It is a heavy walking stick, made of orange wood. The tree from which it was taken grew in San Gabriel, and there is a tradition among the oldest inhabitants of that place that it was 100 years old at the time it died, not very long ago. The stick is mounted with solid silver, and engraved on the silver knob on the top are clasped hands, surrounded by the inscription "From Dr. Burtnett to Dr. Hardin." The Dr. is very proud of his present, as he well may be. A very singular occurrence took place in the canyon one day last week. John Courtright says as he was passing along the road he heard the peculiar noise of a rattle-snake just ahead of him. He stepped back a few paces and secured a club, and then advanced upon his venomous enemy, when, just as he was preparing to strike, a wildcat darted from the bushes, seized the snake, and trotted off with it, seemingly as well pleased as a hungry soldier who had secured a "square meal." Santa Monica Outlook. Messrs. P. H. Look & Co. commenced slaughtering hogs and putting up bacon and lard this week. They propose to make an immense amount of bacon this winter and great care will be taken to utilize only hogs of the primest quality. Our people will, hereafter, find it unnecessary to send to Oregon for first-class bacon and lard. Messrs. Granet & Wenger, of the Sample and Billiard Rooms, received on Thursday a choice assortment of case goods, etc., which are fully described in their advertisement. Davis & Bro has been greatly improved by an awning which extends along the entire front. Mr. D. Plato, the senior member of the firm of D. & G.D. Plato, will leave for San Francisco to-day. We had a call yesterday from Mr. S.Dicken, of Soquel, Santa Cruz county, who is on his yearly visit here. He owns a fine tract of land north of town. Among the novelties recently imported by Mr. Langenberger is a handsome parlor lamp, the globe of which is so arranged that no chimney is required. The new winter goods are beginning to arrive at Goodman & Rimpan's store and in a few days their shelves will be teeming with every imaginable article of dry-goods. A large lot of crockery and glassware was unpacked yesterday by Mr. Hippolyte Cahen. Among the lot is a fine assortment of ornamental and useful glassware of rich pattern and handsome design. A party of friends of Mr. W.A.Morrison gathered at that gentleman's house last evening to congratulate him upon the fact that by purchasing from these gentlemen they will get the genuine article. Scottish Prudence. The canny Scotchman in wary and prudent even in his dealings with Divine Providence. At the Glasgow Presbytery a fortnight ago a motion came up under the rules for the appointment of a day of thanksgiving for peace and for an abundant harvest. The Afghan complications having broken out suddenly, and peace being by no means assured, the author of the motion suggested that it would be well to postpone thanking the Almighty for peace while the present state of things lasted. The word "peace" would have been removed from the motion but for the prompt application of the Scotch love of hair-splitting, by which it was unanimously resolved that the thanks to the Almighty for peace should be offered on the express understanding that the peace was the peace of Berlin, and had no reference whatever to the present complication and impending war in Afghanistan. The attention of Gen.Dook, of the Agricultural Department, is called to the fact that a very fine article of Sweitzer cheese can be made from the milk of the cocoanut. The cocoanut could be very profitably cultivated on the Northern Pacific Railway. Gen.Dook has it in his power, too, to simplify the labor question by introducing the bread-fruit tree in this country. It is believed that by crossing the bread-fruit tree with some active variety of spring wheat, a species of vegetation could be produced from which the agile Greenbacker could pick his hot rolls in the morning without a particle of labor. By grafting the bread-fruit tree on our common butternut tree, it is thought that the splendid buttered waffles, so much in vogue with the bondholders and capitalists, could be produced in profusion and at little or no cost—Baltimore Gazette. Two Pictures. PICTURE NO. 1. A man spends $50,000 in demonstrating that our foothills possess the most perfect soil and climate for the culture of the almond. He risks his fortune in planting out a large orchard, and in bringing his trees to perfection. He makes an exhibit of samples of the product of his orchard, the first fruits of this grand and promising industry and he is awarded a premium of $2. PICTURE NO. 2. Another man enters a lank, long-legged, slim-necked, narrow-flanked beast for a trotting race, his shin bones done up in rags to compress the tendons; pads on his ankles to keep them from interfering; so lank, lean and useless that he couldn't haul a sack of beans across a 10-acre lot. This beast, by knackof breeding, has been worked up into a shape that admits of his sprawling over a mile track in 2:20. He is awarded $500 or $1,000! W. A. Morrison gathered at that gentleman's house last evening to congratulate him upon the fact of its being his birthday. They met a hearty welcome and spent a pleasant evening. We acknowledge with pleasure a call from Mr. H. S. Knapp, of Silverado, Mr. Knapp is the assayer and Deputy P. M. (which is postmaster) of our flourishing suburb. Mr. John Fischer notifies the stockholders in the Anaheim Water Company that they can procure their certificates of stock on application to him at his office in the Planters' Hotel. Mr. Leopold Cohen was gratified last week at receiving a handsome album as a present from his friends in Germany. The present was quite opportune, and it occupies a conspicuous position in the apartments which the Messrs. Cohen have just furnished. On Thursday, the jury in the case in which W. E. Taylor was charged with petty larceny gave a verdict of not guilty. The case in which Mr. Taylor was charged with a breach of the peace was tried before a jury yesterday, and a similar verdict was given. The Cardigan jackets and heavy winter underwear, which is so plentiful at the Merchant Tailoring Emporium, is meeting with a ready sale. Mr. Mendelson has a very fine stock of Gent's Furnishing Goods, adapted to this time of year. The Board of Town Trustees met yesterday. It was resolved to divide the money received from taxes and other sources, placing one-half in the cash fund and one-half in the road fund. It was also resolved to receive warrants on the Town Treasury in payment of taxes. Another man enters a lank, long-legged, slim-necked, narrow-flanked beast for a trotting race, his shin bones done up in rags to compress the tendons; pads on his ankles to keep them from interfering, so lank, lean and useless that he couldn't haul a sack of beans across a 10-acre lot. This beast, by knack of breeding, has been worked up into a shape that admits of his sprawling over a mile track in 2:20. He is awarded $500 or $1,000! One, a lasting benefit to the county, a source of happiness to the community. The other a momentary spasm of excitement, the community debauched with a mad thirst for gambling. Further comment is unnecessary.—San Jose Mercury. The making of a pianoforte in a first-class factory, as traced in the Scientific American, begins with the careful selection and seasoning of many kinds of wood. After the completion of the case comes the important work of placing the sounding board in position. On the proper disposition and grading of the bars depends the equality of vibration so much desired. Next, the case is varnished and polished by hand, being afterward taken to the stringing room, where only high-skillied workmen are employed. Finally, all the parts are adjusted, and the tuner takes the instrument in hand. The iron frames require careful casting, and the wood used in the "actions" is usually seasoned ten years. Exact uniformity is aimed at throughout, for on that largely depends the quality of the piano. Some of the machinery is as delicate as that for watchmaking. Lying Jim Anderson has again thrust himself before the public. This time he tries to exonerate Sherman by making an affidavit that the latter never wrote the famous letter, but that Senator Kellogg or his private Secretary did. Inasmuch as Anderson on another occasion swore positvely that Sherman did write it, this present denial will not have much effect. Mr. Sherman is singularly unfortunate in having to depend for his exoneration upon two such persons as Anderson and Mrs. Jenks. Eben W. Keyes, of Denver, made his wife the legal owner of all his property, so that it might be out of reach of his creditors. The wife separated from him after a quarrel, and refused to surrender a dollar of it to him. He committed suicide. BANK OF ANAHEIM. Capital Stock, $100,000 00 S. H. MOTT President. B. F.
