The Doctor thinks some of leaving that country of fog and mist and settling in some one of the beautiful valleys of Los Angeles county. Passing by the ranch of Mr. Newton Ingram a few days ago, we stopped a short time to examine some fine pigs produced by imported stock. The mother and father of these pigs were imported from China by Mr. Ferguson. These hogs mature early, and are prolific breeders and are fattened easily at little expense. The mother of these pigs had two litters before she was 12 months old. Mr. Sharber, who has rented the Olden ranch, has 250 acres in barley and 50 in wheat. He thinks his wheat crop will turn out finely this year and is a firm believer in the successful growth of wheat in this locality. His barley was sown very late and is but little damaged by the wind and rain. The public school will close in two weeks for a long vacation, having been kept open the required $8 months. The last meeting of the "Literary" was postponed on account of storm. The beautiful trees in Mr. Win Smith's front yard are admired by all who behold them. We lately visited his residence and while there were shown some splendid seedling orange trees. They are nine years old, and bore heavily last season. They are full of blossoms this year and promise a big yield. We notice a small budded tree not over 4 feet high which is quite a curiosity. It is only 1 year from the bud but on it are hanging three large oranges. There were five but two have been picked off. This is the most precocious orangeling we know of in these parts. The sturdy and vigorous growth of these trees attest the fertility of the soil and almost total freedom from frost. If Mr. Smith had set out trees on a large scale when he first came to Orangethorse he would now have one of the most beautiful and attractive places in this valley, but we are glad to learn that the enterprising stock feeder now "sees" the error of his ways' and will hereafter devote a portion of his time, energy and capital to the planting of treca, and that he will otherwise adorn and embellish his place until he has a most beautiful home surrounded by thrifty orchards delighting the eye and enriching the pocket. The wool clip this season has been a light one, comparatively speaking. The Smith Brothers sheared 18,000 lbs., and the clip of Mr. S. Stroud amounted to only 2,180 lbs. A visit to Mr. Schulte's well-kept gardens and flourishing orchards is always a pleasure. His locust grove is in the glory of green leaves and white blossoms, and his almond orchard promises well. In his flower garden there are several of those elegant shrubs TOWN OFFICERS Preasurer ... T. Ree Rimpan Assessor ... H. Blanken Marshal ... J. Wartheberg Recorder ... A. The Odd Fellows' Celebration and picnic at the Tivoli Garden took place on yesterday.Owing to the ball upon Thursday evening and other causes the people were tardy in gathering at the grounds' and until noon few but visitors from Santa Ana and the surrounding country were present, and fears were entertained that the affair would prove a failure from lack of numbers. On account of the scanty gathering the literary exercises were dispensed with and an attack was made upon the lunch baskets which,as usual on such occasions, were filled with goodies. After lunch the picnickers began to assemble in greater numbers, and at two o'clock the dancing at the pavilion commenced with a crowd large enough to secure a pleasant now "sees the error of his ways" and will hereafter devote a portion of his time, energy and capital to the planting of trees, and that he will otherwise adorn and embellish his place until he has a most beautiful home surrounded by thrifty orchards delighting the eye and enriching the pocket. We acknowledge our indebtedness to Anaheim Lodge No. 199 for courtesy in the presentation of a badge and our cordial welcome to the festivities. Orangethorpe Items. REGULAR CORRESPONDENCE OF THE GAZETTE. The recent rains which were accompanied with such a high wind have badly lodged the barley and a considerable portion will have to be cut for hay. The very late sown barley and the wheat and rye are not much injured. The visits of peddlers are of frequent occurrence and cause great annoyance to residents. Farmers are interrupted in their work and compelled to listen to a lengthy description of the great merits of the article which the traveling vendor has for sale, until the honest tiller of the soil, through fear of being talked to death, buys something in order to get rid of his tormentor. Nor are the farmer's wives forgotten by these itinerant merchants. A ring of the bell, or a knock at the door summons the busy house-keeper from her work, and the glib-tongued peddler deftly enters without invitation, quickly secures a seat, and then pours forth such a torrent of "big words" and well committed phrases that the poor lady in despair is either obliged to treat him with rudeness and order him to leave the house, or buy some of his wares to induce him to leave. The persecuted housewives of Orangethorpe moan piteously for some of Kearney's "hemp." A Mormon missionary recently passed through this place, stopping on his way to convert a few "Gentiles." He told his hearers that all Europe and the greater part of the whole world would soon be convulsed in war, and the chosen people of God (Mormons of course) must flee to Utah for shelter and protection. We believe he did not succeed in adding any members to the "true church." Dr. Glasscock, of Humboldt county, is a AGRICULTURAL Implements! Season of 1876-7 Barrows, Furrey & Co. Of Los Angeles.
