The Backbiter.
There’s some one living in this town (Maybe you know her name,
And maybe I write it down,
Your own might prove the same).
Who, when you say, “He’s good,” will cry,
“Indeed!” You think that’s true,
But, very confidently,
“You wouldn’t—if you knew”
One day, “What pretty girl goes by?”
“Oh, horrors! you don’t think So!—Since we’re you and I,
I’ll say, her parents drink.
And she—well, I won’t tell it out,
Though I’ve no doubt ‘tis true.
You think she’s nice and pretty—but You wouldn’t if you knew?”
If one sings sweetly, “How she flats!”
If dressed in taste, “What style!”
Supremely “vulgar” all her hats,
Her dresses simply “yile.”
And when good Deson Bush failed (A noble man and true)
She said, when we his lot bewailled,
“You wouldn’t, if you knew!”
Let those admire and love who can This malice-breathing dame,
Who seems to think a prosperous man Must surely be to blame,
That beauty is a mark of sin;
That goodness must be crime;
She sees but thieves and racks in The heroics of the time.
Sometimes she doesn’t hesitate To tell us what she knows,
And in nine cases out of eight A lie is all she shows.
For virtue’s sake, I hope to find One good old doctrine true,
Some heat for such I should not mind, You wouldn’t—if you knew.
When He was a Miner.
In his great speech on the silver bill, Senator Jones pronounced a glowing but well-deserved panegyric upon the miners of this coast, declaring that he himself belonged to that class, having for years labored with the pick and shovel for a livelihood. It is a common practice with aspirants to public favor, this of declaring themselves laboring men for the sake of gaining popularity with the masses, some having recourse to it who have never performed a day of manual toil in their lives. With Jones, however, the claim is a well founded one, he having been not only a practical miner, but having, at least on one occasion, worked for wages, as the following story, related by an eye-witness, tends to establish:
Jones, who came to California at an early day, after mining for two or three years in Tuolumme county, pulled up stakes and put out on a long tramp to the north, fetching up

Anaheim Literary Society.
The usual weekly meeting of the Anaheim Literary Society was held in Magnolia Hall, Thursday evening, May 30. Mr. Henderson gave a select reading from Longfellow.
Mr. Grimshaw read the "Pickickians on Ice." The question Resolved, "That military schools should be encouraged," called forth quite an animated debate, Messrs.Montgomery and McFadden putting in astrong plea formilary schools, and Messrs.Guinn and Henderson meeting their arguments with rebutting evidence that in the opinion of the committee was stronger than the plea for. The committee, Messrs.Shaffer,FredMcKinnie and MissEllaMitchell, decided in favor of the negative. Rev.Mr.Mitchell was elected a member of the Society. A new section was added to the by-laws, authorizing the appointment of a critic. Mr.Henderson was appointed to criticise the literary exercises of the next meeting.
The exercises for to-morrow evening will consist of short addresses, essays, and an original poem by Mr.Henderson. Each speaker will be limited to ten minutes.
The performers for the anniversary evening are Messrs.Mendelson,Montgomery,Henderson,Guinn,Payne,Stephenson,McFadden,Austin and Grimshaw.
The literary exercises will occupy about one hour and a half and will be something new and interesting. The attendance has largely increased of late. It is gratifying to favor, this of declaring themselves laboring men for the sake of gaining popularity with the masses, some having recourse to it who have never performed a day of manual toil in their lives. With Jones, however, the claim is a well founded one, he having been not only a practical miner, but having, at least on one occasion, worked for wages, as the following story, related by an eye-witness,tends to establish:
Jones, who came to California at an early day, after mining for two or three years in Tuolumme county, pulled up stakes and put out on a long tramp to the north, fetching up in Weaver Basin, Trinity county, his exchequer so depleted that he was obliged at once to find something to do.In this strait he hired out by the day to a Pike county bull puncher, who was running a string of sluices on Weaver creek This Pike was a sour, goutty sort of fellow, but our miner, thinking the alkali absorbed in crossing the plains might have counteracted the natural acerbity of his temper, was disposed to treat him with affability, extending to him,on all occasions, the common amenities of life.
After this had gone on for a short time he,of the butternut jeans, determined to check what seemed to him such undue familiarities from and underling, wherefor, the future Senator, cearing work for a moment and leaning on his shovel,as was his wont, bade him a cheery "good morning,"his employer, scowling, growled out "look here, young man,did I employ you to shovel into that yar snice or stand thar on one leg and pass the compliments of the day with the boss?"
According to the tradition, the relation of master and servant was the same evening severed between these parties.-Scientific Press.
Age and Wealth.
It may be noticed that our great capitalists have in most instances reached advanced years.Morgan,Astor and Vanderbilt were each past 80;Stewart was but a few years younger.James Brown was also an octogenarian.Peter Goelet is 78,and George Law was of equal age while Peter Cooper is 87.Even Moses Taylor has reached three score and ten。它 requires a long time to build up a large fortune Stephen Whitneywho, next to Charles Morgan was the rich est Connecticut man in this cityreached 82 Whitneylike Morganwas a tight-fisted money mongerwho did as little for mankind as possible. The only noticeable feature is in life is that he left an estate valued at ten millions These Connecticut men were each at either end of Front Street,Morgan being at Peck slip while Whitney's office was near the Battery They seldom met,and seemed to be in a rivalry in the acquisition of wealth.Between these two remarkable instances of success one may enumerate many lesser but still remarkable Connecticut menincluding P.T.Barnum,B.B.Sherman,S.B.Chittenden,Solon Humphreys Albert Woodruff and others.-N.Y.Corr.Troy Times.

Board of Supervisors.
Matter of claim of Geo. C. Knox for compensation as Superintendent of Irrigation. On motion of Supervisor Morton, the following report, presented by the District Attorney, was adopted:
To the Honorable the Board of Supervisors of Los Angeles County:
GENTLEMEN: I find, from an examination of the claim of George C. Knox, that it is not verified as required by law.
Section 4,082 of the Political Code provides "The Board of Supervisors must not hear or consider any claim in favor of any individual against the county, unless an account properly made out, giving all items of the claim, duly verified as to its correctness, and that the amount claimed is justly due, is presented to the Board within a year after the last item of the account accrued."
In my opinion the Board should decline to consider the claim presented, and refer it back to the claimant, for the reason that it is not verified.
