Temple shrink from using all the power at my command to preserve the peace of the city and county. Such assemblies, wherever held, in halls, upon the streets or on the sand lots, will be suppressed and the supremacy of law and order resolutely maintained. (Signed) A. J. Bryant, Mayor City and County of San Francisco. Mayor Bryant held a consultation with Gen. McDowell and Gen. McComb to-day. The militia will be kept on duty for the present, and all means adopted necessary for the preservation of peace. Kearney and associates, including, in addition to those previously mentioned, J. A. Hayward, who was arrested to-day, remain in custody in default of bail. During the afternoon the crowd gathered in the neighborhood of the City Criminal Court, where the agitators were being tried, became in a few individual instances rather unruly and two or three were arrested. Knight, Kearney, Wellock, Merriam and Downey, the incendiary orators, have been arrested and held to heavy bail, which has not yet been furnished. The militia are on guard duty during the night. The city is quiet and no meetings are being held. Kearney says that, hereafter, all their meetings will be held on Thursday afternoons, on the sand lots. Tilden's Demurrer Sustained New York, Jan. 19th.-Arguments in the case of the United States vs. Samuel J. Tilden, to recover $3,000 as an annual income tax for the year 1861, with interest from the 30th of June 1862, were begun this morning in the United States District Court. There are nine counts in the complaint, to all of which demurrer is made on technical grounds, the merits of the case not being gone into. It was decided to take each count separately. The first count charges $3,000 back tax for the fiscal years 1861-62. Tilden's counsel claim that the laws passed about that time were recognized as necessary war measures and annulled the law requiring the payment of income tax in that year. Judge Blatchford sustained the demurrer, giving Tilden the first victory. TOWN OFFICERS. Treasurer..... Theo. Rimpan Assessor..... H. Blanken Marshal..... L. Wartenberg Recorder..... A. [FROM LAST SATURDAY'S SECOND EDITION.]—A meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Anaheim Cemetery Association will be held this afternoon. In the case of E.R. Thompson vs. W.H.Tichenal, a suit to recover value of goods sold at Sheriff's sale, before Justice Athearn on Thursday, the jury found a verdict for the plaintiff in the sum of $214. At the entertainment given for the benefit of the Episcopal Church on Thursday evening the receipts were fifty-eight dollars, The historical tableaux given by the Orange Literary Society were excellent and much enjoyed by the audience. A hot oyster supper was provided and the company lingered around the tables until a late hour. By an unforeseen accident, the printing of the invitations and cards of admission to the Masquerade Ball has been delayed. They will, however, be ready in a day or two, and as we have been instructed by the Committee to spare no expense, we rather flatter ourselves that it will as nice a job as could be done anywhere. The Committee are making lavish preparations for the entertainment. The Anaheim Water Company held a meeting on Wednesday. The Committee are making lavish preparations for the entertainment. The Anaheim Water Company held a meeting on Wednesday. The committee reported that Mr. Shanklin had rejected the agreement proposed to be entered into with the Cajon Irrigation Company. It was then resolved to employ an engineer to make an estimate of the cost of a ditch. For this purpose, a committee will be appointed at a meeting to be held at 2 o'clock this afternoon. The Situation Dangerous. San Francisco, January 17.—The speeches of the agitators, Kearney, Knight, et al., were so exceedingly incendiary on Tuesday night that the authorities have become really alarmed. Inquiries developed the fact that purchases of arms and ammunition had already been made by the agitators. Mayor Bryant has issued the following proclamation: Whereas, Persons assemble in this city and county and threaten to commit offenses against the property and lives of the inhabitants; and, whereas, such assemblies are not held for any lawful purpose, but to create disturbances in which public offenses may be committed; Now, therefore, by virtue of the authority vested in me by law as Mayor of this city and county, I do hereby declare that such assemblies are unlawful and will not be permitted, but will be dispersed, and all persons composing them or taking part in them will be arrested; and I advise all persons to stay away from such meetings and not to be present as spectators, from curiosity or any other idle motive, for such attendance encourages those engaged in promoting disturbances, interferes with the operations of those who seek to keep the peace, and may result in harm to the innocent as well as guilty. I trust that the men who guide these assemblies will not compel the use of force in securing obedience to the law, as I shall not PACIFIC COAST STEAMSHIP COMPANY. GOOSE NORTH. LEV. SANTA MONICA.
