[FROM LAST SATURDAY'S SECOND EDITION.] Several sacks of coal were brought in yesterday from the coal mine, to be used in experimenting at Miles Bros'. steam mill. Five-eighths of an inch of rain fell in Anaheim on Thursday night, making a total for the season of 6½ inches. In Los Angeles they claim 9.15 inches for the season. A ton of rock from the mine in Santiago Canyon, owned by Thistlewaite & Harvey, assayed 356.19 silver, 3.10 gold, and 23.5 per cent. lead. The assay was made in Los Angeles. We acknowledge the receipt of an invitation to the ball to be given by the Fairview Recreation Club at Grange Hall on the evening of Feb. 14th. Owing to the peculiar construction of our mud paddles we are obliged to decline. We are informed that the Panamint mines have been finally abandoned. At a depth of 700 feet the rock turned into barren white quartz. Some $1,700,000 were expended on the mines, mill and hoisting works, and $400,000 in bullion were taken out—Republican. Owing to the peculiar construction of our mud paddles we are obliged to decline. —We are informed that the Panamint mines have been finally abandoned. At a depth of 700 feet the rock turned into barren white quartz. Some $1,700,000 were expended on the mines, mill and hoisting works, and $400,000 in bullion were taken out. —Republican. Green, the colored "individual" who supplements the legal proceedings at the Los Angeles Court House, by sweeping, dusting, making fires, etc., was asked the other day by a witness from the country, who was trying to kill time while waiting to be called, if he ever drank anything, when he proceeded to show his ivory, and responded: "Yes, sah, I drinks, I wouldn't belong to the Court House click if I didn't drink!" —Santa Monica Outlook. Some of the "click" were in Anaheim the other night. The subjoined bill and resolution were introduced by Judge Holloway in the Assembly on Monday: An Act authorizing the Board of Supervisors of Los Angeles county to allow the claim of Ignatio Botiller, ex-Treasurer of said county, for services rendered said county during the years 1872-71. Referred to the Los Angeles delegation. Whereas, The present time fixed by law for the payment of city and county taxes is burdensome and oppressive, not only to the taxpayers of the State, but has a depressing influence upon all classes of business; therefore be it Resolved, By the Assembly, the Senate concurring, that a Committee of three members of this House and three members of the Senate be appointed for the purpose of preparing amendments to the present law, making taxes payable either semi-annually or quarterly, as in their judgment may seem best, and report the same either to the House or Senate at an early day. In the Senate, a bill has been introduced, and referred to the Committee on Agriculture providing for the encouragement of the planting of forest trees, by paying a small sum for each when they have been cultivated four years. Persons cutting down a tree must plant another of the same, or some others species, capable of cultivation in this State, in its stead. Default is made a misdemeanor. A recent return shows that infant mortality in Holland exceeds that in England and Wales by fifty-five per cent. This is what keeps down the Dutch population. No cause is assigned. BANK OF ANAHEIM.
