His Objections.
The following is a synopsis of an address delivered by Grove L. Johnson before the Republican Club at Sacramento. Speaking of the new Constitution he stated his objections to it, which were in brief: First, because Kearney has pronounced in favor of it, and because his paper supported it. Second, it legislates bold-over Senators out of office, elected for four years, and punishes them to satisfy the personal pique of the cuts. Third, because all that is good in the new Constitution is in the Code formed under the old Constitution. It strikes out the old clause that taxation shall be equal and uniform. It strikes down the present school system. It speaks of common and public schools in the same breath, and opens up a question for the Courts to decide what such schools are. It makes a boundless chasm between free schools and the University, which is set apart, and can be availed of only by the rich, unless local communities support the intermediate schools between grammar schools and University. It abolishes uniformity in text-books and compels men to buy for their children new sets of books in every county they go to, or creates that liability. It abolishes evening schools, as no State money from the School Fund can go to any but the primary and grammar schools. It abolishes the present judiciary system for one new and untried, and mingles probate, criminal and civil business in one Court. It provides that men may be imprisoned in civil actions for damages—a dangerous and fearful power to give, and which the present Constitution positively prohibits. It provides that religious teaching shall be excluded from one kind of schools only, and leaves all others open for the entanglement of church ambition. It sets up an aristocracy by permitting certain offices to be filled only by property-holders—not only that, but by tree-holders only. It prevents communities, even in the greatest emergencies, from using the money of the community to save itself, as if a city is attacked by flood no money can be used to resist it except the officers do it out of their own pockets. It forces the State to set all convicts at work, and throws them into com-

San Burnaventura, March 28. At the opening of the Court this morning, Judge Granger, acting as District Attorney, moved that the remaining prisoners, Hunt, Lord and McCartt, charged with the murder of T. Wallace More, be dismissed on the following grounds: First, because the State is taken by surprise at the conduct of the State's evidence, Jesse M. Jones, who has broken faith with the State; second, because, while the State can corroborate Jones, it has not sufficient evidence without him to convict; third, that the Court having held Austin Brown to be an accomplice the State has not now evidence sufficient to corroborate him and convict the prisoners. Thereupon the Court ordered the prisoners discharged, and they left the Court-room amid congratulations of their friends after an imprisonment of one year to a day, they having been arrested March 27, 1878.
Many of the counties of California have Spanish names, but few people know what they mean. The following from the Sacramento Bee will give the meaning to many of them: Alameda, popular grove, public walk; Amador, a lover, a sweetheart; Calaveras, madcaps, wild, hot-brained fellows; Contra Costa, a coast opposite to another; El Dorado may be freely translated as the golden land; Fresno, ash tree; Los Angeles, angels; Marin, by the sea; Mariposa, butterfly; Merced, gift, grace, mercy; Mono, neat and pretty; Monterey, the King's mountain; Nevada, snowy; Plumas, feathers; Sacramento, the Sacrament; San Benito, St. Benedict; San Bernardino, St. Bernard; San Francisco, St. Francis; San Joaquin, St. Joachim; San Lus Obispo, Saint Louis Bishop; San Mateo, Saint Matthew; Santa Barbara and Santa Clara are easily translated; Santa Cruz, holy cross; Sierra mountains; Solano, easterly wind; Ventura fortune, venture, luck.

Hall’s BALSAM
FOR THE LUNGS
ERADICATES
Coughs, Colds, Pneumonia, Bronchitis.
Asthma, Group, Whoooping Cough.
And all Diseases of the Breathing Organs.
HALL’S BALSAM
IS THE LEADING SPECIFIC FOR CONSUMption.
It soothes and heals the membrane of the lungs, inflamed and poisoned by the disease, and reminds the night sweats and puffiness across the chest, which accompany it.
Consumption
Is not an unstable malady. It is only necessary to have the right remedy, and HALL’S BALSAM is that remedy.
I don’t despair of relief; for this benign specific may cure you, even though professional aid fails.
READ THE FOLLOWING:
Dr. D. D Wright, of Cincinnati, sends us the sublime professional endorsement. "I have prescribed Hall’s Balsam in a large number of cases, and always with success." He adds that "in one case a patient with every appearance of confirmed consumption, was restored to his usual health soon after commencing to take the Balsam.
John Kulnin, of Lafayette, Ind., writes: "One year ago I was to all appearances in the last stages of consumption, and got so how our doctor said I could not live 24 hours." Mr. Kulnin further states that "after taking the bottles of Hall’s Balsam he is now in perfect health, having used no other medicine."
The above brief extracts are taken from a MASS OF EVIDENCE,
which has been accumulating during a period of 29 years, proving the efficacy of Hall’s Balsam in all cases where the breathing organs are affected, and showing the estimation in which the remedy is held by the public and the medical profession. Sold by all drugists. Price: $1 per bottle.
