Items from the Downey City Courier,
Some one entered the back door of the post office a short time since, and stole sixty dollars in coin. Nothing else was disturbed,
and no elue has ever been obtained....We learn that Mr.Hawkins has in constant employment on his farm near old Los Nietos,17 men.The farm is said to embrace ninety acres of land.A barn has been constructed which is without doubt the finest in Southern California, and it is reported that Mr.Hawkins contemplates the erection of a $25,000 mansion shortly. The grounds are laid out and profusely ornamented with statues,
etc.Quite a number of carpenters are constantly employed.Mr.Hawkins is frequently adding to his farm by purchase of small tracts adjoining, and will soon have an extensive and beautiful estate.Several artesian wells furnish an abundance of water.
An inmate of the County Hospital named Hanslet, deaf and dumb, committed suicide last Wednesday by cutting his throat with a knife.
An old man,who had permission from
from Wm. Niles, of Los Angeles, a large supply of "American Poultry Food." It is said to be the very best food which can be given to young chickens.
—M. A. Mendelson, of the Merchant Tailoring Emporium, has for sale colored fashion plates, showing various handsome maquerade costumes for ladies. They are valuable aids to getting up a historical costume.
—The divorce case of Layman vs. Layman, tried before Judge Sepulveda with closed doors the other day, was yesterday decided in favor of the defendant, Mrs. Layman, the Court awarding her alimony and the custody of the children.
—Yesterday afternoon as Mr. Mitchell was leading a horse, about five miles from town, the rope in some way got under the tail of the animal he was riding. This caused it to "buck," and Mr. Mitchell was thrown. His boot caught in the stirrup, and he was dragged some distance. Fortunately the boot was a large one, and soon came off, otherwise he would in all likelihood have been killed. As it is, he is very badly bruised.
—Property owners on the principal streets will be called upon in a few days to sign the deeds conveying to the town sufficient land for sidewalks. Uniformity in sidewalks is not only necessary for the comfort of pedestrians, but it also marks the progressive town. It is hoped that all will see the benefit of acquiring in this request of the Trustees to improve the appearance of the town, and that the deeds will be signed without demur.
—The Board of Town Trustees held a meeting yesterday, at which it was resolved to purchase land from Mr. M. Offinger, on which to build a reservoir. The land is 100 x216 feet (half an acre), and the price $25. There are same buildings on it which will have to be removed, which will add $30 or $40 to the cost. The Board will meet again on the 29th inst., and they will then take the necessary steps to solicit proposals for building the reservoir and laying the pipe. Action in the matter of publishing the delinquent tax list was postponed for two weeks, in consequence of the sickness of the Marshal.

A CONQUERER OF CONSUMPTION!
Hall's BALSAM
FOR THE LUNCH
ERADICATES
Cough, Cells, Passionism, Brenchitis,
Nightma, Group, Weeping Cough,
And all Diseases of the Breathing Organs.
HALL'S BALSAM
IS THE LEADING SPECIFIC FOR CONSUMPTION.
It soothes and heals the membrane of the lungs, inflamed and poisoned by the disease, and remedies the night sweats and tightness across the chest, which accompany it.
Consumption
Is not an incurable malady. It is only necessary to have the right remedy, and HALL's BALSAM is that remedy.
Don't despair of relief, for this benign specific may cure you, even though professional aid falls.
READ THE FOLLOWING:
Dr. D. D. Wright, of Cincinnati, sends us the subjoined professional endorsement. "I have prescribed Hall's Balsam in a large number of cases, and always with success." He adds that "in one case a patient with every appearance of confirmed constipation, was restored to his usual health soon after commencing to take the Balsam."
John Kuhn, of Lafayette, Ind., writes: "One year ago I was to all appearances in the last stages of consumption, and got so low our doctor said I could not live 24 hours." Mr. Kuhn further states that "after taking nine bottles of Hall's Balsam he is now in perfect health, having used no other medicine."
The above brief extracts are taken from a MASS OF EVIDENCE which has been accumulating during the period of 20 years, proving the efficacy of Hall's Balsam in all cases where the breathing organs are affected, and showing the estimation in which the remedy is held by the public and the medical profession. Sold for all drug prices. Price $1 per bottle.
