Among the guests last winter in the hotel at Chestnut and Nineteenth streets, Philadelphia, formerly known as the old Rush mansion, were Mrs. Rowland, a member of a well-known family in the Quaker City, and a Miss Burgoyne, a brilliant conversationalist. Between her and Mrs. Rowland a warm friendship sprang up. Mrs. Rowland, who intended making an extended European tour, proposed that Miss Burgoyne should accompany herself and daughter, Mrs. Lippincott, Mrs. Rowland to bear one-half of Miss Burgoyne's expenses. The invitation was accepted, and in May last Mrs. Rowland, Mrs. Lippincott, and Miss Burgoyne sailed for Europe. In England Mrs. Rowland and her daughter noticed that at times their companion behaved strangely. She conceived the notion that she was a blood relative of some of the most distinguished families in Great Britain. Mrs. Rowland learning that several persons of that name were conspicuous in ecclesiastical circles in the British Isles, credited Miss Burgoyne's averments, but fancying that probably there was a coldness between them on account of differences of social standing, she paid little attention to what Miss Burgoyne said concerning them. After a short stay in England, the party went to the Continent, and while there Mrs. Rowland, who did not so much as dream of Miss Burgoyne's hallucination, was subjected to many alarming and disagreeable experiences. It turned out that Miss. Burgoyne was in reality demented, and in her mania she fancied Mrs. Rowland to be insane. It further appeared that Miss Burgoyne imagined that Mrs. Rowland had an impression that she (Miss Burgoyne) was out of her mind. And, as events proved, Miss Burgoyne was not slow in making others acquainted with her impressions. Mrs. Rowland, finding persons seemingly avoiding her, was for a time at a loss to understand it. But her mind was soon relieved. While she was seated alone in her apartments in a hotel in Germany, TOWN BOARD OF TRUSTEES. I. W. Kirby, Chairman; Tim Boege, J. H. Yocum, P. H. Look, I. Cohen. [FROM LAST SATURDAY'S SECOND EDITION.]—The typos of this office gratefully acknowledge the courtesy of Mr. Fischer, the host of the Planter's Hotel, in sending a lot of delicious cake yesterday. Here's enterprise for ye.. A Los Angeles saloon man sent all the way to Arizona for Beaver tail, and regaled his patrons on Thanksgiving Day with Beaver Tail Soup. We have just printed and bound books containing 100 promissory notes, of the most cast iron character and latest fashion. Superior paper is used, and the notes are in every way better than those usually sold. For sale at this office. Price, $1 per book. Mr. S.J.Davis, a former resident of Anaheim, was in town yesterday. He was suffering from the effects of a fall of 24 feet from a pile of hay, his wrist being disjointed and his system generally badly shaken up. We are glad to learn that he thinks of again settling in Anaheim. As Mr. and Mrs.T.A.Garey were returning home from Artesia on Tuesday evening, their carriage got off the road and company went back to the city. It turned out that Miss.Burgoyne was in reality demented, and in her mania she fancied Mrs.Rowland to be insane. It further appeared that Miss Burgoyne imagined that Mrs.Rowland had an impression that she (Miss Burgoyne) was out of her mind. And, as events proved, Miss Burgoyne was not slow in making others acquainted with her impressions.Mrs.Rowland, finding persons seemingly avoiding her, was for a time at a loss to understand it. But her mind was soon relieved. While she was seated alone in her apartments in a hotel in Germany, two gentlemen, who proved to be physicians, entered, and began to propound questions that both surprised and alarmed her.At length she was sufficiently composed to inquire the object of their visit, and was told that Miss Burgoyne had said that she (Mrs.Rowland) was insane. Not suspecting that Miss Burgoyne was not in the full enjoyment of her mental faculties,Mrs.Rowland retorted that Miss Burgoyne must be out of her mind. The physicians looked at each other," nodded their heads gravely, and promising to call again, departed. On the return of Mrs.Lippincott,Mrs.Rowland told what had occurred, and it was deemed best to find some Americans who whom they had a slight acquaintance, and make the facts known to them. Among those applied to were the Rev.W.Wilberforce Newton,of St.Paul's Church,Boston, and the Rev.R.Heber Newton of Anthon Memorial Church of New York, sons of the Rev.Dr.Newton of Philadelphia.Mrs.Rowland was alarmed at their apparent disinterestedness, and when she said that Miss Burgoyne must be insane, the reverend gentlemen looked at each other inquiringly, one remarking,"It is a very sad case;her friends should be notified."Miss Burgoyne had seen the reverend gentlemen in advance of Mrs.Rowland, and had told them and many other persons that Mrs.Rowland's mind was utterly shattered and that she had an impression that she (Miss Burgoyne) was insane.Mrs.Rowland related her troubles to other Americans,但noticing that they looked at her strangely instead of proffering their protection, she became thoroughly alarmed, and telegraphed to her son in Philadelphia to take the next steamship for Europe. He did so.meeting his mother and sister in the Hotel de la Paix,在 Geneva, and soon afterward learned that Miss Burgoyne had taken steps to have his mother put into an asylum. Miss Burgoyne was proved insane, and was left abroad.Mrs.Rowland and her daughter have returned to this country. A New York paper, speaking of the Sunday performances at the different places of amusement in that city,s thus satireizes the manner in which the law against such performances is evaded:"Grand sacred entertainments abounded again last evening. At the Grand Sacred Opera House Mlle.Durska warbled grand sacred airs from sunny grand sacred operas;Gilmore's grand and sacred manner;and Levy ravished all ears with his grand sacred cornet. At Steinway Hall the grand sacred Red Hussars from Hamburg excited the devotional feeling of their hearers to the highest pitch by selections from the grand sacred German composers. At the Atlantic Garden a vast congregation listened to the grand sacred melodies of Strauss and Offenbach, and consumed a huge quantity of grand sacred beer.At the Volks Garden a programme of grand Mr. S. J. Davis, a former resident of Anaheim, was in town yesterday. He was suffering from the effects of a fall of 24 feet from a pile of hay, his wrist being disjointed and his system generally badly shaken up. We are glad to learn that he thinks of again settling in Anaheim. As Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Garey were returning home from Artesia on Tuesday evening, their carriage got off the road and rolled down an embankment. The occupants were thrown out but escaped with a few slight bruises. We learn from reliable authority that something new under the sun is likely to be developed, at least in Los Angeles county. Timber of the best for chair and wagon making purposes has been found, and will be tested by our numerous factories. Maple, ash, alder and white oak are found in large paying quantities, and will be utilized at home.—Star. We understand that a gentlemen has gone East to secure the most improved tools for deep-well boring, with the view of searching for artesian water in the vicinity of Santa Monica. We now put ourselves upon record as prophesying that flowing water will be obtained. The conformation of the surrounding country, according to experts, gives every assurance of success.—Outlook. On Thanksgiving day the Associated Press papers had telegrams from numerous towns on the coast giving an account of the manner in which the day was to be observed. Among the reports we find this very peculiar one: Pacheco, November 28th.—In this town there are four ministers of the gospel, and as many places of worship; yet we have no Thanksgiving service held to-day. In fact, lately there has been more fighting than preaching in the churches. In the Church of Ashby de la Zouche, Leicestershire, England, are finger stocks. Two upright posts about three feet in height, and of a proportionate thickness, support a horizontal beam of an equal length, which is divided into two parts. The upper is held by a hinge at one end, while the other end is fastened down by a lock under the lower part, in which are different sized holes for containing the fingers of the disorderly from very small to extremely large; while being placed therein the upper part is let down and fastened. The name of the phonograph in German is unsergehausnekeiteitigenfernstehauptteausgesprecher. When you wind that up on the cylinder, and leave it till it gets cold, and then grind it out, it usually tears the machine to pieces and strikes the house with lightning. Bees often make long journeys in search of food. A bee owner in the West, thinking that they perhaps visited the clover field of a friend forty miles away, sprinkled their backs with flour one morning as they left their hive, having previously requested the friend to watch for them. A telegram came from the latter during the daysaying. Plenty of your white jacket bees here. Lopez Alvar of Alvar, the first swordman of the Carthagena, Spain, bullfights, has been accused of plunging his sword in prussie acid, in order to insure the immediate death of any bull he might stab. Alvar indignantly replies, through a newspaper, that he has killed 403 bulls in a legitimate manner, and invites his detractors to enter the ring and furnish him with a sword of their own. One John Brinton, living somewhere in Iowa, had a fancy some years ago that Jerusalem would be a good point for the establishment of a whiskey saloon. His wife called him a fool and refused to go with him. He has been successful, and she has now joined him. Foreign visitors are numerous, especially American and Englishmen, and John's saloon is appreciated. The St. Louis breach of promise case of Foestlin against Barnes presents the peculiarity of a plaintiff who cannot understand English, and a defendant who cannot speak anything but English. The former is a German girl, and she declares that the man made her understand by gestures that he wanted to marry her. He replies that he was only trying to tell her a story in pantomine.
