How doth the busy nurseryman improve each shining hour, And peddle seeds, sprouts and seeds of every shrub and flower. How busy he wags his chin, How neat he spreads his store, And sells us things that never grow And won't grow any more. Who showed the little man the way To sell the women seed! Who taught him how to blow and lie, And coax and beg and plead! He taught himself, the nurseryman, And when his day is done, We'll plant him where the lank, rank weeds Will flutter in the sun. But oh! although we plant him deep Beneath the buttercup, He's so much like the seed he sells, He never will come up! —Burlington Harvey. COAL AND SILVER. Latest from the Mines in the Santiago. A Gazette reporter has returned from a tour of investigation among the mines of the Santiago. The coal mines were the first visited, and an interview with Dr. Witte, the discoverer, disclosed the very welcome information that the prospects already brilliant, were growing more encouraging as work progressed. Every day shows marked improvement. Coal has been found in as many as twenty different localities upon the claim—carrying convictions to the minds of the most skeptical that Los Angeles county is the possessor of a coal deposit which promises to be one of the most valuable ever discovered in the United States. It is not necessary that this mine should be greater in extent to make it the most valuable in the land, but the fact of its being located in the heart of a rich and well settled agricultural country, covering countless acres capable of supporting millions of souls, where the fuel supply is already meagre and growing more so as the demand increases, and the supply grows beautifully less—this fact is wherein the BLACK STAR COAL MINES Holds its prestige over those splendid deposits of other parts where, as well as coal, TOWN OFFICERS Treasurer Thea Eimpan Assessor H. [FROM LAST SATURDAY'S SECOND EDITION.]—Rev J.C. Ardis, of Los Nietos, was buried with Masonic honors at Savannah on Christmas. The Amateur Dramatic troupe is progressing finely, and their play will soon be ready to put upon the stage. It will be the affair of the season. The trial of the coal from the Black Star Coal Mine on board the steamer Newport on her last trip to San Francisco, proved a complete success. A careful test was made and the coal was found equal to the best English coal for steam purposes. This is indeed a triumph for the Witte Bros. Osman Pasha to be Court-Martialed. New York, Dec. 28.-The Herald's London special correspondent, at Bucharest telegraphs that it is currently rumored and generally believed there that Osman Pasha will be tried by a military court of the highest jurisdiction, for the slaughter of the wounded after the great battle of July 31st, the fight before the Gravitza redoubt on Sept. 11th, and several other minor engagements. The discoveries made by the Russians since occupying the fortifications at Plevna, together with information gained from Turkish officers, and, above all, the ab- BLACK STAR COAL MINES Holds its prestige over those splendid deposits of other parts where, as well as coalf, there are extensive forests to divert the patronage and keep down the prices of the former Here the best cannail coal is worth $30 per ton, and the cheapest coal is worth $11.50 At either figures the owners of the Black star mine hold a decided advantage over the producers of corresponding coals in other localities; and another important fact is that the coal from this mine is possessed of very superior burning qualities Many of our citizens who have had large experience in coal mining and its use in various areas have given these coals a most thorough coat and we are unable to find a single individual who is not loud in the praises of the Black Star diamonds So seductive have been the prospects in this mine, that some of our keenest business men have taken hold with the Messrs, Witte, and the Black Star Company, with a capital stock of $500,000, represented by 5000 shares at $100 per share, has been incorporated for the working of the mine. THE INCORPORATORS Are Win A. Witte, of Louis Mo., B.F.Seibert, of Anaheim; Dr. August Witte and H.A.Barclay of Los Angeles county, and W.H.Spurgeon of Santa Ana These gentlemen propose to work the mine with a large force as soon as the organization is complete Having as yet held no election we are unable to inform our readers who will hold the "high places;" suffice in that the mines are now in the hands of our presentative business men which will provide successful management of one of Angeles County's many bonanzas. A small force is at work on the mines at present sinking an air shaft, and though their object has not been the search of coal in this shaft, yet every foot of it has been cut through carboniferous matter—improving as the shaft attains greater depth We are informed that the company will have a town site surveyed and will probably put up shops, store and boarding houses right away, also dispose of lots to those who may desire to start business at that point. THE SILVER MINES. From the coal mines our reporter went to the silver mines further up the canyon These mines were discovered last summer by a party of gentlemen who made several locations which they have worked, and from some of which they have very encouraging prospects The Southern Belle, Mammoth, Greylack, and an extension on the latter which is now being worked by Messrs Thistlewaite & Co., are the more important Osman Pasha to be Court-Martialed. New York, Dec. 28.—The Herald's London special correspondent, at Bucharest telegraphs that it is currently rumored and generally believed there that Osman Pasha will be tried by a military court of the highest jurisdiction, for the slaughter of the wounded after the great battle of July 31st, the fight before the Gravitz redoubt on Sept. 11th, and several other minor engagements. The discoveries made by the Russians since occupying the fortifications at Plevna, together with information gained from Turkish officers, and above all, the absence of Russian prisoners, although many had been captured during all the engagements, leaves no reasonable doubt that the Turks under Osman Pasha have been guilty of deeds which will render his now illustrious name forever infamous. It will be remembered that in August 1865 a special military commission sat in Washington to try Wirz, charged with destroying the lives of soldiers confined in Anderson Military Prison. The crimes of which Wirz was convicted, and for which he was afterwards hanged, were less offensive to the code of modern warfare than those imputed to Osman Pasha. Every day brings to light some new horror at Plevna. A bachelor permitted himself to be inveigled into Boston's baby-show, and it was nearly the death of him. He stopped to gaze at a sweet cherub of one hundred and fifty pounds, with ears like full-grown cabbage leaves, a mouth of much amplitude, and lungs of more than Keely motor power. While wondering whether the infant would develop into a President of the United States or disgrace his doting parents by joining a base-ball club, the youngster opened its entire face back to the ears, and set up a yell. And such a yell! Before the bachelor could hurry away, the mother caught her infant in her arms, and crowed, "What's the matter with mamma's precious petty-wetty? Did the nasty-pasty, ugly-pugly man frighten mammy-wammy's darling baby-waby?" The bachelor fainted dead away, and was not restored to consciousness for two hours. Speaking at Cardiff, Wales, lately, Lord Aberdare, formerly a police magistrate in the centre of the Welsh mining district, and afterwards Secretary of State for the Home Department, said that he had not known things so bad for forty-five years, and that many persons in South Wales were dying for want of the common necessities of life. The same story comes from many other manufacturing districts. "Does this razor take hold well?" asked the smiling barber. "Yes," replied the unhappy victim, "it takes hold well, but it don't let go worth a cent." AGRICULTURAL Implements! Season of 1876-7 Barrows, Furrey & Co. Of Los Angeles.
