W. Potts Recorder C. E. Miles Washington Letter, REGULAR CORRESPONDENCE OF THE GAZETTE. WASHINGTON, D.C., April 6. Hon. Montgomery Blair is very active in advocating the passage of a bill in Congress giving effect to the resolutions introduced by him in the Maryland Legislature and passed by that body. They instruct the Attorney-General to "exhibit to the Supreme Court of the United States" a bill of complaint, showing that by reason of fraud in the counting of the electoral vote, etc., Maryland was deprived of her just influence in the Electoral College. The object sought, of course, is to secure the throwing out of the votes of Louisiana, and the consequent declaration that Mesara Tilden and Hendricks, and not Mesara Hayes and Wheeler, were elected President and Vice-President. It is only stating a fact when I say that Mr. Blair is far more sanguine than any one else of the passage through Congress of the necessary bill to enable the Supreme Court to take up and dispose of the case. Yesterday by a very decided vote, the House declared the position of Doorkeeper vacant. Col. Polk had some excellent defenders, and they fought hard to save him. He was not accused of having attempted to make money out of his position, and it is most likely that his worst offences are not new to the office, but he was believed to have fallen short of what a Doorkeeper ought to be in these times of reformation in the civil service, and he had to go. Secretary Schurz has done what most people will commend, in appointing two women among the visitors to the Government Insane Asylum here. A large portion of the unfortunate inmates are women. These are the first appointments of the kind ever made. Secretary Sherman was yesterday before the House Finance Committee, and gave his views upon resumption. He holds that we can resume specie payments on the first day of January next, and that to do so will be beneficial to all. [FROM LAST SATURDAY'S SECOND EDITION.] Let it be remembered that our prices for job printing of every kind are as low as those of any office in the county, and that our work compares favorably with that of any office in the State. We solicit the patronage of our readers. There was a very pleasant gathering on Thursday evening at the residence of Mrs. Kulp on Olive street. The Los Angeles Star says Frank Murther, Mayor of Cabazon, is in the city negotiating some sewer bonds. The Santa Ana mail bag was put off at this station last night and the consequence was the Santa Ana people got no mail. We have received from F. W. Helmick, No. 136 West Fourth street, Cincinnati, O., a copy of that popular song, "Lullaby," as sung in "Fritz." Price 40 cents. Our correspondent, Chevalier, informs us that the men drowned at Newport, besides Capt. Pierce, were Charles Anderson, a German, George Fear, Antonio Silva and Frank ——, the two latter being Portugese. M. A Mendelson & Co. have just received a large invoice of new styles of gentlemen's wear. Mr. Mendelson displays Secretary Schurz has done what most people will commend, in appointing two women among the visitors to the Government Insane Asylum here. He was very sharply questioned by members of the Committee, but created a decidedly favorable impression by the readiness and aptness of his replies. One of the most delightful homes in Washington is that of the well-known historian, George Bancroft. It is the house in which Secretary Harlan, of Lincoln's Cabinet, lived, and has been purchased by Bancroft since his return from abroad. It is very richly furnished in unique and elaborate designs, most of which were executed in Europe. The covering of the drawing room suite are of satin; embroidered by Mrs. Bancroft's own hands. The paintings on the wall are rare, and mostly foreign. The old historian has two hobbies, one which he rides—a large black horse—and the other he cultivates—a rare garden. He rides alone, but in his gardening he is attended by two servants, one of whom holds a protecting umbrella over his head whenever the sun's rays are too intense for comfort. St. Louis LAGER BEER! Ladies and gentlemen desiring to have operations performed can have them done at their residence without extra charge. Please address through Postoffice or leave orders at his Institute, northwest corner of Spring and Fourth Stiggate Los Angeles Branch office at Planters' Hotel, Annheim. The Doctor will be in his office at Anheim to attend his patients from the 15th to the 20th of every month. Notice. ALL OWNERS OF STOCK OF ANY KIND,HORSES, cattle, sheep or hogs, are hereby cautioned against allowing their animals to range on the Stearns' Rainches, without authority from the undersigned, as they will be proceeded against for so doing, as trespassers under the No Fence Act. Under no circumstances will hogs be permitted to range on the said rainchos. All parties are also cautioned against cutting and removing from said ranches wood of any kind, either for fire-wood or fencing purposes, and are hereby notified that the section of the Presque Law relative to such acts will be rigidly enforced against them. J K TUFFREE. Agent for leasing unsold lands on the Stearns' Rainches, for irrigation. Office in Langenberger's Cen- We have received from F. W. Helmick, No. 136 West Fourth street, Cincinnati, O., a copy of that popular song, "Lullaby," as sung in "Fritz." Price 40 cents. Our correspondent, Chevalier, informs us that the men drowned at Newport, besides Capt. Pierce, were Charles Anderson, a German, George Fear, Antonio Silva and Frank ——, the two latter being Portuguese. M. A Mendelson & Co, have just received a large invoice of new styles of gentlemen's wear. Mr. Mendelson displays splendid taste, and is always on hand with the latest novelties. An irate celestial was hunting for law yesterday. He contemplated sueing A. G. Beebe in consequence of some trouble regarding a purchase of five cents worth of crackers. The Magnolia Ball Committee are hard at work putting every thing in shape for the evening of the 25th. A bon bon party is a new feature and there will be a large attendance. We are desired to say, to prevent misunderstanding, that the bon bons will be distributed free. The Status of the Supervisorship. Rumors to the effect that Mr. Spurgeon had resigned his position, and that J. D. Ott had been appointed in his stead have been extensively circulated during the last week. The minutes of the Board do not show that Mr. Spurgeon has tendered his resignation to that body, and before the County Judge can appoint a supervisor, a vacancy must be declared in the Board. With our knowledge of Judge Stephens, we can scarcely think that he would so far compromise himself as to agree to appoint any man to the position of supervisor before a vacancy was created in the Board and without giving the residents of the Supervisorial District a choice to express their wishes by petition. It is evident that effort has been made to prevent the signing of petitions throughout the district by asserting that the County Judge had already appointed Mr. J. D. Ott in the place of Mr. Spurgeon. We confidently assert to all those who have petitions to make expressing their choice of Supervisor that no such appointment has yet been made as the resignation of Mr. Spurgeon does not appear in the minutes of the Board of Supervisors.
