OMAH, Neb., Dec. 12th.—Two suspected cattle thieves named Mitchell and Ketchum had a fight a few days ago with four besters who were trying to arrest them, on South Loup Fork, in Custer county. During the fight Stevens, one of the herders, was shot and instantly killed. Mitchell and Ketchum escaped and were soon after arrested. As the Sheriff and a guard of several men were taking the prisoners to a place of safe-keeping on Tuesday, it being feared that the cattle herder would lynch him, and, sure enough, while they were en route, a body of twenty or thirty masked men, mounted and armed, corralled the whole party, and, under cover of cucked rifles took the prisoners from the Sheriff and guards, and disappeared with them. Yesterday the bodies of Mitchell and Ketchum were found burned almost beyond recognition at the foot of a tree to which they had evidently been tied while a fire was built around them and they were burned to death.
SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 13.—A complaint was sworn out in the Police Court yesterday by Wm. L. Reed against Loring Pickering, George K. Fitch and A. F. T. Worley, charging them with the publication of libellous matter concerning the conduct of complainant as one of the jurors in the recent Placerville libel suits against the Chronicle. Bonds were filed in the sum of $1,000 each.
CHICAGO, Dec. 13.—A prominent member of the Board of Trade has received a letter from a relative residing at Odessa, Russia, the principal grain port of that country. He complains of the complete prostration of business in city and country, and of the deplorable condition of Russian finances generally. Labor is unemployed. Russian paper—the rouble—which before the war was worth 80 to 82 cents, has sunk in value to 50 cents, silver. Prime Odessa wheat can be purchased at 50@56c per bushel. One of the causes of these extremely low figures is that freights on grain to Europe have risen from 14s to 36s per ton. The writer concludes by saying he considers that Russia, so far as her capacity for carrying on an aggressive war is concerned, is crippled for years. She cannot obtain the means for carrying on such a con-

—The receipts at the Episcopal Fair were nearly $200. This will reduce the debt on the church to about $225.
—Mr.R.H.Gilman got back last night from his trip to Healdsburg, Sonoma county.
—The new Common Council of Los Angeles elected S.J.Bek as President and W.W.Robinson, Clerk.
—It is said that three boys yesterday picked up on the streets $10,$5 and 50 cents, respectively, the two first-named amounts being gold pieces. But then our reporter's informant may have been giving him taffy.
—E.W.Hawkins, charged with furious and reckless driving, has had three trials before the Downey Justice of the Peace, but the jury disagreed every time. A fourth trial is set for next Wednesday.
—Heavy frosts are now of frequent occurrence. On Wednesday night of this week the cold was very severe. Ice a quarter of Puma wereiness in city and country, and of the deplorable condition of Russian finances generally.Labor is unemployed. The office of the Chinese Consul, F.A.Bee, was opened in San Francisco on Thursday with much ceremony.
The San Francisco Chronicle thinks it probable that the Workingmen's party will nominate a full and distinct State ticket for the September election.
The Standard estimates that there are from 600 to 800 houses in the town of Bodie, against 100 last spring. The town appears to be growing.
Paper teeth are a new invention in Germany, and a number of specimens were displayed at the paper exhibition in Berlin They are warranted fully as durable as any other teeth.
Congressman Powers, of Maine, thinks the next Republican candidate for Governor will be Engene Hale, and the Governor elected by the Legislature this year,Garcelon, the Democratic candidate.
The old story, told again in the Tucson Citizen: "The residents of Globe District have circulated a petition, which has been generally signed, asking the authorities at Washington for another slice of the San Carlos Indian Reservation."
Mr.Ethson is not able to prevent the noise on the elevated railway. He has a contrivance to stop the noise, and he has discovered where the noise comes from and knows where it goes to,但 don't appear to find any place between to put the machine.
At a trial of speed between Rarus and Sweetzer in Stockton on Thursday, the first named horse made the second heat in 2:14;the fastest time ever made in the State.Goldsmith Maid's record in California was 2:14.
NEW YORK, Dec. 13.-A friend of Bayard Taylor writes from Dresden that Taylor is hopelessly sick with dropsy. He states that a fortnight ago fifteen quarts of water were taken from him and the operation was subsequently repeated.
A late eastern exchanges says: "Eighty tons of American honey in the comb recently shipped to Liverpool, reached there in perfect order. The honey was contained in glass hives in which it had been deposited by the bees. The Palm Mall Gazette says:"There seems to be no limit to the provisions with which America is prepared to supply us.The first experiment of bringing honey in the comb on a large scale to Europe from America having proved successful,它 will no doubt be repeated."

—Messrs. P. H. Look & Co., have in their shop a very fine-looking lot of sugar-cured hams and bacon, which were only taken from the brine a few days ago. This enterpising firm intend to make large quantity of bacon this season; and, taking the lot now on hand as a sample, they will have no trouble in finding a market for all they make.
—On Thursday night and yesterday the wind blew with great violence, and the accompanying dust made the day as disagreeable a one as any within the memory of "the oldest inhabitant." Many signs were blown down in town, but the only extensive damage done was the destruction of the tin roofing on the east side of the Planters' Hotel. The whole side is completely stripped of tin, and greater damage would have been done had Mr. Fesenfelt not secured the flying fragments of roof with ropes. It is probable that some damage was done to unprotected orchards.
SPRINGFIELD (Ohio), Nov. 23. —One of our fashionable colored barbers, Donn Bazy, has adopted the bell punch in his establishment to record the work done, each barber ringing the punch for every shave, hair-cut or shampoo. To-day while all the barbers were absent at dinner save Long Wiley, the latter fell asleep. Some practical jokers, seeing him asleep, and knowing of the system, slipped in, secured the machine, punched about twenty-five shaves, and quietly retired. This evening, when the time came for settlement, twenty-five shaves were punched that were not paid for. Suspicion at once fastened on Wiley, and as he could not account for the discrepancy, a quarrel ensued. His fellow barbers fell upon Wiley and beat him brutally, so much so that he will die.
A late eastern exchange says: "Eighty tons of American honey in the comb recently shipped to Liverpool, reached there in perfect order. The honey was contained in glass hives in which it had been deposited by the bees. The Pall Mall Gazette says: 'There seems to be no limit to the provisions with which America is prepared to supply us. The first experiment of bringing honey in the comb on a large scale to Europe from America having proved successful, it will no doubt be repeated."
A correspondent of the Riverside Press says: I have experimented with a view of harvesting a supply of lime juice while the limes are in their prime and cheap. I find that one part lime juice to two parts of honey forms a compound that will keep, if bottled and sealed. When diluted to suit the taste it forms a very pleasant drink, and is useful in a hundred different ways (more or less) for culinary purposes. It is much more convenient when prepared thus than to have to press out the juice every time one wants a cooling drink. Some people whose tastes are averse to honey would prefer sugar; at all events we would suggest to all who are fond of acid drinks to harvest a supply of this material for this delicious and healthful drink.
A big dog is one of the performers in "Tina, the Milk Vender," a play in which Lina Tetterhom is starring through the country. He draws a milk cart, and is so well trained that his intelligent acting is an attractive feature of the entertainment. When the comedian enters and says, "Hartina, are you here?" the dog understands that he is to stand still until Hartina and her lover embrace and sing a duet; then he follows Hartina off the stage. In Milwaukee where there is a large German element, the play was performed one evening in the German language. "The dog," according to a writer whose veracity we have no right to question, "understands English thoroughly, but, having had only the advantage of a single rehearsal in German, he became somewhat mixed as to his business, not understanding the language, and, of course, mistaking his one. So when instead of the familiar words, Hartina are you here? he heard, 'Hartina bist du hier?' he sprang for the comedian, who took fright and ran. The dog, spying theprompt seated in his half moon, made a plunge for him.The prompt dived through the trap door. The dog went after him, followed by the milk wagon and what was left of the cans.Seizing the tailboard of the cart, some of the persons on the stage gave a strong pull, and a pull all together, when up came the wagon, the dog,and finally the prompt, the latter with the fangs of the infuriated animal fastened to that part of his garment which had been the last to disappear."

A CONQUERER OF CONSUMPTION!
Hall’s BALSAM
FOR THE LUNGS.
ERADIGATES
Coughs, Colds, Pneumonia, Bronchitis,
Asthma, Crops, Whoooping Cough,
And all Diseases of the Breathing Organs.
HALL’S BALSAM
IS THE LEADING SPECIFIC FOR CONSUMPTION.
It soothes and heals the membrane of the lungs, inflamed and poisoned by the disease, and remedies the night sweats and tightness across the chest, which accompany it.
Consumption
Is not an incurable malady. It is only necessary to have the right remedy, and HALL’S BALSAM is that remedy.
Don’t despair of relief, for this benign specific may cure you, even though professional aid fails.
READ THE FOLLOWING:
Dr. D. D. Wright, of Cincinnati, sends us the submitted professional endorsement. "I have prescribed Hall’s Balsam in a large number of cases, and always with success." He adds that "in one case a patient with every appearance of confirmed consumption, was restored to his usual health soon after commencing to take the Balsam."
John Kuhn, of Lafayette, Ind., writes: "One year ago I was to all appearances in the last stages of consumption, and got so low our doctor said I could not live 24 hours." Mr. Kuhn further states that "after taking nine bottles of Hall’s Balsam he is now in perfect health, having used no other medicine."
The above brief extracts are taken from a MASS OF EVIDENCE which has been accumulating during a period of 20 years, proving the efficacy of Hall’s Balsam in all cases where the breathing organs are affected; and showing the estimation in which the remedy is held by the public and the medical profession. Sold by all druggists. Price, $1 per bottle.
