A Los Angeles man, who was married but a few months ago, and who is not entirely unconnected with the photograph business, (the initials of his name are V.Wolfenstein) has commenced a suit for divorce. The boys in the Gazette office return hearty thanks to Mr.Freiseneker for the fine bottled Bock beer sent up to the office yesterday; and judging from the pleasure which wederived from it, we can safely recommend Frank's Bock beer to the thirsty public. The next meeting of the Anaheim Literary Society will be held on Thursday next at the Magnolia Hall. Adjourned till June 3d at 10 A.M. Juvenile Smokers. A British physician, observing the large number of boys under 15 years of age on the street with cigars and pipes in their mouths, was prompted to examine the breath of this class of smokers, and for that purpose selected 38 boys between the age of 9 and 15. In 22 of these cases he found various disorders of the circulation and digestion, palpitation of the heart and more or less marked taste for strong drink. In 12 there was frequent bleeding of the nose, and 12 had slight ulceration of the mouth caused by tobacco. The doctor treated for theirailments, but with little effect until the habit of smoking was discontinued, when breath and strength were soon restored. The effect of tobacco in creating a taste for strong drinks is unquestionably very great. If the testimony of some tobacco users and medical men is of any weight, one of the most radical methods of keeping the young from being led to intemperate drinking is to deny them tobacco. According to Sir David Wedderburn, writing in the Fortnightly Review, if we wish to learn true politeness we must go to heathen Japan, "a country where men never lose their temper, where women and children are always treated with gentleness, where common laborers bow and beg pardon of each other if they happen to jostle accidentally, where popular sports do not inflict suffering on the lower animals, where a paper screen is a sufficient protection against all intrusion—even that of burglars, and where cleanliness takes such a high rank among social virtues as to be carried almost to a ludicrous excess." He says further that foreigners who have lived for a considerable time in the interior of Japan, on returning to "civilized society," have declared that the manners of their own countrymen seem to them vulgar and almost brutal, "acustomed as they have become to a courtesy singularly free from servile or mercenary hearty thanks to Mr. Freisenecker for the fine bottled Bock beer sent up to the office yesterday; and judging from the pleasure which we derived from it, we can safely recommend Frank's Bock beer to the thirsty public. The next meeting of the Anaheim Literary Society will be held on Thursday next at the Magnolia Hall. The subject for discussion will be Resolved, That poverty is oftener the result of misfortune than mismanagement. Affirmative, Guinn, Cahill and Leonard. Negative, Henderson, Athearn and Beebe. For declamation, Messrs. Montgomery and Stephenson. The town Trustees held a meeting yesterday. Eight ordinances were passed. Among the most important was one requiring all store-keepers to pay licenses, according to amount of sales made, the money so collected to be expended in sprinkling the streets during summer. Peddlers, auction stores, etc., are also taxed. Another ordinance reduces the Marshal's salary from $25 per month to $5. Under the new charter the fees of this officer will make up the difference. The Clerk's salary was fixed at $75 per annum, instead of $3 per meeting, as heretofore. The Assessor's salary was fixed at $60 per annum. A communication was received from Dr. Ellis asking that a sidewalk be placed on Chesnut Street. The matter was referred to the Committee on Public Improvements. As Mr. Cahill was absent, Mr. Cohen acted as Clerk, pro tem. CLEVELAND, O., May 10.—Last evening Senator J. D. Cameron and Miss Elizabeth Sherman were married. The floral decorations were lavish and elegant. One hundred and fifty relatives and near friends attended the reception at the residence of Colgate Hoyt, Esq., a brother-in-law of the bride. The wedding gifts were numerous and costly, the aggregate value being one hundred thousand dollars. SYRACUSE, N. Y., May 10.—There is some basis for the reported Fenian movement in this locality. Some 250 men are engaged in it here and some money and arms have been raised. They claim that they are waiting orders from O'Neil. The better class of Irishmen do not sympathize with the movement. MONTREAL, May 10.—The Mayor of the city has received a letter from Massachusetts, stating that the Fenians are making formidable preparations for a raid on Canada. NEW YORK, May 8.—"Carrying coals to Newcastle" is outdone by exporting beer to Germany. Several large orders have been received by a firm of brewers in this city, and a member of the firm is going to Germany to increase the trade. Biancmark, to whom several casks were sent, replied that they had been received in splendid condition. Where the division between the toes is not complete, and they are partially joined, they are called twin toes. They are reputed to be very lucky. John Bright said in a recent speech at Rochdale that one-third of the whole land of the United Kingdom, being no less than 23,000,000 acres, belongs to 935 men. Among the papers left by the young Englishman, Arthur Burleigh Toussaint, who suicided in Meriden, Connecticut, the other day, was a card with this sentence written on it: "When the devil has time to kill flies with his tail, then will I believe in the love and truth of woman." The Ninety-six (S. C.) Guardian chronicles the birth of colored parents of a very singular child. From the waist to the crown of the child's head its skin is pure white, from the hips to the knees the skin is of a coal black, and from there down the skin is white. The head is covered with hair as white as driven snow, and in unusually long for a child of that age. The child is large and healthy. AGRICULTURAL Implements! Season of 1876-7 Barrows, Furrey & Co.
