FROM LAST SATURDAY'S SECOND EDITION.
Extra copies of the Weekly Gazette, issued to-day, for sale at this office.
Word was brought to town last evening that Mr.P.C.McKinnie was very ill at Westminster. We hope that by the time this is read he will be out of danger.
"TheLover'sTelephone"is the name of a new kind of candy received by Mr.Langenberger. The mode of manipulating it is thus given: The gentleman commences eating at one end of the stick, the lady at the other end; when they meet in the middle of the stick—"that's where the laugh comes in."
Items from the Downey Courier: The case of Peter Ancos and wife against E.W.Hawkins and wife was decided by a jury in Judge Williams' court, on Wednesday last. This was the second trial, the jury having failed to agree in the first instance. The verdict of the jury was $02 and costs of suit. This action was brought by Ancos and his wife to recover damages for kicking and beating of Mrs.Ancos by Mrs.Hawkina... On Saturday last a school election was held in Malusland district, to vote for or against a tax to build a school house. It was, proall the lovely little valleys to Livermore and Sunol, the hills as well as the valleys themselves are luxurious with volunteer or wild growth—feed and flowers. The eastern side of the hills are more densely covered with grass and flowers than the opposite side. The eschscholtzia (California Poppy) grows here more luxuriantly and dazzles the eye with a splendor not noticed further south. Then comes a long ribbon of the lovely blue Phacelia, then a patch of charming crimson Calandrinia. The singular thing about these different sorts of flowers is that elsewhere they are found growing sociably together in one common field. But here they are very clannish, each kind growing by itself, forming an exquisitively varied carpet which would drive to frenzy any painter that might dare to attempt its reproduction upon canvas. In and around San Jose business shows a marked improvement in comparison with a little more than a year ago. The countenance and gait of people seen upon the streets express more contentment, cheerfulness and hope. There are of course still a few street corner croakers; but their numbers seem to be happily diminished.
Facts of Valueto the Housewife.
That salt will curdle new milk; hence, in preparing milk-porridge, gravies, etc., the salt should not be added until the dish is prepared.
That fresh meat, after beginning to sour, will sweeten if placed out of doors in the cool air over night.
That clear, boiling water will remove tea stains and many fruit stains. Pour the water through the stain, and thus prevent it from spreading over the fabric.
That ripe tomatoes will remove ink and other stains from white cloth, also from the hands.
That a tablespoonful of turpentine boiled with your white clothes will greatly aid the whitening process.
That boiled starch is much improved by the addition of a little sperm, or a little salt, or both; or a little gum Arabic dissolved.
That beeswax and salt will make your rusty flat-irons as clean and smooth as glass. Tie a lump of wax in a rag, and keep it for the purpose. When the irons are hot, rub them first with the wax rag, then scour with a paper or cloth sprinkled with salt.
That blue ointment and kerosene mixed in equal proportions and applied to bedsteads is an unfailing bedbug remedy, and that a coat of whitewash is ditto for the walls of a log house.
That kerosene oil will soften boots or shoes which have been hardened by water and render them as pliable as new.
That kerosene will make your tin kettle as bright as new. Saturate a woolen rag and rub with it. It will also remove stains from and clean varnished furniture.
That cold rain-water and soap will remove machine grease from washable fabrics.

On Saturday last a school election was held in Mainland district, to vote for or against a tax to build a school house. It was proposed to raise $1,200. The tax was defeated by five votes. The school will open next week... Mr. Geo. E. Skidmore wound up his business here this week, and has started with his material for Maricopa, Arizona, where he will open a harness shop.

The Treasurer was ordered to transfer all the money in the different funds to the cash fund. The Board passed a vote of thanks to President Kirby for the fairness and impartiality with which he had provided. The new officials will hold a meeting next week.

"Farming Under the Sea."
The fact is not generally known that within three hours' ride of Boston a large profitable business has been carried on since 1848 along the seashore, and which is nothing more or less than "farming under the sea." Everywhere upon the coast of Eastern New England may be found ten feet below the water mark, the lichen known as carrageen—the "Irish Moss" of commerce. It may be torn from the sunken rocks anywhere, and yet the little seaport of Scituate is almost the only place in the country where it is gathered and cured. This village is the great centre of the most business in the country, and the entire Union draws its supplies from those beaches. Long rakes are used in tilling this marine farm, and it does not take long to fill the many dories that await the lichen, torn from its salty, rocky bed. The husbands and fathers gather the mose from the sea, and the wives and daughters prepare it for market. Soak it in water and it will melt away to jelly. Real it with milk and a delicious white and creamy blanco-mango in the result. The annual product is from ten to fifteen thousand barrels, and it brings $60,000 into the town, which sum is shared by one hundred and fifty families. Its consumption in the manufacture of lager beer is very large, and the entire breweries in the country draw their supplies from Scituate beaches, as the importation from Ireland has almost ceased. It is generally known that the mose, as an article of food, is called "ten mose funia."—Exchange.
Follower's Syrup will display or wash out to hawkins matter, and then cure Consumption. Sold by all druggists.

Consumption
Is not an incurable malady. It is only necessary to have the right remedy, and HALL’S BALSAM is that remedy:
Don’t despair of relief, and HALL’S BALSAM is that remedy:
Don’t despair of relief, and HALL’S BALSAM is that remedy:
BEAD THE FOLLOWING:
Dr. D. D. Wright, of Cincinnati, sends us the subjoined professional endorsement. "I have prescribed Hall’s Balsam in a large number of cases, and always with success." He adds that "In one case a patient with every appearance of confirmed consumption, was restored to his usual health soon after commencing to take the Balsam."
John Kuthn, of Lafayette, Ind., writes: "One year ago I was to all appearances in the last stages of consumption, and got so low our doctor said I could not live 24 hours." Mr. Kuthn further states that "after taking nine bottles of Hall’s Balsam he is now in perfect health, having used no other medicine."
The above brief extracts are taken from a MASS OF EVIDENCE which has been accumulating during a period of 29 years, proving the efficacy of Hall’s Balsam in all cases where the breathing organs are affected, and showing the estimation in which the remedy is held by the public and the medical profession. Sold by all-drugsists. Price, $1 per bottle.
