Anaheim Literary Society.
The Anaheim Literary Society met on Thursday evening at Kroeger's Hall. Notwithstanding the indications of rain, a large number were in attendance. It was extremely gratifying to the members of the Society that so many ladies were present to lend encouragement to the enterprise, but it does not speak remarkably well for the gallantry of our young men that so many were without escorts. We saw one gentleman with four ladies under his charge, and a number of girls who "hadn't a stick to stand by." If the young gentlemen cannot take the trouble to invite and escort the ladies, they certainly should not grumble at a lack of interest in their entertainments.
The declarations were well rendered. The question, Resolved, That the Government should indemnify individuals for damage done by niobs, was discussed with much spirit, and decided in favor of the affirmative by a committee consisting of Messrs. Kellogg, Evans, and Fuller.
The report of the Committee on Arrangements for a new hall was accepted, and a committee consisting of Messrs. Montgomery, Rimpau and Leonard were appointed to carry out the arrangements recommended.
The meeting then adjourned to meet at Judge Bailey's new office on Centre street next Thursday evening, when the following question will be discussed: Resolved, That the quantity of land held by one person shall be limited to one thousand acres. Messrs. Henderson, Payne and Mendelson for the affirmative, and Messrs. Guinn, Montgomery and Grimshaw for the negative. Declamations will be given by Messrs. Austin and Beebe.
The other day a New York teamster was brutally beating a bay mule with a paint brush tail, when Henry Bergh, President A.S.P.C.A., rushed in and caught the fellow's uplifted arm and cried, "Stay! Hold!" Just then the mule, who had reserved his fire until some one came in range, looked back, and fired a ninety-four pound hoof that caught Mr. Bergh about midships, and sourced all the milk of human kindness in his hold quicker than a thunderclap. "Kill him!" hissed the great philanthropist between his set teeth, as he bowed himself

[FROM LAST SATURDAY'S SECOND EDITION]
We desire to remind our readers that connected with the Gazette is a first class Job Printing office, from which is turned out printing of a very superior style. Letterheads, envelopes, bill-heads, cards, circulars, labels, tags, etc., printed in elegant style and at prices which will satisfy everybody.
And now, with hearts full of thankfulness, let us sing,
"For the Lord God omnipotent raineth."
Mr. M.L.Wicks was thrown from his buggy in Los Angeles on Thursday. From letters received here we learn that his injuries are not serious.
The long-delayed, much-looked-for, ever-to-be-welcomed rain commenced falling yesterday, and there is every prospect of a bountiful wetness.
"The rain, the rain, the beautiful rain, softly it falls on the hill and the plain, as gladsome a sight as ever was seen, covering the earth with a carpet of green." Thus sings the Downey Courier.
The election of Mr.Farley to the U.S.Senate would be a triumph for the railroad.

"Kill him!" hissed the great philanthropist between his set teeth, as he bowed himself over his clasped hands, and sought the nearest drug store in the attitude of a boy who has tarred long at the green apples," "Kill him! Pound the hair off him! Tear out his heart with a nail grab, the long-legged, iron-jawed, thick-headed son of iniquity! Pull his accursed legs out by the roots, and cut him into fish-bait before you burn him alive! Oh-h-h, decidedly dog gone a billy be-dogged son of a gun of a mule, anyhow!"
Russia leather is made in Connecticut; Bordeaux wine is manufactured in California; French lace is woven in New York; Italian marble is dug in Kentucky; Marseilles linen is produced in Massachusetts; English cassiine is made in New Hampshire; Italian art work comes from a shop in Boston; Spanish mackerel are caught on the New Jersey coast; and Havana cigars are rolled by the million in Chicago.
William Dooley, an amateur detective in search of two cattle thieves, found them at church at White Sulphur, Ky., whereupon pistol in hand, he informed preacher and congregation that they were all under arrest. While everybody looked astonished, he picked out his men, marched thin out of the building at the muzzle of his weapon, and turning on the step, shouted to the minister that he could go on with the benediction.

The election of Mr. Farley to the U.S. Senate would be a triumph for the railroad ring. That is a well-known fact, never disputed, and admitted even by Farley himself. It will therefore occasion no surprise that among his supporters are Senator Smith and Assemblymen Ellis and Holloway, the representatives from this county. "Didn't we told you so,"
Mr. W. Fraser Rae, an English traveller, who is himself master of one of the oldest Masonic lodges in the world, was considerably surprised at the public parades of Knights Templar in this country. He says the English Knights "would as soon think of holding an encampment in a balloon as of amusing themselves by perambulating the streets in the full dress of their order."
The police at Utica, N.Y., have discovered that an obstruction placed upon the Central railroad tracks near the city recently, and which came near wrecking the night express, was placed there by an insane man who thought that God demanded that the "railroads should be annihilated," and that he was commissioned to carry out the work.
It is estimated that the rebellion in the Island of Cuba has already cost the Spanish government $200,000,000—almost as much as Mr. Bachanan once proposed to give for it. At least $100,000,000 must be added to the bill of expenses for the ruin of sugar estates and other properties. How many more millions will be needed to put down the insurrection, and can it ever be suppressed?
It has hitherto been contended that to cover an animal with an impermeable varnish would produce a fatal result, and this assumption is supported by the story of a boy who died in consequence of being coated with gold leaf, to represent an angel in a religious ceremony. A German savant has laterly tested this assumption. Two healthy men allowed their limbs to be coated with impermeable plasters, while the trunk was varnished with several layers of flexible collodion. Nearly a week was allowed to elapse before these applications were removed, but there were no bad consequences; and the inference is that the gilded boy was poisoned by some ingredient in the material applied to the skin.
