Temple About the Grade of the Streets. Mr. Reiser, President of the Board of Town Trustees, having written to surveyor Hansen in regard to completing his maps of Anaheim, received the following reply: LOS ANGELES, Jan. 10th, 1878. Mr. Reiser:—I have made several trial profiles, but they don't satisfy me, it is an easy matter to make a grade, but it is laborious to make the best possible grade, that is to say, the one which secures good draining at the least possible amount of digging, cutting and filling. Considering that it is a matter of consequence to your town to save $10,000 to $15,000 balance, I think that it would be wrong to hurry now the most important part of my work, and fix blindly a grade, which would result in expense and vexation to your town. Many cities have been put to a great deal of trouble, because in the establishment of grades the proper care, work and circumstances was not used. I have now Center Street, so that I think I need not change it again, and will have by to-morrow night the last changes of Lemon and Los Angeles worked out, and can in a few days more put it on paper and send it to you. Although you may feel somewhat impatient now, you will in the end not regret to have done so important a work as to the establishment of the grade in every respect well and carefully. Mr.H.D.Barrows exhibited in our sane Washington's Birthday have succeeded in obtaining sufficient signatures to warrant them in making preparations en a grand scale. The programme for the entertainment will be formally announced in a few days. — "Let me kiss those weeping eyes." The admirers of beautiful songs, such as the "Day when you'll forget me," etc., will find a valuable addition to their collection, in the above song, just published by M. Gray, 105 Kearney street, San Francisco, who will forward it on receipt of 35 cents in stamps. Mr. H. D. Barrows exhibited in our sanctum this morning a little branch of an orange tree bearing upon it ten well developed, evenly ripened oranges, clustered as thickly together as it would be possible to pack them in a box. The color of the fruit, it seemed to us, was the most bright and beautiful we had ever seen. Mr. Barrows informed us that the bunch grow upon a tree two years from the bud, upon the stock of a lemon. It was from the ranch of Barrows, Furrey & Co., in San Gabriel Valley. — Express. The sensation in town yesterday was the juvenile elopement of the night previous, wherein Johnny Massey, aged about fifteen, and Miss Anita Richard, of the same tender years, lit out together from the maternal roof, since which time no trace has been had of them. We understand that the joint capital of the youthful pair consisted of six dollars in money and a pair of valuable bracelets. It was at first supposed that they had gone to San Gabriel, where the girl has an aunt living, but inquiry in that direction failed to elicit anything to confirm that belief. The police have the matter in hand, and will no doubt discover their hiding place before long. — Star. In more than one of the Presbyterian churches in London the service is performed in a way which would have sent John Knox into fife. The psalms are intoned, and the Lord's Prayer repeated by the congregation present, as in the Church of England. The city election went by default. No one seemed to care a cent who held office, and we failed to hear of any candidates. — Arizona Sentinel. It is estimated that the population of San Francisco at the present time is about 320,000, of which some 35,000 are Chinese. THE Pacific Coast Steamship COMPANY.
