No profession that we are aware of has made greater strides toward perfection in the past few years than has dentistry. A visit to a well-appointed dentist's office, like Dr. Cowan's, where all the modern appliances are used, will convince one that the profession is not second to that of medicine itself; indeed, a graduate of a dental college is now required to pass an examination in matters which would appear to belong exclusively to the medical profession. Dr. Cowan is a graduate of the best dental college in the United States, and his work has proven so satisfactory that he numbers among his patrons persons from nearly every part of the county.
A correspondent of a contemporary, writing from Trabusa Canyon, says that he is tired of packing his honey in old coal oil cans and whisky barrels, and that he wishes some one would start a cooper shop and supply barrels similar to those used by San Diego beekeepers. For his information we will state that the barrels used in San Diego, and quite generally throughout this county, are made by Mr. C. Wille, an Anaheim cooper, who makes them in such large quantities that any effort to compete with him must prove a failure.
We hope the lecture by Rev. Mr. Hill on next Thursday evening will be listened to by a large audience. The subject is one upon which the lecturer has devoted much thought and research, and it will be as entertaining as instructive. There will be a lecture also on the evening of February 11th, at Kroeger's Hall, by Rev. E. Halliday. Subject, "The Philosophy of Self-Culture." The proceeds will be applied to a benevolent object. Everyone should buy a ticket.
Mr. Edward Evey having suggested to Dennis Kearney that Mr. J. H. Butler, of Los Angeles, would be a competent manager of the Party's affairs in this county, Mr. Kearney communicated his desire for Butler's appointment to the Los Angeles Club, which promptly conferred upon him the office of "organizer of our party" for this county in the coming elections for this State, in all its various political actions."

So assured are the managers of the Masquerade Ball that the attendance will justify a little extra outlay, that they propose to decorate the hall in a manner never before attempted, and after plans received from San Francisco Every day brings assurances that the party will be an unbounded success Some of the costumes, we know, will be rich beyond all expectation.
We saw yesterday one of those $100 Eastern-built buggies, which needed the firm embrace of several strands of hay rope to hold it together If there is any moral to this it is that for a good article you must pay a good price; and that a buggy built by local mechanics will outwear any Eastern-made vehicle.
An advertisement from M.A.Mendelson of the Merchant Tailoring Emporium came in last evening, too late for insertion Mr.Mendelson draws attention to some of the new goods he has received, and adverts to the fact that the war on high prices which he inaugurated is in no way abated.
Charcoal and Lime for Poultry.
These two articles play a very important part in the management of fowls, whether bred in a fancier's yard or on a farm.Charcoal should be liberally fed, for no one thing is more productive of health than is this It should be broken in small lumps and put where the fowls can get at it, and they will eat it with great relish We have seen it fed to pigs with the very best results, and those which were treated to it were never troubled with disease or sickness, while neighboring ones were This helps to prove its value, not only for swine but for fowls Where the birds are kept in confinement, it is a very good plan to keep a small trough in a sheltered place, full of small bits of small charcoal, and the fowls will soon learn to help themselves. The value of lime in the form of whitewash is well known, and those who use it liberally are the ones to keep their flocks healthy and cleanly. To render the whitewash more effective in dialogging driving away or destroying lice and other parasitic nuisances, the addition of a little carbolic acid is invaluable, for scarceely anything else seems to be more distasteful to the vermin Air-slacked lime should be occasionally scattered over the floor of the chicken-house to remove unhealthy and unpleasant odors, while a little of it should be scattered around the yards and runs, fork material for egg-shells Oyster-shell lime is the

A mouse-colored horse, 14½ hands high, black legs, tail and head, strayed from his stable on the night of the 30th. The finder will please return it to this office.
Messrs. A. Guy Smith & Co. have received the contract to furnish to the Anaheim Water Company 92,000 feet of lumber, to be used in making the connecting ditch.
Hardly a week passes without additions being made to the extensive assortment of dry goods kept by Messrs. Goodman & Rimpan.
The Episcopal Social on Thursday evening was numerously attended. The performance of an impromptu charade made much amusement. It is intended to reproduce another at the next meeting on Feb. 20.
Mr. John P. Zeyn returned from San Francisco on Wednesday. He confirms the view heretofore expressed in those columns that this section of the State is attracting great attention, because of the superior agricultural prospects of the present season.
The increase in attendance on the public schools lately has compelled the trustees to decide upon employing an additional teacher. The fourth room in the new school house will be furnished and the new department inaugurated in about a month.
Miles Broa intend the coming season to plant a part of their 400-acre tract north of town in orange trees. It is within the range of possibility that they will yet carry out their original scheme of laying out wide avenues through the tract and border them with evergreen shade trees.
Agricultural Changes in Virginia.
Here in Virginia a slow but steady revolution is going on, and it is odd that it does not affect the prosperity of the State more than at present it can be said to do. This revolution is the decay and ruin of the large estates which flourished, under the old regime, and the substitution of small farms for them. This is the great and important change which has resulted from the war, and it is as inevitable as death and taxes. In France such a revolution was attended with great violence and massacre, and was accomplished suddenly. Taine says that the salient fact of the French Revolution is that it was a violent and forcible transfer of landed property from one class to another. The change goes on more peacefully and slowly here, but none the less certainly. In the tide-water counties, I hear, the populations once content to win a precarious living by "oystering" and fishing and then idling away all the rest, are turning their attention to small farms, and find that it pays much better. But while there is a very large class of Virginians which has settled down to the safe and profitable existence of small farmers, there are thousands of men young and old who are in an uncertain state. They cannot make up their minds to the changed order of things, although their consciences tell them they ought so to do. To leage the State does not always help them, for the old proverb, "On tum sum enim manum ete," holds forever good. "There are 17,000 Virginians in Baltimore, and all poor," said a Richmond gentleman to me yesterday, with a little despair in his voice; "what good can it do the rest of us to migrate!"—Edward King in the Boston Journal.

READ THE FOLLOWING:
Dr. D. D. Wright, of Cincinnati, sends us the subjoined professional endorsement. "I have prescribed Hall's Balsam in a large number of cases, and always with success." He adds that "it is one use a patient with every appearance of confirmed consumption, was restored to his usual health soon after driftingeting to take the Balsam."
John Kuhn, of Lafayette, Ind., writes: "One year ago I was to all appearances in the last stages of consumption, and got no low our doctor said I could not live 24 hours." Mr. Kuhn further states that "after taking nine bottles of Hall's Balsam he is now in perfect health, having used no other medicine."
