WASHINGTON, April 9th.—General Premont of Arizona, now here, says that the Department of the Interior promised to restrict the Pima and Maricopa Indians to a smaller reservation on Salt River than that recently assigned them, and ensures him that it will not in any way interfere with the settlers there. The Department meantime will examine his plan for the removal of all of the Valley Indians of Arizona to the Government Reservation on the Colorado River, towards its mouth, and he has hopes of its adoption.
Fremont has submitted to the Government a plan for bringing the waters of the Gulf of California back to their old basin in Southern California, which would, he says, create an inland sea two hundred miles long, fifty broad, three hundred feet deep, converting a desert waste into a highway for commerce, and greatly improving the climate of Southern Arizona and Southern California. Fremont says he has been successful in awakening the attention of capitalists here to Arizona mining interests, and reports good results to follow.
SALT LAKE, April 7.—Yesterday the semi-annual Conference of the Mormon Church opened in Salt Lake and will continue until Wednesday. The Tabernacle is crowded, and the interest, especially among the women and older members, appears to be unabated. The leading speaker on Saturday was Delegate Cannon, who is on leave of absence from Congress. In the course of his remarks he alluded to polygamy as a remedy for the social evil. He advised marrying often that all women might have husbands. He said he would advise his own daughters to enter polygamy. He knew that he had spoken on a delicate subject, one the Supreme Court was said to have settled, but right, and right only, can settle anything. He said the time would soon come when the Mormons would be in power, and they would no longer be a target for newspapers. A new apostle, in the person of Moses Thatcher, was elected in place of Orson Hyde, deceased.
WASHINGTON, April 9th.—Ex-Governor John C. Brown, Vice-President of the Texas Pacific Railroad, says that no attempt will

FROM LAST SATURDAY'S SECOND EDITION.
Extra copies of the Weekly Gazette,
issued to-day, for sale at this office.
Mrs. Belle Launch, lately editor of the
Ukiiah Democrat, is making arrangements to
start a weekly paper at Maricopa Wells,
Arizona, about the time of the railroad excursion to that place.
As will be seen by an advertisement, the Anaheim Lighter Company propose to apply to the Board of Supervisors for authority to build a wharf about one thousand yards from the present wharf at Anaheim Landing.
The Fireman's Fund Insurance Company, through their agent here, A.W.
Steinhart, is distributing a unique and valuable advertisement. It is a twelve-inch measuring rule—just such a one as will be found handy in every counting-room.
Mr.Victor Montgomery, in a communication to a Los Angeles paper, says that there were "mis-statements" in our article on "Taxation of our Water Companies." Mr.
Montgomery is respectfully tendered the use of our columns to briefly point out the "mis-statements" of which he complains.
WASHINGTON, April 9th.-Ex-Governor John C.Brown, Vice-President of the Texas Pacific Railroad, says that no attempt will be made at this session of Congress for legislation for that company. The railroad has done its best during the last two sessions of Congress to secure favorable legislation, but it did not receive the support from the South that it was entitled to,and if the South wants the railroad it must give some earnest sign of its ability to do something. The movement must,in other words, bear a Southern one,and earnestly led and advocated by Southern men.The railroad company will do all it can.Meanwhile it will continue to build the road in Texas on the main line towards the Rio Grande, and on the triangle from Sherman to Fort Worth.Congress,Governor Brown thinks, will soon regret that it has done nothing to regulate the Southern Pacific of California, inasmuch as it can do nothing now to control that line or protect the Government and the public against its exactionsThere will be no attempt made to build from San Diego at present. The first-mortgage bonds of the Texas Pacific and its stock have gone up,and the business of the road for the present year promises to be enormous.
LOUISVILLE, April 10th.-The Republican State Convention here to-day nominated Walter Evans for Governor. The following was adopted:We have seen with pride and pleasure the distinguished honors paid to ex-President Grant by all classes in Europe. His services in war,and his patriotism and ability in the discharge of the high civil duties to which the confidence of his countrymen repeatedly called him,his wisdom, pruence, moderation, and integrity of character, entitle him to this striking and remarkable exhibition of courtesy and respect abroad and to the lasting gratitude of his own people. His name and fame are inseparably linked with the most important events in our country's historyIt is our pleasure to thus declare our admiration and esteem for him,our gratitude to and confidence in him.
New York, April 9th.-George William Curtis,in Harper's Weekly concerning the statement that Grant is the only candidate who can be elected, says:It is a confession of despair we do not share;and to assert that he is the sole distinctive representative of Republican principles,is to insult Republican intelligence.Hover probable the nomination of Grant may be,它 seems likely that it would chill the sincere part of the opposition to the Democrats, would be accepted with doubt and regret by another part, and women might have advised his own daughters to enter polygamy. He knew that he had spoken on a delicate subject,一the Supreme Court was said to have settled,但 right, and right only,可 settle anything. He said the time would soon come when the Mormons would be in power, and they would no longer be a target for newspapers.A new apostle,in the person of Moses Thatcher, was elected in place of Orson Hyde, deceased.

—Los Angeles Commercial: A recent jaunt through the shady streets of Anaheim surprised us immensely by noting the splendid appearance of the vineyards—one and all—of our sister town. They look clean and fresh and have a luxuriant growth, and our Los Angeles vineyardists could learn much from an examination of them. Evidently the wine business is looking up in Anaheim.
—a patent has been issued by the General Land Office to Pio Pico et al., confirmees for the rancho of Santa Margarita y Las Floreas, covering 133,440 acres in San Diego county, California. The present occupant is Dan Juan Forster. The Secretary of the Interior has also directed the issue of a patent for Rancho Jurupa, in San Bernardino county, to Abel Stearns, the confirmee, in accordance with the survey recommended by Surveyor-General Wagner.
"The Mediterranean Sweet."
Mr. Lelong, nurseryman, of Los Angeles, has received the following letter from Messrs. Elwanger & Barry, of the Mount Hope Nurseries, Rochester, New York, giving the origin and true name of the orange known here as the "Mediterranean Sweet":
DEAR Sir: We received your favor of the 18th of March; also a package containing an orange called the "Mediterranean Sweet," so called by Mr. Garvey, of Los Angeles. This tree was imported by us about nine years ago. We imported it under the name of the "Exquisite." It is thornless, but of a dwarf habit. The rind is thick and it is not seedless, as Mr. Garvey states in his catalogue of Los Angeles. We would recommend the "Navel," it being the best orange grown. This orange is not thornless, but it is entirely seedless. It is called the king of oranges, in large and good, with a fine flavor and thin rind.
NEW YORK, April 9th. —George William Curtis, in Harper's Weekly, concerning the statement that Grant is the only candidate who can be elected, says: It is a confession of despair we do not share; and to assert that he is the sole distinctive representative of Republican principles, is to insult Republican intelligence. However probable the nomination of Grant may be, it seems likely that it would chill the sincere part of the opposition to the Democrats, would be accepted with doubt and regret by another part, and would be really welcome only to a third part.
NEW YORK, April 10. —The Herald says: There are some glorious advantages, aside from commercial considerations, to be gained by the flooding of the Colorado desert, which Governor Fremont proposes for Arizona. Some millions of rattlesnakes would be put where they would do the most good; a thousand or two very bad Indians and Mexicans might do the world an inestimable service by being drowned unawares, and the authors of Far West literature for boys would lose so much of their favorite territory that they might be discouraged into silence.
ROSS, April 7. —A letter from Cardinal Vicar is published, complaining bitterly of the existence in Rome of Protestant schools, supported chiefly by foreign money. It announces that the Pope has appointed a Vigilance Committee to increase and improve the Catholic schools, and appeals to the nobility and the clergy to subscribe to their support.
"Bro Haskell," a "reformed" circus performer, is drawing crowds at Amboy, Ill., preaching revival sermons. Here is a specimen of his eloquence, as quoted by our old friend Judge Frost, of the Belle Plaine Union:
"Stand away, brethern and sisters!" the evangelist shouts, as the saints gather around a sinner stricken down (as they say, with the Holy Ghost). "Let the angels come in and fan him."
"Bless God! I feel as if a quarter section of heaven had caved in, and all the stars were tumbling down on me!"
"You Christians are like young pigs. I have to pull your ears off to get you up to the gospel trough, and after you have got a taste of the glories, nearly pull your tails off to get you away."
Kearney would be a relief after that man.

A CONQUERER OF CONSUMPTION!
Hall’s BALSAM
FOR THE LUNGS
ERADICATES
Coughs, Colds: Pneumonia, Bronchitis,
Asthma. Croup, Whooping Cough,
And all Diseases of the Breathing Organs.
HALL’S BALSAM
IS THE LEADING SPECIFIC FOR CONSUMPTION.
It soothes and heals the membrane of the lungs, inflamed and poisoned by the disease, and remedies the night sweats and tightness across the chest, which accompany it.
Consumption
Is not an incurable malady. It is only necessary to have the right remedy, and HALL’S BALSAM is that remedy.
Don’t despair of relief, for this benign specific may cure you, even though professional fails.
READ THE FOLLOWING:
Dr. D. D. Wright, of Cincinnati, sends us the subjoined professional endorsement: "I have prescribed Hall’s balsam in a large number of cases, and always with success." He adds that "in one case a patient with every appearance of confirmed consumption, was restored to his usual health soon after commencing to take the Balsam."
John Kuhn, of Lafayette, Ind., writes: "One year ago I was to all appearances in the last stages of consumption, and got so low our doctor said I could not live 24 hours." Mr. Kuhn further states that "after taking nine bottles of Hall’s Balsam he is now in perfect health, having used no other medicine."
The above brief extracts are taken from a MASS OF EVIDENCE
which has been accumulating during a period of 20 years, proving the efficacy of Hall’s Balsam in all cases where the breathing organs are affected, and showing the estimation in which the remedy is held by the public and the medical profession. Sold by all druggists. Price $1 per bottle.
