Temple It is Dr. Fordyce Baker's opinion that city women are healthier and handsomer than country, women, as a result of better food and more diversion, and as for the women of the Metropolis, he says to a World reporter: "They are the finest in the world—physically, in point of figure, development, and grace. I have been in Europe a good deal, and I find the women here better specimens than those in London, Paris, Berlin, or Vienna. There has been a marked change in American womanhood within twenty years. Our girls now growing, or just grown, are magnificent specimens. The old follicles of dress, such as tight lacing, are done. New York women wear fannels now, and thick soles to their shoes, and their corsets are loose." The New York Daily Advertiser of June 4, 1823, says: "A novel sight was presented yesterday in Maiden lane by the removal of a three-story brick house entire and without the slightest injury. It is the building later occupied by Messrs. Clark, druggists." Mr. Brown, a Massachusetts engineer, did the work—the first accomplished in this country with a building entirely of brick. A colored lawyer has presented credentials from South Carolina courts of his good standing as a lawyer in that State to the Superior Court of Fulton county, Ga., and asked admission to the bar. He was rigidly examined by a committee of lawyers. Three reported favorably and one adversely. He has not been admitted yet. The hitch is in his color, not in any ignorance of law. [FROM LAST SATURDAY'S SECOND EDITION.] The recent storms have deepened the Wilmington channel, and now there is a depth of 10½ feet at extremely low tide. We have to record another fine shower as occurring on Tuesday and Wednesday. One-fourth of an inch fell. Total for the season, 6¼ inches. Nearly three hundred invitations to the Masquerade Ball have been issued. It is probable that some to whom it was intended invitations should be sent, have been overlooked, and to such the managers desire to make ample apology. At the meeting of the Town Trustees, held yesterday, Mr. Tim Boege was authorized to continue the grading of Centre Street commenced on Tuesday. The delinquent tax list was ordered advertised according to law, and the Marshal was ordered to report on the number of dog licenses issued last year, with a view to collecting the same for the coming year. The delinquent tax list was ordered advertised according to law, and the Marshal was ordered to report on the number of dog licenses issued last year, with a view to collecting the same for the coming year. The Silver Mines. Mr. J. W. Clark and party, who have been prospecting in the Santiago hills for the past week, have returned. They have located several silves ledges, which they believe to be extremely rich. Mr. Pullen took some of the rock to Los Angeles, and it assayed by fire test $40 to the ton. Messrs. Thistlewaite, Dunlap & Co. are now preparing to ship ten tons of ore to San Francisco. There is no road to their mine, and they are now making a trail so that pack animals can reach it. Medura Canyon, where the mines are situated, is ten miles above the coal mines and twenty-five miles from Anaheim. There are now fifteen to twenty men at work prospecting, and as there seems to be no reasonable doubt that further developments will give increased confidence in the district and attract quite a population, Mr. Clark has taken time by the forelock and surveyed off a town site. For that purpose he purchased the bee ranch of Mr. Alvord. The embryo town is called Silverado. Wozencraft's Scheme. WASHINGTON, Jan. 31.—The Commissioner of the General Land Office has written a report upon the Wozencraft bill, providing for the reclamation of the Yuma desert. The Commissioner, in response to inquiries of the House Committee, says that, inasmuch as under existing laws fertile lands are all given away to actual settlers, there seems to be no especial reason why desert lands may not also be so disposed of, particularly where the recipient goes to the expense of renderin-them arable by irrigation. He finds that this bill is extremely defective in many specified respects, such as its failure to define exact boundaries, or to provide what shall be considered efficient irrigation, or to indicate the manner of payment to be made by beneficiaries when their title is perfected. In a spirit of conciliation, the Mobile Register remarks that Lincoln was a bloody buffoon. Commercial Restaurant! Centre Street, Anaheim.
