This is an Act to provide for the building of a school house in Anaheim School District. The Board of Trustees of the School District are authorized to issue the bonds of said district for any amount not exceeding ten thousand dollars, with coupons attached for interest to accrue. The Board is authorized to convert the bonds into money by selling the same to the highest bidder, after advertising for at least twenty days for sealed proposals to purchase said bonds. No bonds shall be sold at a discount of more than fifteen per cent. The Act provides that the money so procured shall be used exclusively in paying for and furnishing said school house, and in improvements of the lot belonging to the district and the payment of incidental expenses. Within three months after the issuance of any bonds and thereafter in every second year, until all the bonds and the interest thereon are fully paid, one District Assessor and District Tax Collector shall be elected by the qualified electors of the district. The first assessment shall be made immediately after the assessor shall qualify for office, and the subsequent assessments shall be commenced upon the first Monday in March, and finished and delivered to the Trustees on the second Monday in April each year, when the Board of Trustees shall sit as a Board of Equalization, for at least three and not more than eight days. As soon as the work of equalization is completed a tax must be levied sufficient in each year to pay all the interest accruing on all the bonds issued during the year, and all the expenses of collection of said tax, also sufficient to create a redemption fund of not less than two hundred and fifty, nor more than two thousand dollars annually. Said taxes shall be a lien upon all the property in the district upon which they are assessed, which lien shall attach in each year on the second Monday in May and shall continue until the said taxes are fully paid, or until the property vests in a purchaser under a valid sale for the satisfaction of such taxes. The tax Assessor and collector shall have the same authority as County Assessor and Collector. The County Treasurer must keep the money in a separate fund. Whenever there shall be five hundred dollars in the Interest and Redemption Fund in excess of the amount required to pay the interest for [FROM LAST SATURDAY'S SECOND EDITION.] Let it be remembered that our prices for job printing of every kind are as low as those of any office in the county, and that our works compares favorably with that of any officer in the State. We solicit the patronage of our readers. Richard Heimann has taken the agency for a number of agricultural implements. Fritz Fischer has returned from San Francisco, with the intention of staying here permanently. Mr. N. C. Willard will leave for San Francisco in a week from to-morrow, to be gone two weeks. He goes to rainsack the markets of the metropolis for new and recherche articles for his store. The young friends of the Misses Rosa and Frances Schmidt gave them a "surprise" on Thursday evening. The Misses Schmidt, we learn, will leave for Germany in about a week or so, to be gone five years. Mr. M. L. Goodman, of Goodman & Rimpan, will leave for San Francisco in the course of a week or so to purchase a Spring stock of goods. In the meantime, the firn is selling at rates which are a great reduction from usual prices. We beg to refresh the memory of our readers by directing their attention to the collection of said tax, also sufficient to create a redemption fund of not less than two hundred and fifty, nor more than two thousand dollars annually. Whenever there shall be five hundred dollars in the Interest and Redemption Fund in excess of the amount required to pay the interest for that year, the Board of Trustees shall give notice that proposals will be received for the surrender of the bonds and accept the lowest bid offered until they have accepted an amount sufficient to exhaust the money in said fund, provided no bid for more than par value shall be accepted. In the year 1893 there shall be levied and collected a tax sufficient to pay all bonds then remaining unpaid. The Tax Assessor and Collector shall receive a compensation for services not to exceed one hundred, and seventy-five dollars per annum. No other officers shall receive any compensation for duties. The Board is authorized to sell the present school lot whenever they may deem it best, and apply the proceeds of such sale to the defraying of the expenses of building the new school house or to the redemption of the bonds. From the time of the issuance of any bonds until their payment and redemption, the boundaries of the district as now constituted and known shall not be diminished. The New School House. The Board of Trustees of Anaheim School District, held a meeting at Justice Athearn's office on Monday, to take action in accordance with the law recently enacted authorizing them to issue the bonds of the School District for the purpose of building a school house. The clerk was authorized to advertise for proposals to purchase the bonds and also for plans for the new school house. All possible haste will be used to hasten the building and before many months we shall be the possessors of a school house second to none in the county. In the year 1590, John Udall, a Puritan, was tried at Corydon for an alleged libel on Queen Elizabeth. Mr. George Augustus Sala, who is understood to edit the Echoes of the Week in the Illustrated London News, has evidently been studying the report of the case in the State Trials, if we may rely upon a note which we find in that column. It states that the Judge who presided urged the defendant to keep in mind the words of the 23d chapter of Exodus: "Thou shalt not rail upon the ruler of the people, for whosoever doctliso shall die the death." Now, it so happens that this text is not to be found in that chapter or anywhere else in the present authorized version of the Bible, and the doctrine of the court was no more scriptural than it was legal. We can hardly suppose that a Judge would dare to invent a text for the occasion, and the natural inference is that the language quoted must have been from some version of Exodus then current, quite different from ours. After all, though, it may prove to have been a misquotation on The young friends of the Emperor and Frances Schmidt gave them a "surprise" on Thursday evening. The Misses Schmidt, we learn, will leave for Germany in about a week or so, to be gone five years. Mr. M. L. Goodman, of Goodman & Rimpan, will leave for San Francisco in the course of a week or so to purchase a Spring stock of goods. In the meantime, the firm is selling at rates which are a great reduction from usual prices. We beg to refresh the memory of our readers by directing their attention to the ball of the Magnolia Club, which will take place on the 25th. It is time the ladies were deciding what kind of toilet to appear in, and it is time for gentlemen to make up their minds as to what particular lump of female loveliness he will favor with his company that evening. Since the above was in type, Mr. M. A. Mendelson, president of the Magnolia Club, desires us to say that it is intended that the ball shall be a full dress one. Some have been laboring under the impression that it was to be a calico ball. Hence this notice. Longerity of Trees. From observation made on specimens still in existence, the longevity of various trees has been estimated to be, in round numbers, as follows: Deciduous cypress, 6,000 years; baobab trees, 5,000; Dragon tree, 5,000; yew, 3,000; Cedar of Lebanon, 3,000; "great trees" of California, 3,000; chestnut, 3,000; olive, 2,500; oak, 1,600; orange, 1,500; Oriental plane, 1,200; cabbage palm, 700; lime, 600; ash, 400; cocoanut palm, 300; pear, 300; apple, 200; Brazil wine palm, 150; Scotch fir, 100, and the balm of Gilead about 50 years. Such examples are quite sufficient to prove the truth of a remark of Scheiden's that there seems to be "a possibility of a compound plant living on without end." Butterick's patterns and Lightning plaiters at Mrs. H. T. Yarndley's Millinery Parlors. The German pictures to be sent to the Paris Exhibition will number about 200, and will include some from the Emperor's collections. Major Bell, of Los Angeles, attorney for the claimants, has received an order of survey from the United States Surveyor General tor the Rancho Potrero de la Mission Viejo de San Gabriel, that has enjoyed a Rip Van Winkle sleep for 25 years. It is said to embrace some of the finest lands in El Monte. Lieut. Philip Reade has been invited by the government of Japan to take charge of the official system of telegraphs in that country. He is to get $7,000 a year for seven years. His acceptance is contingent upon his obtaining permission from the United States Government to go without prejudice to his position in the United States army. An exasperated citizen of Franklin, Va., bearing the honorable name of Henry Custis, has published a card in the local newspaper, which reads: "I have heard that some person, either in Franklin or Murfreesboro, has said that I cannot tell the time of day by a watch or clock. This I pronounce emphatically a lie, and I believe the man who told it knew it to be false at the time. Any one who may wish an explanation of what I say can come foward and get it." John W.
