Minneapolis, Minn., May 3.—At seven o'clock last evening this city was shaken by an explosion which was traced to the group of flouring mills just above St. Anthony's Falls. The explosion came from the Washburn mill, followed by a crash which crushed the structure. Secondary explosions instantly destroyed Thompson & Hoyt's and Humboldt mills, and the flames immediately burst out communicating to the Galaxy mills, those of Pettit, Robinson & Co., Cahill, Ankeny & Co., L. Day & Song, Day & Rollins, Buell, Newton & Co., Gorton, Hayward & Co., the Washburn A. & B. Mills and lesser structures. The destruction of the explosion extended much further, glass being wrecked for several squares and buildings shaken throughout the city. At 8:30 the fire was raging within the limits. The theory of the explosion is that it took place in gas generated in the patent middling's purifier process. The loss of life is undoubtedly great, but full details are lacking in the confusion that surrounds the scene. The first rumors placed the dead at seventy or eighty, but this is not borne out by inquiry. The explosion took place at the hour of changing day for night hands, and many of both were undoubtedly in the buildings. Chicago, May 3.—The Tribune's special from Minneapolis says that the scenes during and after the explosion were terrible, and the loss of life must have been great. Perhaps the entire extent of the disaster will not be known for many days. Governor Pillabury, who has large interests in the various mills, was present during most of the night. The entire milling district was in the greatest danger. At the time of closing this report the loss is figured at more than a million dollars. Out of 181 run of stone in the various mills in the city 97 have been destroyed, or about one-half of the milling interests in the city rubbed out. The force of the disaster can only be realized when it is known that thousands of people are dependent on this almost exclusive business of the city. FROM LAST SATURDAY'S SECOND EDITION. The wages of the laborers on Lucky Baldwin's Santa Anita Ranch, for the last four months, foot up to $16,000. Between seven and eight o'clock on Thursday night a half a dozen or more boys were working off their superfluous vitality and dirt by bathing in the dishe near the corner of Los Angeles and Auguste Streets. The Los Angeles City funds are to be farmed out to the highest bidder. It would probably believe our worthy treasurer, Mr. Rimpau, of a vast responsibility if the Trustees of Anaheim would adopt a similar course with the municipality's money. The Santa Monica Outlook says: "We saw a turnip the other day that measured 30 inches in circumference and weighed 61 lbs. It grew in the garden of W. K. Potter, of this place. We call this a 'whopper' for this time of the year." The item is a "whopper" for any time of year. The Board of Town Trustees met yesterday. The only business transacted was the appointment of Mr. Langenberger as a committee to wait on the Board of Supervisors and urge upon that body the propriety of various mills, was present during most of the night. Later investigation confirms the opinion that the first estimates of the loss of life were exaggerated. The number of dead is now placed at seventeen. It appears that most of the day force had gone home and only the small night force remained. The loss of property is enormous, but the contusion is too great for an intelligent estimate. At present a rough calculation places it at fifteen hundred thousand. The loss in the city by the breaking of glass, etc., is $10,000. Five mills and a planing mill were destroyed, besides adjoining property. Death of John Morrissey. SARATOGA, May 1.—John Morrissey, ex-Congressman and State Senator from the city of New York, died at half-past 7 this evening. OBITUARY. John Morrissey was born in Templemore, Tipperary county, Ireland, February 12, 1831; he came to the United States when 5 years of age; learned the trade of a brushmaker; was subsequently a deck hand on the Hudson River, and afterwards was a steamboat runner at New York City, where he fought his first prizefight. He was badly beaten, but a number of terrible encounters, in which he displayed almost superhuman endurance, established his pugilistic fame. In 1851 he came to San Francisco on a gambling and prize-fighting expedition, arriving here without a dollar. He fought a severe battle on Mare Island on August 31, 1852, with an Englishman named Thompson, who claimed to be champion on this coast. Eleven rounds were fought in sixteen minutes, when Thompson struck a foul blow and lost the battle. Soon afterward Morrissey returned to New York, and on October 12th, 1853, fought a fierce battle with Yankee Sullivan for $1000 a side. Thirty-seven rounds were fought, and the combat ended in a free fight, but Morrissey was declared winner. On the 26th of July, 1854, he fought a rough-and-tumble fight with the notorious Bill Poole. Both sides claimed the victory. On the 20th of October, 1857, he fought John C. Heenan for $2500 a side. And won. Both men were badly used up. A recapitulation of Morrissey's varied combats would require an excess of space, but after the Heenan fight he retired from the ring and accumulated wealth in gambling and lottery enterprises, and embarked in politics. In 1866 he was elected to Congress from one of the New York districts. At the time of his death he was a State Senator of New York. Considering his early associations and all thecircum- The Santa Monica Outlook says: "We saw a turnip the other day that measured 30 inches in circumference and weighed 6½ lbs. It grew in the garden of W. K. Potter, of this place. We call this a 'whopper' for this time of the year." (The item is a "whopper" for any time of year. The Board of Town Trustees met yesterday. The only business transacted was the appointment of Mr. Langenberger as a committee to wait on the Board of Supervisors and urge upon that body the propriety of paying into the Town Treasury the amount collected from citizens of Anahpim for road taxes. The newly-elected town officers will assume their duties on Monday. The National Police Gazette, which arrived here last week, contained an account, with illustration, of a bloody tragedy, reported to have occurred at Santa Monica on the 29th of last March. It was a fabrication from beginning to end, as nothing of the kind ever happened here. The account purports to be a letter written from Los Angeles, and the illustration even contains a picture of the Santa Monica Hotel. The names of the parties engaged in the fatal encounter are given as Cliff A. Grayson, Geo. Hettiger and George Williams.—Santa Monica Outlook. The Police Gazette and papers of that ilk are prone to indulge in such gross fabrications. About a year or so ago a New York paper had a thrilling account of a tragedy, purporting to have occurred in Ananeim. The gist of the story was that a Poor Man deliberately contracted small pox, and then surreptitiously gained an entrance into the house of his enemy, a Rich Man, in order to be revenged for some insult. The Rich Man and all his family took the disease and died, while the Poor Man recovered and went on his way rejoicing! The total expense of the deportation, salvage and erection of the Cleopatra Needle, on the Thames embarkment, will be about $80,000, all of which is defrayed by Dr. Eraimus Wilson. The removal of the obelisk of Luxor from Thebes to France, and its erection in the Place de la Concorde, Paris, cost the French Government $400,000. Salinas City Index: Jim Iverson has harnessed up a team of four Chinaman and is working them to a harrow out in the tules. This is infringing on the rights of horse-flesh, but Jim says the "Chinese must go." A teamster in Eureka, Nev., persisted in using a particularly vicious mule, and for the following reason: "I used to have a sweet-heart back in Injiany that I was orful gone on, and this yere mule has so many pints in common that my heart just yearns over her. She were as likely a gal as ever run bare-footed in a corn field, but she were too obstinate to enjoy good health. She'd look you right smiling in the eye, and you'd think that thar were more sugar in her nor in a New Orleans merlasses hogshead, but if you laid yer hand on her onexpected like, she'd kick the breeching all to thunder in less than a minute. That's just the way with that mule; but you get into a place whar the mud's deep, and the rest of the team kerflummixed, and call onto her for assistance, and blast my eyes if she won't pull herself clear out of her hide to help you out of your trouble. That were the very way with Nancy, and I keep the mule outer love for that gal." It is said of the late Lord Leitrim that when his tenants came to him for relief his usual reply was, "Go to hell or America." Mr. O'Counor, a Democratic member of the Ohio Legislature, turned out to be a bounty-jumper, deserter, and Penitentiary convict. He was permitted to resign. A man died in Louisville the other day who professed to have kissed Bobby Burns' wife. If he had kissed our wife he would have died long ago. The numerous possessors of Thomas Jefferson's snuff-box will be shocked to learn from his niece, who writes to the Washington Post, that Thomas never carried a snuff-box in his life. A Dr. Wild, of Brooklyn, has announced that St. Patrick and the prophet Jeremiah are one and the same person, and that Jeremiah established the ninth or arch degree of masonry. Sacramento has but few policemen and a city ordinance that citizens must not use a policeman's whistle: If a citizen, needing police protection, blows a police whistle, he is arrested and fined. Yet Sacramento is a very nice place. The Courier-Journal, which surely ought to know, says Kentucky raises more hemp, needs more of it, and uses less of it, according to population, than any other State in the Union. The Philadelphia Times says Ben Wade has written a letter from the spirit world to the Banner of Light, in which there isn't a single "cuss" word, and its authenticity is consequently denied.
