Capt. John E. Bray, Civil and Mining Engineer of San Francisco, has been busily engaged for ten or more days securing interests in various mines, selecting an eligible mill site, and making surveys and necessary grading measurements for the commencement of work. We are informed by Capt. Bray that he is acting in the interest of himself and other San Francisco capitalists, who will push the work as rapidly as possible, with the intention of having a ten stamp mill in running order before February 15th, 1879. The contracts entered into between Capt. Bray and the mine owners here requires the mill to be ready for crushing ore on or before the first day of March. Prof. Tuck, mining expert and engineer, with Mr. Huntington of the Globe Iron Works, both of San Francisco, have been visitors at Silverado, examining mines with the view of erecting a mill. They expressed themselves satisfied with the outlook, after one day's trip in the mountains, and announced their intention of taking immediate steps to ship machinery which is already prepared for setting up. It is understood that this mill is designed to work gold rock of the character produced by the "Silver Belt Lode." The opportunity will soon be afforded to mine owners to realize something from their claims, and to demonstrate the importance of the Santa Rosa Mining District to Anaheim and Southern California generally. Jas. E. Freceman, Deputy U. S. Mineral Surveyor, has completed the survey of his tunnel site, and returned to San Francisco to further arrangements for the prosecution of the work. This proposed tunnel will traverse the ledges crossing Galena mountain, cutting them at a depth of one thousand feet. The length of the tunnel site, as surveyed is three thousand TOWN BOARD OF TRUSTEES. L. W. Kirby, Chairman; Tim Bedege, J. H. Yocum, P. H. Look, I. Cohen. TOWN OFFICERS. Mr.W.W.Creighton is the editor, and a very good one he makes, too. We wish him prosperity. —Concussion of the brain is what Mr.Langunderfer has been suffering from. He received some injury the night of the fire. It gives us pleasure to report that he is now doing well. —The sky was overcast last night and the lowering clouds portended rain. It is to be hoped that the weather-to-day will be propitious, so that the strong who attend the barbecue will meet with no discomfort. —Mr.D.Platto arrived from San Francisco on Thursday night. The purchases he made in San Francisco are now arriving, and comprise a full line of groceries, canned goods, dry goods, fancy goods, etc. The following is the programme of the literary exercises to be presented at the next meeting of the Orangethorpe Literary Society: Song.....George Gray and others Recitation.....Susie Smith Declaration.....S.V.Glasscock Recitation.....Elma Smith Declaration.....H.R.Wiley Dialogue.....May Chilson and Clara Schulte Recitation.....Kittie Callaway Dialogue.....Messrs Goodhew and Glasscock Recitation....Miss Nettie Metcalf Declaration.....J.G.Goodhew Music, Instrumental.....Clara Shulte Recitation....May Chilson Declaration.....T.R.R Stone Recitation.....Mrs.B.B.Smith Dissertation.....Mr.A.Metcalf The following names were placed on the Roll of Honor in the Orangethorpe school for the month ending Nov. 8th, 1878. An Intermediate Husband. Among Moslems, divorce is even simpler than among the Jews. No "bill of divorce" is necessary, but only the short verbal formula, "Veil thyself, take thy marriage portion and go." A wife may be thus repudiated twice and taken back, but if the fatal formula has been pronounced a third time, she can only be recovered after a fully consummated marriage with and divorce by another husband. This latter condition sometimes results in awkward contretemps. The person chosen to play the part of intermediary husband is generally the oldest and feeblest poor man that can be found. For a received some injury the night of the fire. It gives us pleasure to report that he is now doing well. —The sky was overcast last night and the lowering clouds portended rain. It is to be hoped that the weather-to-day will be propitious, so that the throng who attend the barbecue will meet with no discomfort. —Mr. D. Plato arrived from San Francisco on Thursday night. The purchases he made in San Francisco are now arriving, and comprise a full line of groceries, canned goods, dry goods, fancy goods, etc. —If war is to be declared, we would rather it should be by M. A. Mendelson than by her blessed Majesty, Queen Victoria. See proclamation in another column. —In the County Court yesterday the following proceeding was had: J. B. Pierce vs his creditors—Petition in insolvency—It appearing that due notice has been given to creditors and no one appearing and objecting to the same, said petitioner is adjudged an insolvent and order made for cession of his property to an assignee to be hereafter chosen by the creditor. —Master Emanuel Davis, who to-day celebrates his thirteenth birthday, was the recipient on Thursday night of a perfect avalanche of presents from his relatives and the friends of his parents in Los Angeles and elsewhere. Among the gifts were sets of diamond studs, diamond sleeve buttons, a costly and superb gold watch and chain, gold pen and holder, etc. The value of the presents cannot be less than $500. The Bar Mitzvah of Master Davis will be held at the synagogue in Los Angeles to-day. —We had a call from Mr. G. Simmonds yesterday, and he left us a pleasant reminder of his visit in the shape of an advertisement, which will be found in another column. The Nabob Whisky, which Mr. Simmonds is introducing, is especially designed for medical and family use, and is without doubt a superior article. Messra P. Davis & Bro. are the sole agents for the sale of this whisky in this vicinity, and all orders must be sent to them. We solicit the patronage of those who require anything in the job printing line. We have hundreds of dollars invested in job printing material, and our facilities are such that we can afford to do every kind of printing at very low rates. Among Moslems, divorce is even simpler than among the Jews. No "hill of divorce" is necessary, but only the short verbal formula, "Veil thyself, take thy marriage portion and go." A wife may be thus repudiated twice and taken back, but if the fatal formula has been pronounced a third time, she can only be recovered after a fully consummated marriage with and divorce by another husband. This latter condition sometimes results in awkward contretemps. The person chosen to play the part of intermediary husband is generally the oldest and feeblest poor man that can be found. For a "condition," he consents to discharge the provisional function, and engages to divorce the lady on the morrow. But it occasionally happens that the faithless old sinner, having pocketed and earned his fee, refuses to surrender a pretty and wealthy bride, or only does so after a much longer usufruct than was bargained for, and for a further considerable money ransom. As may readily be supposed, such a condition and its incidents have weight with even the hastiest tempered husbands, and co-act with other considerations to protect wives against the risk of talak (repudiation) except for grave and sufficient reasons. Certain it is that, barring in such cases, divorces are now quite as rare among the Moslems as among the Christian subjects of the Porte, and a hundred times less common than among our "more civilized" selves. Before the Cadi, however, as before Sir John Hannen, the law in this respect favors the wife rather than the husband. The latter may have social feeling and cut the conjugal knot when he likes, but the wife can only regain her freedom on proof of positive ill-treatment or for one or two other grounds of complaint, and even then at the cost of abandoning her dowry and trespass to her peckant husband—Praser's Magazine. New Haven (Con.), Nov. 16.—By a vote of seven to one the New Haven Board of Education decided last night to keep the old uniform plan of religious exercises in public schools. The liturgy proposed by a committee of clergymen is thereby disposed of. One Catholic out of two members voted with the majority. Eucalyptus globulus—is the new drink.
