Grasses for Lawns.
The San Francisco Bulletin, in answer to a correspondent who writes for information as to what kinds of grasses are best adapted to this climate, says:
The grass generally used in this state for lawns is the Kentucky lawn grass. In our dry summer climate, however, this grass requires frequent irrigation and will die without it, as the roots are not deep, but surface feeders? The top should also be kept cut close to keep it green and fresh.
Probably the next best grass for lawns is the Australian, or perennial rye grass. This is a more vigorous grower; has a broader leaf and more luxuriant appearance. It does not, however, make so close or good a soil, and also requires frequent irrigation and trimming in the summer season. The Bermuda grass is also used for lawns, and makes the most compact soil of all the grasses, and will live better in a dry climate and on a dry soil without irrigation. The strongest objection to the Bermuda grass is that it spreads so rapidly by runners that it is almost impossible to confine it where desired. It also spreads rapidly from the seed, which will mature if kept close within two inches of the surface. In regard to the effect of grasses upon trees, this depends very much upon the variety of the trees. If the trees are surface-feeders—sending their roots out horizontally near the surface, like the orange—the roots of the grass will injure them much more seriously than if they send their roots deep into the ground, like the walnut, and most nut-bearing trees. Then again, young trees are more affected by grass growing near older ones, whose roots are stronger and more vigorous. If it be desired to grow trees in a lawn, it would be better to plant out the trees where desired, and cultivate all the soil for a few years before sowing the grass.
In this way they will have gained greater strength to resist the sapping influences of the grass roots. A good mulching about the tree with well-rotted manure, with frequent irrigation, will also materially assist in counteracting the influence of the grass.

[FROM LAST SATURDAY'S SECOND EDITION]
Let it be remembered that our prices for job printing of every kind are as low as those of any office in the county, and that our work compares favorably with that of any office in the State. We solicit the patronage of our readers.
A number of tramps have drifted into town from some portion of the county. They will be liable to find this an unhealthy place for gentlemen of their calling.
Vandiver Corn Planter at the Grange Store, Los Angeles.
The Primary School House was broken into on Thursday night. The desk was forced open but it contained nothing of value. The clock and some other articles were stolen.
The Champion Mowers and extras can be found at the Grange Store, Los Angeles.
Parker, found guilty of murder in the second degree, has been sentenced to imprisonment for ten years. He was admitted to bail in the sum of $5,000, pending an appeal to the Supreme Court.

Canary Wine.
Famous as Canary wine was during the Elizabethan era, it is now scarcely known in England. Since the vineyards were attacked by the oidium in 1852 little wine has been produced and far less exported from the Canaries. Between 1830 and 1840 the vintage in the seven principal islands of the group averaged over 46,000 pipes yearly; and of these more than half were contributed by Teneriffe, which shipped between 4,-000 and 5,000 pipes per annum—equivalent to the present product of the whole island, whence only soffé 200 or 300 pipes are nowadays exported to England, Russia, France, Hamburg, the West Indies, and the West Coast of Africa.
Turkish Coffee.
One of the drinks most frequently taken by the Turks is coffee, but this differs essentially from the infusion of coffee-bean customary among us. Turkish coffee is used without milk and sugar, is unfiltered, and has thus all the grounds. It is often drunk in such quantities as to seem to us fabulous. Many a Turk drinks eighty cups of coffee daily. From the peculiar mode of roasting the coffee-beans, and the skillful way of infusion—to insure which special cooks in wealthy Turkish households are appointed who are called "kahicedeschei"—a liquid is obtained much more concentrated and containing a far richer aroma than that met with in Western Europe.
“Octonary.”
The number nine has always been, and still is, remarked as possessing uncommon powers and producing coincidences in an extraordinary degree. Yet there can scarcely be a greater number of coincidences than were exemplified in the number eight in the life of the Caliph Motsesse, called, from his accidental claims, by the name of “Octonary.” He gained eight battles against the enemies of the Koran; he was the eighth of the Abbasides; he reigned eight years, eight months, and eight days; he left eight sons, eight daughters, eight thousand slaves, and eight millions of gold.
There is a ghoul in Washington. One of the cleverest of the score or more of female writers there has been busily at work for some months past in collecting materials concerning the morality of our great men, as a new argument in favor of giving women the right to vote and hold office. She proposes to unveil the domestic life of Washington, to unearth the confession of Hamilton, to re-enter the patriarchal role by the Federalists about

A gentleman of this city yesterday opened a Los Angeles orange and found inside, near the stem end, a little orange about an inch long and three-quarters wide. This orange may furnish an argument for Darwin, as it appears to be disposed to reproduce its kind by a process at least suggestive of the higher animals.—San Francisco Alta.
The Tiger Sulkey Horse Rake at the Grange Store, Los Angeles.
The Arizona Sentinel, after quoting the description of the algaroba tree, given by our Orangethorpe correspondent, says:
This "algaroba" is simply the ordinary mezquite tree that grows so profusely on all the bottoms of this part of Arizona. Its full name is algaroba glandulosa. The mezquite bearing the screw pod is called the prosopis pubescens.
The Sacramento correspondent of the San Francisco Alta writes:
I hear that ex-Governor Stanford had a conversation with Kearney, at the Palace Hotel, on Saturday last. The Governor showed to Kearney that the railroad was in truth the laboring man's friend, and pointed to the great amount of work that would have to be paid for repairing the Vallejo Railroad alone, not counting the labor that would have to be obtained to make good the damages on the Southern and Northern line. They say Kearney was considerably impressed by this or some other means, and has materially, if not wholly, abated his own work and that of his friends to secure more distinct legislation in the matter of the regulation of fares and freights.
The Germans after a hard tussle, settled on the name "fernsprecher" for the word telephone. But one suggestion said to have been made for that, fortunately, did not receive adoption—that of "doppelstahlblechzungenprecher." Of it the Scientific American says: The jaw can be replaced by pressing on the lower molars with the fingers, and guiding the muscles with the thumbs.
There is a ghoul in Washington. One of the cleverest of the score or more of female writers there has been busily at work for some months past in collecting materials concerning the morality of our great men, as a new argument in favor of giving women the right to vote and hold office. She proposes to unveil the domestic life of Washington, to unearth the confession of Hamilton, to revive the stories told by the Federalists about Jackson, to give some forgotten chapters of the earlier and the latter life of Jackson, to give circulation again to Ingersoll's stories about Webster, to publish Johnson's outrageous deportment, and to create a sensation in Massachusetts by a narrative which the public there have longed, yet dreaded, to hear. The privacy of the dead is to be quisitively invaded to ascertain whether in their lives they conformed to the Ten Commandments. Of course these scandalous chronicles will alternate between piquant truth and gross libel.
A Manchester (England) physician, Dr. Compton, who has made a study of the care of infants, gives some information of great importance to mothers in regard to a cause of the common deformities known as bow legs and knock knees. He attributes the first mentioned distortion to a habit some youngsters delight in of rubbing the sole of one foot against that of the other; some will go to sleep with the soles pressed together. They appear to enjoy the contact only when the feet are naked; they don't attempt to make it when they are socked or slippered. The remedy is simply to keep the baby's soles covered. Knock knees the doctor ascribes to a different childish habit, that of sleeping on the side, with one knee tucked into the hollow behind the other. Here the preventive is to pad the inside of the knees, so as to keep them apart, and the limbs grow freely.
A Bordeaux journal states that a wine grower in the Gironde has discovered a means of getting rid of the phylloxera. He has renmarked that a parasite of the strawberry plant carried on a war of extermination against that insect, and that where the strawberry was grown among the vines they have not been attacked.
