Fagan, deputy Postmaster at Downey, will soon remove to Colorado. The citizens of Downey have decided to petition the Legislature for a town charter. The State authorities have awarded the sum of $1,064 to the Los Angeles Guards for equipments and necessary expenses. One of the curious phenomena of the season is that while the water in the wells in town is very low, in the vicinity of Fairview it is very high. The Courier says that about one thousand pounds of vegetables and one hundred dozen eggs are shipped from Downey to Mojave every week. The Anaheim Water Company held a meeting yesterday and adjourned to meet this afternoon at Kroeger's Hall. The Town Trustees held a meeting yesterday, and ordered a letter to be written to Surveyor Hansen requesting him to fix the stakes for the grade of the streets. The surveying corps lately sent out to survey the Black Star Coal Mining Co.'s land have, owing to the severe rain storm, been compelled to suspend operations until the weather moderates. They report that grass in the Lomas de Santiago is looking finely. Under Sheriff Rowan and Mr. Pablo Pryor were among the visitors to our sanctum last evening. The rain brings all sorts of good things, and we deem it a good thing to have the genial Tom around, more especially when he assures us that he has no bills with him. All signs fail in wet weather. Although the barometer at Mr. Langenberger's has been set fair for two days, it has rained at intervals since Monday morning at 1 o'clock. Up to yesterday morning, according to Dr. Higgins' rain guage, one-half inch had fallen, making the total rainfall for the season four inches. A sable damsel, rejoicing in the name of Emma Doe, was brought to the court room on Monday by the valiant nightwatchman. She pled guilty to the charge of battery, the result of too much prayer meeting on Sunday night, and the combined attractions of a bottle of whiskey and a man named North. The Judge took compassion on her feeble condition and advised her to sin no more, and to go home and tell some one to put her in "little bed." It will be remembered that some weeks ago we published an account of the disappearance and recovery of young Suits, the principal witness of the murder of John V. Fonck at Santa Monica. The Grand Jury, whose report we publish to-day, have found indictments for misdemeanor against Col. J. G. Eastinan, R. S. Baker, and E. S. Parker. These gentlemen are charged with spiring away Suits their object being to obtain the discharge of Walter and Parker, the men indicted for Fonck's murder, through the absence of the principal witness for the prosecution. The auction store was the center of attraction last week. Nearly every woman in the town invested in pins, hair combs and shop-worn lacees. They jostled and squeezed and crowded in their frantic endeavors to purchase seal brown ribons that turned out to be plum-colored; stockings that were fitted for elephants; and fine tooth combs that were better fitted for hay rakes. But then everything was so cheap! Girls in their teens bought bibs for babies, and old ladies indulged in bogus jewelry and hair ribbons. For several days every man, woman and child was seen hurrying through the streets Wilson ties and adamant that he did not attack them with rioting threats and Constance Ranchito or twelve friends refused to change city where they lived in the sola leade Los Angeles been arrested. For several days every man, woman and child was seen hurrying through the streets with their arms loaded with remnants of laded velvet, piles of socks, and stores of pins and gutta porcha jewelry. Every cent which could be raked and scraped was poured into the insatiable coffers of the remorseless auction man, and he departed for fields and pastures new, while the penitent purchasers gaze upon their piles of cheap rubbish and their empty purses; and in the sadness of their hearts make solemn promises, to be broken as soon as the next auction store makes its appearance. Explosion at the Coal Mine. Last Friday while the men were at work in the air shaft of the Black Star Coal Mine, an explosion occurred which, though it did no serious damage, had the effect of giving those engaged on the works a very considerable scare. A blast had been put in and all things put in readiness for the removal of a few feet of rock, but to the astonishment of all when the fuse was ignited, instead of an ordinary blast, an explosion occurred, which sent a column of fire fully a hundred feet high and with it a shower of many tons of stone, from which it was evident that in addition to the regular charge of powder a carbonic gas tank had been exploded. The illumination is said to have presented a grand and appalling spectacle—a real Vesuviuson a small scale. It was fortunate for those working in the shaft that this explosion occurred in the manner described, as in case this volume of gas had been freed by any other process, the inhalation of it might have proven very deleterious to the health of the excavators. This is the first gas tank that has been encountered in the mine. WEEKLY HEIM, GALIFORNIA: SATURDAY, JANUARY 19, 1878. The Ranchito Riot. Mr. John McGarvin, constable of Los Nietos Township, call upon us this morning and gave us a full account of the late Ranchito difficulty, which is about the first full and authentic information concerning it which has yet been received in the city. According to this statement, a dozen or more men from the Los Nietos region and elsewhere in the vicinity set out to jump claims in the Rineon, north of the Ranchito, claiming that the tract was government land. Some seven or eight hundred acres have been held by Don Pio Pico for a long time, but it is now claimed that he has no valid title to the land. A few days ago a band of native Californians was organized at the Ranchito, numbering eighteen or twenty, under the leadership of one Anginaola, and after arming themselves, they proceeded to the Rineon. Encountering the surveying party of the squatters there, they ordered them to leave the premises, and, by a liberal display of firearms and knives, intimidated them. It is said also that they went so far as to seize the surveyors' claims and take some of their apparatus from them. The surveying party, being outnumbered and overawed, surrendered the field and packed their remaining equipments to leave. Meanwhile the band from Ranchito proceeded to make the rounds of the squatters, who were scattered about in different places, building cabins and measuring claims. They had warned one or two of these parties off when they came up to two brothers named Wilson, of El Monte, who were constructing a cabin. The Wilsons had been informed of the approach of the hostile party and accordingly Important to Irrigators. The Los Angeles Herald has received from an attache of the Irrigation Committee the following communication which will be found of great interest: SACRAMENTO, Jan. 9, 1878.—The Senate Committee on Irrigation, consisting of Senators Satterwhite, Fowler, Creed, Haymond, Brown of Amador, Brown of El Dorado, Dean and Goodwin, start on their investigating tour on Monday, January 14th. They will take evidence at nine o'clock in the morning at the following mentioned times and places: Modesto, January 14th, Merced City 15th, Fresno City 16th, Visalia 17th, Bakersfield 18th, Los Angeles 19th, San Bernardino 21st, 22d and 22d, Nevada 24th, Marysville 27th and San Francisco 28. The debate in the Senate on Mr. Haymond's resolutions was participated in by the leading minds in that body, and only one member raised any objection to it. It was urged that the subject of irrigation was one of the most important before the people at the present time. Years have been frittered away in the Legislature in indle disguasion upon the proper remedy for the evils complained of by the farmer and the miner. It will be the aim of the committee to make a thorough investigation of the subject in all its bearings, with a view of obtaining the necessary information to enable them to draft a bill which will satisfy the want of all classes, and which will insure a prompt settlement of this question, so important to the interests of the people and to the welfare of the State. The deposition of debris in our principal rivers from hydraulic mining will also receive due consideration at the hands of the Committee, and OLD BACHELORS. An Essay thereon Read by Mrs. New P. Lyman at the Westminster Railway on New Year's Day. My dear friends, a happy greeting to you and a happy New Year to all. The Honorable Committee on Exercise for this grand re-union day were so wise and thoughtless as to appoint me asist; subject; "Old Bachelor." Had given me house-cleaning, hog or corn raisin subduing alkali, sinking wells, hay-press cooking for threshers, washing and ironing in short any of the minor afflictions of age; with what joy I would have wielded pen in their defence, flattering myself. I might do the subject justice. But "Bachelor," O! Why the very name has lonely, weird kind of sound; and at arouses the sympathy of every kind-heart woman. I thought the task too great, begged the Committee to excuse me; they refused. Well, it has always been fate to go from poetry to potatoes,so I must laid down the dish-rag,and took up them and am expected to dish after these old souls without regard to their feeling saying "by your leave, sirs." Two things are very much against me; I have too much regard for them. I must term them the spruce trees of creation; they so tall so gaunt and green. 2d.The time too limited. You know, all naturalists note who wish to describe animals, insects, do not take hearsay, but go out and them; peep into their tiny homes and dens study their habits, learn all they see of them and then give the facts to the reader. And here it is but six days till this must be printed before the public. To be sure, some very wonderful things have been accomplished in that space time. The regular monthly meeting of the Horticultural Society was held Saturday morning at the Good Templar Hall, Los Angeles, Capt. C. E. Thom in the chair. In view of the fact that a committee from the State Senate would visit Los Angeles on Saturday next for the purpose of gaining information on the subject of irrigation, the Horticultural Society appointed a committee of Fifteen, to which the name of the Chairman was added, to take charge of the subject and present to the Legialstive Committee the views of the people of Southern California on this subject. The committee is composed as follows: J. de Barth Shorb, of San Gabriel; W. R. Olden, Anaheim; O. H. Bliss, Los Angeles; P. C. Green, Pasadena; Geo. D. Carleton, Riverside; Gov. J. G. Downey, P. Beaudry, A. B. Chapman, H. K. W. Bent, J. E. Hollenbeck, H. J. Crow, H. D. Barrows, L. M. Holt, of Los Angeles; A. R. Messerve, of Pomona; R. H. Gilman, of Anaheim and Capt. C. E. Thom. It is expected that the Committee will hold a meeting during the coming week, discuss the subject and be prepared to confer with the Irrigation Committee on its arrival. We understand that prominent citizens, not members of the Society, will be invited to assist the Committee. The subject of Northern Fruits was discussed at length, and some very valuable information imparted through letters and discussion. The same subject will be continued at the next meeting, and at the regular meeting in March, at which time the officers for the coming year will be elected. It is proposed to have a display of semi-tropical fruits. Osman Pasha was wont to personally thrash those of his soldiers who displayed marked cowardice during the siege of Plefna. In the Commune of Rivola d'Adda, in Italy, a woman has given birth to quintuplets, all living. A year ago she bore four children at a birth. The experiments were designed to test the power of the electric light in siege operations and to suggest any modifications of the apparatus at present in use, which might seem advisable. On the night of October 20th, Forts Frederic Charles and Alvensleben were illuminated by throwing the light upon them when it was found that at a distance of two to three kilometers, not only buildings, but individual men could be plainly made out. On the night of the 27th of October the electric apparatus was arranged on the exercising ground outside the Cambiere gate, and the light directed upon a row of targets. Fire was then opened against the latter by a squad of riflemen, and the practice made was nearly as good as that recorded on ordinary occasions when firing by day—a result which was considered exceedingly satisfactory, as a thick mist prevailed at the time and materially interfered with the action of the light. Altogether the committee concluded that the electric light may in future be employed with advantage, not only to seige operations, but also during outpost duty and engagements at night.—S. F. Stock Report. Charles Napier, an Englishman of good standing in science, has been testing the theory that alcoholic drink is compatible with animal food, but not with farinaceous. He announces, as the practical result of many experiments, that a vegetable diet is a remarkable help to the cure of drunkenness. He mentions the case of an old man, whose constitution had been shattered by repeated attacks of delirium tremens, and who was cured of his appetite for liquor in seven months by echewing meat. Some too sorrowful to mention. One dreadful to think young ladies will hard-hearted, and say such unkind things meek, mild brothers, dotted over land (I have no reference to Westminster like telegraph posts, speaking monument their own folly; with that far-off, we look so sad to see, as though they had something or some one, and were just going up in deep despair, hoping the world is safe to their intentions. Didn't those girls laugh? We had to press the sash down to raise spring. I fear the girls were excited pressed too hard. How he did groan-kick! The sash went up and he went with a thud; a streak of coat went round corner, and the girls laughed to their satisfaction. Poor B. kept his bed for two days and went to San Francisco for treatment. Some of them do hang on and to a great age, objects of pity, often of sensation, but at best a poor, miserable man. I asked several young ladies what thought of old baches, so will give you replies: I think they are a nuisance in land. I'll tell you just what an old always reminds me of: half a pair of sci-fi think of him! Why. I think he is just a cheese the mice have ate the inside about of, leaving the shell, just an appearance. JANRY 19, 1878. WILD BACHELORS. Thereon Read by Mrs. Nettle Jan at the Westminster Relation on New Year's Day. friends, a happy greeting to you, by New Year to all. Remarkable Committee on Exercises for grand re-union day; were so unoughtless as to appoint me essayist; "Old Bachelors." Had they mouse-cleaning, hog or corn raising, kali, sinking wells, hay-pressing, threshers, washing and ironing, key of the minor afflictions of the what joy I would have wielded my defence, flattering myself that the subject justice. But "Old O! Why the very name has a word kind of sound; and at once sympathy of every kind-hearted thought the task too great, and the Committee to excuse me, but good. Well, it has always been my from poetry to potatoes, so I meekly the dish-rag, and took up the pen sected to dash after these dear without regard to their feelings, or your leave, sir." Bugs are very much against me; 1st, much regard for them. I used to the spruce trees of creation; they look gaint and green. 2d. The time is I. You know, all naturalists of wish to describe animals, insects, take hearsay, but go out among into their tiny homes and dingy by their habits, learn all they can and then give the facts to the world. It is but six days till this must be more the public. Here is a kind of historical soliloquy of one of these forlorn creatures, who had just come to this point, this lonely period of existence: As he sits musing he thinks how pleasant it would be to have friends call and ask for the health of Mrs. Fitzfool. He is a little deaf; so takes the meat out of his pork barrel to put his head in to see how it would sound to say "My wife!" Now, that sounds good. He gets enthusiastic and repeats, Mrs. Fitzfool, Mrs. Ichabod Fitzfool, Mr. and Mrs. Ichabod Fitzfool." O, music sweet! Did mortal ears ever list to strains so lovely, so enchanting? Never mine before. "I must look about me yet and get a wife!" With smiling face he repacks his meat and prepares his supper, but has no appetite. Who, after indulging in such a sweet romance, could come down to mortal's food? Not he. He takes his evening Gazette; but when he puts on his slippers they look so thread-bare, and his socks are minus heel and toe. "Alas! if I had a wife this would not be so; these socks would be neatly darned, without great, uncomfortable humps such as I make, and loving hands would minister to all my wants." He breaks down andemoans his fate. "O, wretched, miserable man that I am; why have I wasted my life? I thought it was smart to say I did not care for woman's love when I really did; I see my folly now, and in dreams by night and in visions by day I stretch my arms for some loving embrace, but they return void, and remorse fills my soul," and with tears streaming down his face, he cries, "O, if I could only go back 30 years, I'd not rest till I found some one to love and have me; yes, if I could go back 25 years, what years of comfort might be mine; why 20 years would make me a grand home; what would I not give to redeem the past, the bitter, squandered past? O! for 15—10, yea, even five years; just for a taste of real life ere I go hence forever more. Even this poor boon is denied me. O! my lone heart! Henceforth I must sit at my lone heartstone." And yet there's nine spinsters; Who believe me deer fate— There's two dozen wolves; Who'd change their estate. There's silly young maids— Who blush at my bow; All—all bent on marrying me; Anyway—no matter bew. [How I wish they would. O! any one.] I walk forth in trembling; I come home in drear; I don't fear my heart— But I do fear my head! My vigilant speech Is a growl and a nod; And that Heaven save me— Is charmingly odd. [And helps to keep me odd.] So laifes—dear ladies Just hear me I pray; I speak to you all In a pluralist way; My logic is simple As logic can be; If I don't marry you, Pray—don't marry me. [No longer any hope...] "Good by, dear pen. Its my last effort. I can cheat the world, but not my poor self while this aching heart cries out so bitterly against it, and so longs for the long ago when I might have been a man among men. I have tried to brave it through. O! its harrowing to think of. After all what am I but a blank—a miserable old bachelor—for-lorn, almost forgotten." He could say no more—drew on his nightcap and folded his garments about him for the night. So we leave him. I have always been taught that there was some wise purpose for every created being—for everything—nothing made in vain. But of what earthly use these bachelors can be, is more than I know. I cannot understand them; they are beyond my comprehension. I still flatter myself, that the time will come when their usefulness will be known. I don't know but they may be a reserve corps to found orphan asylums and homes for good old men. The putty hearted ones may make pretty good foster mothers. But dear pity the poor little elfs who fall into the hands of these old stony hearts who have withstood Cupid's arrows for 60 years. One of my friends said these ought to have without regard to their feelings, or your leave, sirs." You know, all naturalists of fish to describe animals, insects, take hearsay, but go out among into their tiny homes and dingy their habits, learn all they can and then give the facts to the world.
