[FROM LAST SATURDAY'S SECOND EDITION.] —A bill, authorizing the Board of Supervisors of Los Angeles county to pay George C. Knox four years' salary for his services as Superintendent of Irrigation, has passed both Houses. The pastor of St. Michael's church informs us that Rev. Mr. Hill will not preach in Anaheim to morrow, as announced in our last issue. The postponement is unavoidable. The rain on Tuesday amounted to ½ of an inch. It again began about 3 o'clock yesterday morning, and continued all day. About 1¼ inches had fallen up to the hour of our going to press, making the total for the season 9½ inches. Although more than a month's notice was given of the Masquerade ball, there is the usual number who have put off procuring costumes until the last moment, and are even now frantically telegraphing to San Francisco for the desired articles. A fatal disease has prevailed for some time past among the cattle about Compton. Mr. Morton reports the loss of eight cows. The ORIZABA calls at Santa Barbara, Port Hartford (San Luis Obispo), and San Simeon. The LOS ANGELES calls at San Buenaventura, Santa Barbara, Garcia, Port Hartford (San Luis Obispo), and, going north, at Cayucos. RATES OF FARE. (Payable in Gold.) About 1½ inches had fallen up to the hour of our going to press, making the total for the season 9½ inches. Although more than a month's notice was given of the Masquerade ball, there is the usual number who have put off procuring costumes until the last moment, and are even now frantically telegraphing to San Francisco for the desired articles. A fatal disease has prevailed for some time past among the cattle about Compton. Mr. Morton reports the loss of eight cows from this fatal malady. From the symptoms described it appears to be a splenic fever, with inflammation of the kidneys, and fatal in all cases of which we have heard. Doubtless it is the Texas cattle disease, and should receive immediate attention from our best medical authorities.—Republican. An impecunious tramp wandered into the store of one of our friends yesterday. He informed the store keeper that he was hungry and would like a small donation of filthy lucre to purchase his breakfast. He had been a millionaire in his time, but owing to a collapse in the stock market he had become a dependent on the charities of the benevolent public. His demands were modest; he was certain he could procure, what to him would be a bountiful repast, for twenty-five cents. He did not care for quail on toast. His stomach had been spoiled by luxuries of that kind. The store keeper told him that he was not in the habit of giving away cash and as the price of silver was fluctuating he could not be quite certain as to the exact value of any donation he might make. He offered the seedy gentleman a large piece of cheese, which was accepted and stowed away in a remarkably capacious pocket. He then handed out a liberal supply of crackers. The trump held them a few moments in his hand and gazed wistfully at the stock displayed upon the shelves and said: "Look here, Mister, can't you exchange them crackers for a box of sardines," and that cruel store keeper commanded the modest trump to lay those crackers on the counter if he did not want them, and to leave the store. "Sich is life." The "monster cat" is claimed by a man living near Richmond, Mo. The animal is of the common species, of a yellow color, 14 in. high, 32 in. from the tip of the tail to the nose, weighs 37 pounds, and is something over three years old.
