[GENERAL ORDERS No. 7] HEADQUARTERS SEVENTH U.S.CAVALRY, FORT A.LINCOLN, DAKOTA, April 10, 1878. I. The horseknown as Comanche being the only living representative of the bloody tragedy of the Little Big Horn, June 25, 1876, his kind treatment and comfort should be a matter of pride and solicitude on the part of every member of the Seventh Cavalry, to the end that his life may be prolonged to the utmost limit. Wounded and scarred as he is, his very existence speaks in terms more eloquent than words of the desperate struggle against overwhelming numbers, of the hopeless conflict, and of the heroic manner in which all went down on that fatal day. II. The commanding officer of Company I will see that a special and comfortable stall is fitted up for him, and he will not be ridden by any person whatever, under any circumstances, nor will he be put to any kind of work. III. Hereafter, upon all occasions of ceremony (of mounted regimental formation), Comanche, saddled, bridled, draped in mourning and led by a mounted trooper of Company I, will be paraded with the regiment. By command of Brevet Major General S. D. Sturgis, Colonel Seventh Regiment. ERNEST A. GARLINGTON. First Lieutenant and Adjutant Seventh Cavalry. Honer to old Comanche, The sole survivor he Of the fierce fight where Custer died With all his chivalry. Honer to Keogh's charger! Only his flashing eye Saw the Three Hundred fighting— Saw the Three Hundred die! His was the place of honor, Where his Irish rider fell, When the Seventh rode into the valley That blazed like the mouth of hell! The horse is part of the soldier; He mixed his blood with theirs; Therefore for old Comanche All comforts and no cares. For him free stall and pasture While strength and life remains; And let no living rider Bestride his back again? But when the bugles summon The Seventh to parade. TOWN OFFICERS. Freasurer... FROM LAST SATURDAY'S SECOND EDITION. — A $25,000 transfer of real estate is noted in another column. — A suit for divorce has been commenced by Elizabeth H. Clark (nee Alvord.). — Tax-Collector Kremer has been in town for a couple of days, collecting licenses. This convenience which business men appreciate it. It has heretofore been necessary to send the money to the Collector's office in Los Angeles. — In the case of Thompson Sears vs. Heimann & George and John Fischer and D.J.Sorenson, in the District Court, judgment was rendered on the 15th ult., in favor of the defendants, Fischer and Sorenson. Said defendants were represented by Scott & Montgomery of our town, and Hutton & Godfrey, of Los Angeles. The subject of the culture of the Chinese flat peach is becoming of interest to the citizens of Florida. It has been grown successfully there by a Mr.A.J.Yniestra, after many failures by fruit growers in other sections of the South. That gentleman writes to the Pensacola Advocate that it, "in his opinion, belongs to this climate, and regrets Honor to Keogh's charger! But when the bugles summon The Seventh to parade, Saddle and bridle Comanche, In sable housing arrayed; And let a trooper lead him, The horse that saw Custer die, Forth to the place of honor In the front of Company I! Will he neigh to his fellows, whose riders Fall on that fatal mom? Will they hear him amid the trumpets. Out on the Little Big Horn! Honor to old Consanche, While life and strength remain! But O., to see the Captain Upon his back again! Intolerance. Very different was the policy of the first settlers of New England and their treatment of the Indians; and how little they understood the true character of William Penn and his friends, may be learned by the following copy of an original letter of Cotton Mather, recently discovered among some old papers in a library of the Massachusetts Historical Society. It bears date "September ye 15, 1682," and is addressed to "Ye aged and beloved John Higginson." "There be now at sea a shippe (for our friend Esaias Holdercraft, of London, did advise me by the last packet, that it would sail sometime in August), called ye Welcome, R.Greenway, Master, which has aboard a hundred or more of ye heretics and malignants called Quakers, with W.Penn, who is ye chief scamp, at ye head of them. Ye General Court has accordingly given secret orders to Master Malachi Huxett, of ye brigg Porpoise, to waylayye ye said Welcome, as near ye coast of Codde as may be, and make captive of ye said Penn and his ungodlie crew, so that ye Lord may be glorified and not mocked on ye soil of this new country with ye heathen worshippe of these people. Much spoil can be made by selling the whole lot to Barbadoes, where slaves fetch good prices in rumme aud sugar; and we shall not only do ye Lord great service by punishing ye wicked, but shall make great gayne for his ministers and people. Master Huxett feels hopefull, and I will set down the news he brings, when ye shippe comes back. "Yours in ye bowells of Christ, COTTON MATHER." William Penn did indeed sail "in ye shippe Welcome;" and a goodly number of his friends with him, but the Lord did not allow "Master Huxett waylayye him near ye coast of Codde and captive ye said Penn and his ungodlie crew;" and the ministers and people did not receive "great gama." that The subject of the culture of the Chinese flat peach is becoming of interest to the citizens of Florida. It has been grown successfully there by a Mr. A. J. Yniestra, after many failures by fruit growers in other sections of the South. That gentleman writes to the Pensacola Advocate that it, "in his opinion, belongs to this climate, and regrets that he is not now prepared to supply pits or seedlings." He has a great many bearing trees of that peach, one of which bore over twelve hundred mature peaches. They have now fruit larger than buckshot, and are fully leaved, and will mature in May. For shipment they will bear transportation better than any other peach. Some were shipped last spring to New York, Pennsylvania and other remote places, and in every case the fruit was received withoutblemish. Sir Kenelm Digby, whom Penant, the antiquary, calls, "that prodigy of learning, erudulity, valor, and romance," was so enamored of the beauty of his wife that tradition alleges, he resorted to all sorts of extraordinary devices, with the idea of adding to her charms. She was fed with capona, fattened with vipers, and divers other eccentric viands, and more than a century after his death a large and peculiar snail might be found in the neighboring woods, which he had imported as a nostrum for his wife. What with medicines and cosmetics the poor lady died at thirty-three. There is a wide-spread famine in Morocco, Africa. The Sultan has repaired, bare-footed, to the Mosque, to pray for rain. A Sunday School boy, of Maysville, Ky., was asked by the Superintendent if his father was a Christian. "Yes, sir," he replied, "but he is not working at it much." "Sales by candle" was the method of sale during the seventeenth century. A wax candle, about an inch long, was set on the edge of a knife, and he that bid most before the candle went out was the buyer. "Yours in ye bowells of Christ, COTTON MATHER." William Penn did indeed sail "in ye shipper Welcome;" and a goodly number of his friends with him, but the Lord did not allow "Master Huxett to waylaye him near ye coast of Codde and captive ye said Penn and his ungodlie crew;" and the ministers and people did not receive "great gayne," that their sale in Barbadoes for "rumme and sugar," would have produced. Downey Items. [From the Courier.] Some specimens of coal, taken from newly discovered claims, a short distance from here, have been sent to Los Angeles to be tested. The mine we spoke about some time since has been ascertained to be located on a Spanish grant, and the discoverers are not very hopeful of being able to do anything with it. A gypsum deposit has been discovered about ten miles from here, and Mr. Byrd brought in a wagon load a day or two since, and it will be tested on some of our alkali lands. Dr. Wolf has a mill for grinding the gypsum. Mr. Seiler, of this place, imported a quantity of gypsum from San Francisco, a short time since, for use on his lands, and we understand that the experiment has been highly satisfactory. According to the celebrated German botanist, Herr Schlienden, "about 450 tons of best-root are annually, in Thuringia alone, transformed into tobacco." In no country in the world are cigars sold at so cheap a rate as in Germany, and the reason is obvious. By means of her own indigenous products, she is enabled to beet all competitors. The exports of champagne from France to the United States, last year, amounted to 151,000 dozen on which the duty amounted to $90,600. A little son of John Keiser, of the Cajon, San Diego County, was thrown from a horse last week. His foot caught in the stirrup, and he was dragged some distance and killed. AGRICULTURAL Implements!
