Sentencing Sprague.
San Burnaventura, August 5th. The following are the remarks of Judge Fawcett in sentencing Sprague, one the murderers of T. W. More: "F. A. Sprague, you have been convicted of the highest offense known to the law. You were skilfully defended at the trial. Every device was exhausted to save you, but the jury of your fellow-citizens has pronounced you guilty of the great crime with which you were charged. In the dead hour of night, you, the leader of a band of masked assassins, applied the torch to the premises of your victim, and as he rushed, startled and half naked, into the light of the flames, you closed upon him and shot him near to death. He attempted flight; you pursued him; he fell before you, and with a pleading voice, that should have wrung pity from a heart of iron, he asked for mercy but you remorselessly riddled him with bullets as you would the carcass of a dog. There is no language strong enough to depict the atrocity of such a deed; your guilt is as clear as evidence can make it; you probably thought you would be upheld by the community in which you lived; thank God, you were mistaken. There are but few monsters to applaud your act. The result of your trial proves that we are yet governed by law; that we are a community of enlightened human beings, and not a society of savages. The law has seized you, and by the voices of twelve good men holds you in its inexorable grasp to pay the dreadful penalty of your crime. Let your fate be a warning that justice is sure to follow crime, sometimes travelling slowly with leaden heel, but striking with an iron hand. I will not affect for you a sympathy I do not feel. There is no point in your case for sympathy to grasp, so far as you are concerned. I feel deeply for your faithful wife and children. They are the ones who need and who receive the pity and sympathy of all kind hearts. It only remains to formally conclude this painful duty. The judgment of the Court is that on Friday, the 27th day of September next, between the hours of 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.,

The Board of Trustees held their regular meeting yesterday. Present, Kirby, Cohen, and Yocum. The Board of Equalization finished their labors. On account of the absence of two members of the Board, action on the ordinance licensing peddlers was deferred until next meeting. The sidewalk between Odd Fellows' Hall and the bridge was ordered to be cleared and put in order. The Committee on Public Works were authorized to have sundry repairs made on the streets. A proposition to sprinkle the streets was laid on the table, as was also a communication from Mr. Woodhouse, in relation to sinking an artesian well. President Kirby was authorized to wait on the Board of Supervisors and endeavor to get them to refund the $800 road tax belonging to this municipality. The Board will meet on Monday to fix the rate of assessment for the fiscal year.
It is an odd spectacle to witness scores of women doing the work of 'longshoremen on the wharves of St. Johns, Newfoundland. When the time arrives for the vessels from Southern Europe, Brazil, West Indies, and elsewhere, to take aboard their cargoes of salt cod, herring, etc., files of buxom females, with tucked-up gowns, bared arms, and coarse brogans, may be seen along the wharves, carrying flat barrows of fish to and fro. Each barrow has four handles, and is horned by two women. They perform the same labor as men at this business, but their pay is inferior. In fact, they seem to work more arduously than their male co-operators, and continue to do so the same number of hours. Women also go on the "summer voyage" to Labrador, and act severally in the capacities of "spliters," "salters," and "headers."
