The Board of Town Trustees held a meeting yesterday afternoon. Meersa Cohen and Yocum were appointed a committee to purchase buckets, rope and hand hooks for the use of the fire department, the cost not to exceed $55. The petition of citizens on West street to have the street graded, was referred to the Committee on Public Improvements. The following was adopted, "Resolved That the matter of introducing water into the town be referred to the Committee on Public Improvements to ascertain the probable cost and best means to secure that end, and to report at the next general meeting; and further, that the President be added to that committee." The Marshal was instructed to collect taxes until January 1st, without exacting the additional 5 per cent. The Clerk was instructed to inquire of Tax Collector Kremer if the citizens of Anaheim are charged with county road tax. The Marshal was ordered to either collect the dog tax or kill the dogs.
A dispatch dated Philadelphia December 5th, says: The new iron steamship State of California, built for the Pacific Coast Steamship Company, was successfully launched this morning from the ship-yard of the Messrs. Uramps. There was a larger attendance of spectators than at any previous launch. There were six hundred guests on board and the wharves and vessels in the vicinity were crowded with spectators. The steamer was christened by the daughter of W. F. Lockard, Superintendent of the Philadelphia division of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Charles W. Pusey was present as the Superintending Engineer of the Pacific Coast Steamship Company; and Samuel Archibald as agent for the English Lloyds, under whose rules the ship was constructed. The California is 320 feet long, 37 feet beam, 26 feet depth of hold.
Mr. Thos. S. Hall, Deputy Collector Internal Revenue, was in town yesterday. Mr. Hall is a prominent member of Frank Bartlett Post, G. A. K., and is anxious to increase its membership and usefulness by additions from this part of the county. [FROM LAST SATURDAY'S SECOND EDITION.] —Mr. A.G. Beebo is fitting up his store very tastily, and he will soon display a fine lot of new goods.
Capt. L.F.Rucker, a former resident of Los Angeles, died at Kansas City, Mo., on Nov. 12th.
Mr.H.Paty has closed a contract with the Los Angeles Gas Company to haul 200 tons of brea to the Anaheim depot. He brought in his first load yesterday.
Vineyardists are beginning to complain of the cost of getting back their empty pipes. The steamer tariff has been raised to $125 a pipe. Lighterage is 75 cents and hauling 50 cents, which brings it up to $250.
Messrs.A.Guy Smith & Co. offer for sale a large comfortable house and lot for $700, and only require a cash payment of $100 down, the balance to be paid in monthly installments of $12. As this is little more than would be exacted for rent, it will be seen that a favorable opportunity is presented to
Paul de Cassagnac has fought in all seventeen duels, not one of which, however, has been fatal. On the occasion of his meeting with Aurelien Scholl, the high road of St.Denis was the spot selected, 2 o'clock in the afternoon the time. A crowd quickly assembled, and the combatants were about to commence, when a gendarme made his appearance. However, instead of making an arrest, the executive officer drew his sword, and, addressing himself to the spectators cried: "Hats off, gentlemen! When there is fighting in France, one uncovers." Poor Scholl received terrible wounds, but he is still alive and well, on excellent terms with his old adversary and editor of the Voltaire. M.Paul de Cassagnac then fought Henri Rocheford, and afterward his own cousin, Lissagaray, who did all he could to kill the Imperialist champion. After having been touched four times in the face, Lissagaray lost his head and flung himself on the sword of his adversary. He had hardly recovered when he again challenged M.Paul de Cassagnac, who refused on the following terms: "Since I fought with you and left you riddled like a strainer in the garden at Vesinet, I have reflected that it is sufficient to have been your
Legal Decisions About Newspapers
1. Subscribers who do not give express notice to the contrary are considered as wishing to continue their subscriptions.
2. If subscribers wish their papers discontinued, publishers may continue to send them until charges are paid.
3. If subscribers neglect or refuse to take their papers from the office or place to which they are sent, they are held responsible until they settle their bills and give due notice to discontinue.
4. If subscribers move to other places without informing the publisher, and the paper is sent to the former direction, they are held responsible. Notice should always be given of the removal.
5. Any person who takes a paper regularly from the postoffice—whether directed to his name or another's, or whether he has subscribed or not—is responsible for the payment.
6. The courts have decided that refusing to take a paper from the office, or removing and leaving it uncalled for, is prima facie evidence of intentional fraud.

Our advertising columns this morning contain the announcement of a ball to be given by the Anaheim Brass Band on New Year's Eve., Dec. 31st. As we have heretofore remarked, the readiness with which the band has always responded when called upon on behalf of any entertainment of a public character, should insure them a substantial benefit.
Kroeger's Hall was filled at the School Exhibition last night, and at an early hour "standing room only" was announced. We have only time to say that the entertainment was very thoroughly enjoyed, and the efforts of the school children met with a demonstrative appreciation. The lateness of the hour compels us to defer an extended notice of the entertainment until next issue.
Mr. Hippolyte Cahen desires to draw public attention to the fine line of fancy chinaware, crockery and plated ware that he is now unpacking, confident that it is in every respect superior to any heretofore brought to this market. These goods are specially intended as presents for the holidays, and no more appropriate or useful gifts could be found anywhere.
Mr. T. A. Darling, agent at the railroad depot, says that the shipments for the past few weeks have been unprecedentedly heavy. For over a week past an average of three carloads of wine and grain has been shipped every morning. The shipments from Anaheim depot are from one-half to two-thirds greater than the exports from any other point on the San Diego branch, and still every available warehouse is filled to the rafters with grain, awaiting a rise in the market.

A CONQUERER OF CONSUMPTION!
Hall’s BALSAM
FOR THE LUNGS.
ERADICATES
Coughs, Colds, Pneumonia, Bronchitis,
Asthma, Crep, Whooping Cough,
And all Diseases of the Breathing Organs.
HALL’S BALSAM
IS THE LEADING SPECIFIC FOR CONSUMPTION.
It soothes and heals the membrane of the lungs, inflamed and poisoned by the disease, and remedies the night sweats and tightness across the chest, which accompany it.
Consumption
Is not an incurable analogy. It is only necessary to have the right remedy, and HALL’S BALSAM is that remedy.
Don’t despair of relief, for this benign specific may cure you, even though professional aid fails.
READ THE FOLLOWING:
Dr. D. D. Wright, of Cincinnati, sends us the submitted professional endorsement. "I have prescribed Hall’s talsam in a large number of cases, and always with success." He adds that "in one case a patient with every appearance of confirmed consumption, was restored to his usual health soon after commencing to take the Balsam."
John Kuhn, of Lafayette, Ind., writes: "One year ago I was to all appearances in the last stages of consumption, and got so low our doctor said I could not live 24 hours." Mr. Kuhn further states that "after taking nine bottles of Hall’s Balsam he is now in perfect health, having used no other medicine."
The above brief extracts are taken from a MASS OF EVIDENCE which has been accumulating during a period of 29 years, proving the efficacy of Hall’s Balsam in all cases where the breathing organs are affected, and showing the estimation in which the remedy is held by the public and the medical profession. Sold by all druggists. Price, $1 per bottle.
