Diz. New York, April 22. General John A. Diz died last night. Flags are at halfmast to-day in consequence. John A. Diz was a veteran and a versatile politician, as well as a soldier of two wars. He was a native of New Hampshire, and was born July 24, 1798. He served in the war of 1812 as an Ensign and an Adjutant. In 1828 he settled at Cooperstown, N.Y., and blossomed forth as a Democratic politician. From the first success, which continued with but few exceptions, was his lot. As a Democrat he filled the offices of Adjutant General, Secretary of State and Superintendent of Schools of New York State. In 1842 he was elected to the Assembly, and in 1845 chosen to United States Senate. Three years following he was the gubernatorial candidate of the Free-Soil Democrats, but was defeated. For a short time in 1853 he filled the position of Assistant Treasurer of the United States at New York under the administration of Franklin Pierce. In December of 1860, when President Buebanaan was abandoned by the secession members of his Cabinet, Mr. Dix succeeded Howell Cobb as Secretary of the Treasury, a position which he filled until the advent of Mr. Lincoln's administration. It was while in this position that he telegraphed to the Lieutenant of a revenue cutter at New Orleans the memorable words: "If any one attempts to haul down the American flag, shoot him on the spot." In May 1861, he was appointed Major-General of Volunteers. At first he was placed in command of the Department of Maryland, and in 1872 was transferred to Fortress Monroe. In 1863 he commanded in New York during the riots, and at the close of the war was mustered out of the service. Soon after the beginning of the rebellion General Dix left the Democratic party and joined the Republican, and on re-entering civil life drifted back to politics as a profession. In the dispute between Andrew Johnson and the majority in Congress he sided with the President, and was by him first nominated Collector of the Port of New York, and in 1866 Minister to France, which position he resigned in 1868. Four years later he was nominated by the Republicans for Governor of New York, although up to the time of the holding of the Convention his political attitude was so ambiguous that the Democrats had seriously contemplated naming him for that position. He was elected and filled the position with credit and honor, but two years later he was defeated by Samuel J. Tilden. That disaster ruined whatever Presidential aspirations he may have fostered, for his name had been prominently mentioned for the Republican nomination. For many years General Dix was a member of Tammany Society, and for a long time had served in the vestry of Trinity Church, New York, of BANK OF AMERICA Capital Stock, S. H. MOTT B. F. FROM LAST SATURDAY'S SECOND EDITION. — Extra copies of the Weekly Gazette, issued to-day, for sale at this office. — A load of coal from the Black Star mine was received yesterday by Messrs. A. Guy Smith & Co. It is of the very best quality. — The San Francisco Courts have granted V. Wolfenstein a divorce from his wife on the ground of cruelty. Wolfenstein was formerly a photographer in Los Angeles. — As the result of an examination in Judge Bailey's Court yesterday, C. B. Wright was bound over to appear before the Grand Jury on a charge of embezzlement. — A movement is in process of formation by which an emigration society will soon be formed, the objective point of which will be Guatemala. His snakeship was promptly despatched. — As Mr. C. E. Leonard was riding on the San Joaquin rancho a few days ago, he came upon a snake in the act of swallowing a horned toad. He threw a missile at the minister to France, which position he resigned in 1868. For many years General Dix was a member of Tammany Society, and for a long time had served in the vestry of Trinity Church, New York, of which in late years he has been Treasurer, and his son, Rev. Dr. Morgan Dix, is rector. General Dix during his long life always enjoyed good health. It was his custom up to a very recent period to diurnally take long walks, and the veteran's skill in snipe hunting—a sport in which he much indulged—was renowned. King Killing. The attack on the Czar in St. Petersburg adds another to the many recent attempted assassinations of rulers which have given rise to the theory of a King-killing mania. Going back little more than a quarter of a century, we find these attempts including those against the Emperor of France, the King of Prussia, and Queen Victoria, in 1852; the wounding of the Emperor of Austria, and the attempts on Victor Emanuel and Napoleon III., in 1853; the stabbing to death of the Duke of Parma, in 1854; the stabbing of the King of Naples, and the attempts on the Queen of Spain and on Napoleon III., in 1855; on Napoleon III again in 1857, and once more in 1858; the attack on the King of Prussia, by Beker, in 1861; the attacks on the Queen of Greece and Napoleon III., in 1862; the attack on the Czar at St. Petersburg in 1867, followed by another at Paris, in 1869, in which latter year the Khedive of Egypt was assailed and the Prince of Servia killed; the assault on King Amadeus of Spain in 1872, in which year, too, the Earl of Mayo, Governor-General of India, was assassinated; on Emperor William of Germany, in St. Petersburg, in 1873, and again, in 1878, twice in Berlin, by Hoedel and Nobeling; and in the past year, also, the assaults on the Kings of Spain and Italy. If the republics are taken into this portentous list, it will be swelled by the assassinations of President Lincoln in 1865; the Dictator of Bolivia in 1871; Presidents Balta and Pardo of Peru, the one in 1872 and the other in 1874; the President of Paraguay in 1877. It is remarkable that all the attempts on the lives of European sovereigns during the past quarter of the century so very few have been successful. But this fresh attempt, even though a failure, is likely to increase almost to a panic the trepidation that has existed for many months in royal houses. San Francisco, April 19. — A loan was recently made by one of the city banks on country property at ½ per cent. per month, with a stipulation, that in case the vote on the 7th of May showed a majority against the new Constitution, a rebate of ¼ of one per cent. interest would be allowed. A noise in a back room attracted the attention of a clerk in Mr. Cahen's store the other evening, and on investigating he found the cat valiantly defending her kittens against the attacks of a large snake, of the kind commonly called gopher-snake. His snakeship was promptly despatched. As Mr. C. E. Leonard was riding on the San Joaquin rancho a few days ago, he came upon a snake in the act of swallowing a horned toad. He threw a missile at the snake and hit it, which so enraged the reptile that it dropped its prey and "made for" its assailant. The battle which ensued resulted in the death of the snake. The Hawkins family is again in trouble. A female servant, employed by Mrs. Hawkins, entered a complaint against her mistress before Judge Williams, charging that the latter had assaulted and beaten her. A jury trial was had Thursday, but they failed to agree, and another trial will be the result. We understand that a complaint has been laid against Mr. Hawkins, charging him with attempting to shoot a man. Downey Courier. Should this paragraph meet the eye of any of our Eastern readers who desire to pass a pleasant summer in Anaheim, we can assure them that they need have no fear of finding scant comfort or poor accommodations. The Planters' Hotel is as bright and clean as a new dollar, and every department is kept in a scrupulously neat manner. There is not a hotel in Southern California where as many home comforts can be had as in the one presided over by Mr. Dunham, and the invalid, tourist or immigrant will find him a prince of landlords. The debate this evening in Kroeger's Hall promises to be one of unusual interest. The disputants on both sides are men of ability and have studied the new Constitution thoroughly. There is a rumor that Hon. J. P. West, of Compton, one of the delegates to the Convention from this county, will be present and speak in favor of the Constitution. The merits and demerits of the Constitution will be discussed, and not the characters and antecedents of those who support and oppose it. The discussion will begin at half-past seven. Ladies are invited to be present. BANK OF ANAHEIM. Capital Stock, $100,000.00 S. H. MOTT President. B. F. SEIBERT Cashier. DIRECTORS, H. MABURY, E. F. SPENCE, B. F. SEIBERT, S. H. MOTT, O. 8. ERADICATES Coughs, Colds, Pneumonia, Bronchitis, Asthma, Crops, Wheoping Cough, And all Diseases of the Breathing Organs. HALL'S BALSAM IS THE LEADING SPECIFIC FOR CONSUMPTION. It soothes and heals the membrane of the lungs, inflamed and poisoned by the disease, and remedies the night sweats and tightness across the chest, which accompany it. Consumption Is not an incurable malady. It is only necessary to have the right remedy, and HALL'S BALSAM is that remedy. Don't despair of relief, for this benign specific may cure you, even though professional aid falls. READ THE FOLLOWING: Dr. D. D Wright, of Cincinnati, sends us the subjoined professional endorsement. "I have prescribed Hall's Balsam in a large number of cases, and always with success." He adds that "in one case a patient with every appearance of confirmed consumption was restored to his usual health soon after commencing to take the Balsam." John Kuhn, of Lasayette, Ind., writes: "One year ago I was to all appearances in the last stages of consumption, and got as low our doctor said I could not live 24 hours." Mr. Kuhn further states that "after taking nine bottles of Hall's Balsam he is now in perfect health, having used no other medicine." The above brief extracts are taken from a MASS OF EVIDENCE which has been accumulating during a period of 20 years, proving the efficacy of Hall's Balsam in all cases where the breathing organs are affected, and showing the estimation in which the remedy is held by the public and the medical profession.
