In Memoriam.
Words for the grave of James Earlidos Bellock.
Died in Anabeim, May 9th, 1878.
Over his silent breast lay the earth lightly,
Stranger hands, smooth it, oh! gently and rightly,
One beautiful tree place to wave off his resting.
While sunbeams he loved shall the turf be investing.
By our young caller's grave breathe a deep prayer,
Heaven's peace enclash him now, freed from all care!
Of life in its tumult wild, wears he no seeming,
Hushed is the trembling pulse, voiceless his dreaming.
Still, above the marble brow the dark hair is lying,
Away from the placid lips life's memories are dying,
Bowl of the loved-one's form, where art thou straying
While around his lowly bed softened winds are playing!
Over his coffined breast, turf, press then lightly!
Far above this earthly some, spirit, soar brightly!
Low stoop the angel guard, hymning thy glad morrow,
Welcomed by the Lord of Life, no more for thee is sorrow.
NOTE—The above was written on first hearing of the death of James E. Bullock, by one of a large circle of friends who loved and esteemed him for many amiable qualities, and for a rare intellectuality which from early childhood had distinguished him. He had written pleasant and valuable letters for the home paper, and those who knew him best believe that he would have won an honorable place in literature, if life and health had been his portion. May this brief tribute to one who merited much more, invoke from the stranger friends, whose kindness has already been so great, a continued remembrance of the lonely grave. While hundreds of hands here are to-day decorating the resting place of those who fell in their country's service, many hearts wander away to the new made mound in Anaheim, California. Pew youths of seventeen are so well known and truly loved for their own personal merits as our "Edridge."
MAYVILLE, N.Y., May 30th, 1878.
A Delicate Acknowledgment.
[From the St. Helena Star.]
Our old friend Dick Melrose, of the Anaheim Gazette, thus coolly appropriates the honor of God-fathering the new "Camp Melrose," on Howell Mountain, lately referred to in the Star.
"We thank the young people for the compliment paid us. We are thus particular in making acknowledgment, because we understand that hard feelings were engendered a few hundred years ago because of our failure to make suitable response when some particular friends named "Melrose Abbey" in our honor."
Nothing personal, Dick; but we always like to tell a good story when we think of it.
It is related that once upon a time a French gentleman named O'Regan came over to America and hied him at once to the Pacific Coast and water, where one of the first things

It is related that once upon a time a French gentleman named O'Regan came over to America and hied him at once to the Pacific Coast and water, where one of the first things he saw was the steamer Oregon, just sailing for the Columbia river. "Oregon, O'Regan," said the French gentleman in amazement, spelling out the name as she passed, "Jasus! but its a foine country this is intirely! Here I'm only two weeks in it, an'a shtame-boat named afther me already!"
Madrid, June 27th.-The announcement of the death of the Queen of Spain has been received with profound sorrow and sympathy throughout Europe. The feeling in Spain almost approaches consternation. Hopes were raised at the crisis of the disease that the vigorous constitution of the Queen might triumph over the complication of maladies, but her condition was made doubly perilous by the fact that she was expected to become a mother before the end of the year. The Queen died about noon in the arms of the King and surrounded by the royal family.
The remains will lie in state to-day and be conveyed to the royal mausoleum at the Escurial on Friday. The President of the medical faculty of the Royal Palace, in the bulletin announcing to the President of the Council of Ministers the death of the Queen, attributes the painful event to nervous gastric fever, accompanied by severe intestinal hemorrhage.
The rinderpest is rapidly carrying off the comparatively few head of cattle in Turkey which have escaped the ravages of war. A few weeks ago the disease was confined to the European provinces of the empire; but lately it has shown itself and is rapidly spreading throughout Asiatic Turkey. Thousands of cattle are dying every week in the vilayets of Smyra and Hudayendighiar; and unless the Government promptly adopts and puts in force measures to prevent the further spread of the contagion, one of the richest sources of the wealth of Turkey will be destroyed. Already meat is becoming scarce in the capital.
Augusta (Ga.), June 26.-A.H.Stephens spoke here to-night to an immense crowd and vindicated his course on the Potter resolution by the logic of subsequent events, and declared that he could not be ruled out of the party by political tricksters. If the coming District Democratic Convention failed to nominate him he would appeal to the people.

Mr. Morrison-has just turned out a new carriage for P. Davis & Bro. The workmanship is splendid, and everything about it denotes strength and durability. The trimming was done by Mr. Fish and the painting by Mr. Gooch. Our Anaheim carriage manufacturers are fast earning a reputation.
Col. Chalmers Scott, in a postal to the Horticulturist, from his farm on Rancho Buena Vista, near San Luis Rey, in San Diego county, says: "By personal experience and close observation of the course pursued by others, I find that the total destruction of the oleander is the only specific and radical cure for scale and fungus on orange trees.
The mining district of Silverado is now attracting public attention to a great degree. Twelve guests registered at the Silverado House in one day last week. A petition was circulated in Anaheim during the week, for a postoffice at the district, and asking that P. A. Clark be appointed postmaster. The petitioners desire that mail communication be established once a week between Silverado and Anaheim.
A sixteen-months-old baby of Mr. McPherson, a dairyman, residing in the Cienega, met with a frightful misfortune this morning, which may cost its life. The child, in playing about the house, got hold of a can of concentrated lye, which had been used in cleaning milk pans, and drank the villainous liquid. If any considerable quantity found its way into the baby's stomach the intestines must be literally eaten up. Medical aid was summoned posthaste from the city, and everything that was possible to counteract the effects of the poison was done. The doctor in attendance expresses some hopes that the child may recover.
Augusta (Ga.), June 26.-A. H. Stephens spoke here to night to an immense crowd and vindicated his course on the Potter resolution by the logic of subsequent events, and declared that he could not be ruled out of the party by political tricksters. If the coming District Democratic Convention failed to nominate him he would appeal to the people. He said Hayes was doing more for the South than Tilden could have done, and declared he himself would die in the temple of Jeffersonian Democracy, free from the party lash and caucus lasso.
Santa Barbara Press: The Call is "off" when it says Ben. Butler voted for the nomination of John C. Breckinridge for the Presidency in the National Democratic Convention at Charleston in 1860. Benjamin showed the quality of his Democracy by voting 57 times for Jeff Davis, and he has since been reminded of his offense more than 57,000,000 times.
Boston, June 20.-Henry A. Parr, who arrived from St. John, N. B., yesterday, has been arrested on a charge of murder on board the steamer "Chesapeake," from New York to Portland, December 5th, 1863. Parr was one of the seventeen persons who took possession of the "Chesapeake" in the name of the Confederacy, shooting the second engineer and throwing the body overboard.
Stockton, June 27th.-Yesterday afternoon a man by the name of Langdon, employed on the ranch of Mr. Thomas, near Lackford, was sunstruck and died within fifteen minutes. The heat in the field yesterday was intense, the thermometer standing 110 in the shade.
New York, June 27.-Hewitt publishes a reply to Watterson. He says he did not know Tilden disapproved the Electoral Commission bill. The latter did not take the responsibility of advising his friends to defeat the bill.
Here is the motive of Nobeling's crime in his own words: "Germany is nothing; the Emperor is nothing; mankind and progress are everything; we have abolished God and the people want no more Kings."
A barge with two thousand beehives aboard is afloat in the Mississippi, and is to be moved up and down the river during the season, so as to be all the time in the midst of flowers. The bees will thus be kept continually within reach of the best material for honey.
